Old style driving licence validity

I've read the recent threads on this subject and thought I felt comfortable, and then somebody at my wife's place of work comments that he is sure you need to have the new style two-piece licence. Nothing to back up the statement but it gets you thinking.

The U.S. London Embassy website never refers to the type of licence other than it must be a full one, not provisional.

Can I ask for confirmation from someone who has very recently been to Florida that the old-style one-piece licence is still valid and accepted by the hire companies.

As long as the old style licence remains a valid licence in this country, it will remain valid for car hire in the US.

Just to confirm what patdavies said - the old style licence is fine. It's what I took last year and was accepted without question.

Yes, you can use the old style licence, we did last year and I'm doing it again this year ! I must get a new style licence though as soon as I return..... it's on my TO DO list !!

Confirming what you have been already told-old style is fine-as for the new one you must have both parts to be able to rent a car -pain in the ......

That's funny, it's been on my to do list for over a year, really must get those passport photo's done...

As an incentive to get the new two-piece license remember that the photo card can be used as photo id, which is often requested in the US when making purchases with a credit card. This is especially so if the purchase is over $100.
