old desktop??

We got a new desktop for christmas. How do I get rid of our info on the old one before we recycle it?

Pop open the case. Take the hard drive out. Run a drill through it just off center. The disk will never spin right again. Unless they have hard core tech to pull it apart and read the disk it will take care of the issue. If you have questions on getting the drive out let me know. Computer guys when I cant be in Disney.

I was told by a computer geek that you need to burn the hard drive as that is the only true way to get rid of the information. Places like Goodwill will not take a computer now.

We have a local shredding company that will put your hard drive through their industrial shredder while you watch. It literally comes out in about half inch pieces. It was super easy to get the hd and the memory out of our old computer.

When my old computer died I took the hard drive out and put it into a case so I could use it as a portable storage device (after copying all files to the new computer). If your new computer has an extra drive bay you can install the old drive there. There's no need to destroy the old drive if it can be reused by you.

Not entirely true. Goodwill has a partnership with Dell to recycle computers. Find a participating Goodwill with this website:

For sure this idea. Heck, I still have a 2 gig hard drive laying around from my very first computer.
