I remember reading about this show! Guess it wouldn't go with Disney's "no-fly" policy would it!

I'm thinking they were on the Pangani Trail not the Safari.
They are on the safari just very difficult to see. I think more trees now too. They are on the left when you first see a few elephants on the right. I've seen them on a few safari rides but best during the sunrise safari when they stop and point them out. I just saw them on a "regular" safari I took the first week of May first thing in the morning but not out in the open like in that photo.

I think there were a couple of factors involved. IIRC, there was an accident involving one of the ultralight airplanes that either seriously injured or killed the pilot. I think that was just the final straw, though, because the show was very expensive to produce and couldn't run if the winds were even slightly strong.

It was definitely an interesting show, and just another example of Disney being innovative, and how sometimes those innovations just don't work out.

And another interesting bit of trivia... There used to be an FAA recognized airport located behind EPCOT Center that was used for this show.

The new Art of Animation resort is now in that exact location.

Fascinating - it had never crossed my mind to wonder where they took off/landed from! I would have guessed the old airstrip over by MK, but it makes more sense to do this, since so much less room was needed for those ultralights. Thanks for the info!

I LOVE this thread!!
It has inspired me to dig through my old vacation photos! Now I just need to find time to scan them...

If anyone else has any photos of the Skyway or Leagues, Please post! I was never at MK when Leagues was there. I still can't place it in the park.

Thanks!!:goodvibes

It was kind of where Ariels Grotto used to be

If memory serves me, Ariels Grotto was right in front of the 20K lagoon.

Yes, I think you are right. I wasn't sure if the yhad used part of it or not. I know back in the late 90's you could still see the lagoon if you went to the right spot to look, (and it looked creepy) but i don't think you could when we were there in 2007.
It's obviously all gone now.

If you know where they built the Pooh playground, they built it right on top of the lagoon. Ariel's Grato was more off to the side of the lagoon. For quite awhile they had a sign up at leagues saying it was being "refurbished".

And.... The "Storybook Circus" side and the back of the new Little Mermaid show building are actually the only 2 walls still standing from the old 20K leagues show building. (The "loop" after you went under the waterfalls).

OOH, I love knowing things like that! Thanks for sharing!

I'm about half way through the 150 pages or so, and love this thread!!! will comment more later, but...

One question, has the color of the golf ball (spaceship earth) changed? I could be wrong, but it seems more white now versus silver/gray in older pics...

Dan

I don't think the color of Spaceship earth has ever changed. What you're seeing might be due to the age of the pics, if they're scanned or digital, etc. Also, they could be washing it more frequently then they used to!

I would guess, too, that it's the difference in the quality of the film that was used in the 80s vs. digital photography today. Taking into account the film quality, the degradation of the printed picture, and the scanning process, that probably has a noticeable effect on the photo's color.

Love, Love, LOVE this thread! I am only on page 77 at the moment, but diligently (and very enjoyably) working my way through :)

My In-Laws recently shared some pictures with my DH and I from their first trip back in 1971 shortly after MK opened that I thought I would share with you, so here goes!
