OKW Poll, Water Slide or No Water Slide

Should Disney put a water slide at the OKW main pool?

  • Yes, I would like a water slide

  • No, leave the pool the was it is

Having stayed at OKW, I have to say that I think the pool area is nice the way it is. I don't think every resort needs to have a slide in the pool. I think that if the addition of a slide meant a bigger common fee, or whatever the yearly charge is called, then the owners there wouldn't go fo it.

Our family of 3 (me, DH, 3 year old DD) owns 230 points at OKW and 200 at BWV. I think a slide would be a huge improvement to the pool area. I know that my daughter will start to want one in a few short years. Personally, I would like to see an overhaul of the whole main pool to inlcude a slide and a zero depth pool.

Denine:
“I like it the way it is. The other resorts have slides, those that want to use them may pool hop”

Could you tell me why the other resorts that pay with their dues for slides and lifeguards should support your’ pool hopping?

Cligs:
“If we want waterslides, we go over to Blizzard Beach”

Not a bad thought, did I agree with cligs?

Dean:
“The official DVC poll was of a much broader base and number than DIS could ever be and it was pretty overwhelming, I believe 69% against”

not sure if that was 69% against, I believe it was more like 50 something against, and don’t care (around 19 %) seems to be added to the against a pool slide. We only own 150 points at Okw and never received the famous survey, maybe it was only sent out to the older, sorry “original” members.

Again, denine:
“Sorry, I love the dolphins. It makes the area unique. If anyone wants a slide, buy into another resort”

And maybe we should eliminate pool hopping for resorts with boring pools? Sorry, first time my kids saw the dolphins they said “hey mom, dad, dolphins,” and after seeing them up close,“oh, wow, dolphins, is that all they do?”

Ted’s mom:

“I think that if the addition of a slide meant a bigger common fee, or whatever the yearly charge is called, then the owners there wouldn't go fo it.”

When Pete started this site years ago, that was the original statement being made by the “original” Dvc members at okw on this site. It’s later changed, since it made them sound cheap. You couldn't believe how many people would say, "I'm not paying one cent more a point for a slide". It was too funny. Now it's "Our pool is fine the way it is, we can always pool hop".

Boards have been a little boring lately, thought I would spice it up a little bit.
I really don't care if Okw gets a slide anymore, but the attitude of "our pool is nice, I'm not paying for the extra dues, and besides we can always use your pool, is weak. If you love your pool, use it. If you want another pool, pay for an upgrade at your resort or stay at a resort that has the pool you want to enjoy. I've always thought that Okw was a top resort, and the only thing it lacked was a pool that was more enjoyable to kids. Why not make the pool at least as nice as the moderate resort pools? If you don't want to change your pool, , then stay at your resort, and you shouldn't have a complaint when they cancel pool hopping.

Should we end pool-hopping?
I know some like to experience other resorts without paying the money or points for those resorts. It would be nice to know everyone at your pool, was a pt or cash paying guest. I remember way back when Disney resort guests could pool hop. They changed that, what's to say they won't do it again. I know Disney changed their hopping at Y and B for DVC when enough complained, how many more complaints will it take to eliminate it altogether?

Add a slide? I think it would be great. Don't add a slide and use my other resorts pools? I don't think it's right anymore.

I always thought that swimming pools were a place for fun for all members of the family, not just those that wish to lounge by the pool and read, sleep, and drink. That waterfalls were to be played in by little children. I think that if there are 4 pools at a resort that supposedly is for all types of people, including those with young kids, that a slide and a waterfall that the kids could actually play in, instead asking what purpose does that thing at OKW have, Mom and Dad, isn't really expecting too much. But then that would almost make too much sense.

With the extra units that were added I do think OKW needs extra pool facilities, I would leave the "main pool " as it is, but extend either one of the small pools around the development or the second pool area, and add a slide to that improved pool area.

We own at OKW and I really don't care if there is a slide or not. We enjoy the pool the way it is. But I wouldn't be against them updating the pool area. If that meant including a slide I wouldn't be against it or for it. A nice waterfall and some extra landscaping around the pool might be a nice addition. If they do decide to add a slide I hope that it is very tasteful and doesn't detract from the laidback atmosphere of OKW. I would be very upset if I saw a Keister Coaster added to the pool area. (Sorry BWV owners.) I have enjoyed staying at BWV a couple of times, but that type of slide would not be in character to OKW.

I wonder as the OKW owners age, just like the rest of us and I am 48. I wonder if they will change thier minds if they go to a pool with a slide with grandkids.

I really don't think it's the age of OKW owners that has anything to do with the decision. Awhile back we polled the DVC owners who also post here and came up with pretty similar age breakouts. The majority are 30-50 for all WDW DVC's (pre-BCV). OKW has a slightly higher majority in the 41-50 age group, WLV has slightly more in the 30-40 group. BWV is split just about even between 30-40 and 41-50 age groups.

Since OKW has been open for 10 years, there is a whole generation of poor deprived children who suffered through WDW vacations without slides. There are also grandchildren, now grown, who suffered the same fate. (Big Wink). Soon great-grandchildren will be arriving to suffer again. ;)

I'm sure DVC will consider member opinions when making decisions on updating the pool areas. The best thing to do is let DVC know how you feel on the issue if you feel strongly enough on either side.

They should put a Big Slide at OKW because the dues are to cheep and they need a good reason to raise them. Then you would have more locals sneeking into the resort using the facilities.

Will they let me pool hop there when I am staying at HH?

JUST KIDDING. Trying to lighten the discussion.

I do think the pool could use a facelift, maybe not a complete reconstruction.

Be sure the slide is at least 25% bigger then BWV slide so it matches the rooms, in keeping with the huge OKW theme.

Nice Mr. J. Cricket,

Could you please let the appropriate Disney people see that pic. That is great.

Taller?????? It would take you 45 minutes to walk up this one :)

Now that's a slide! ;)

You could see it from Epcot!

LMAO at that second picture!

Thanks for the laugh, JC, on such a dreary day. :)

I'd like to propose some outside-of-the-box thinking to the OKW pool issue. Don't add a slide, add something really unique that could be a huge draw to the resort.

How about adding a waterfall that you swim through to a grotto with an in-pool bar/snack bar with stools in the water. Since this is Disney, make this area something that appeals to both adults and kids. I don't think there is anything else like it on-site, and it could be really cool, not to mention generate revenue. And it sure sounds like it would fit in with the idea of "Key West" to me.

The problem is not with what to add or change...the majority of OKW owners do not want anything changed...they like it the way it is-hard as that is for those of us who find the pool uninspired, unthemed as no other pool on site-including the AllStars and unsatisfying...that is the fact. You can't make them not like the pool just as they cannot convince you or me to like it. They like it and will oppose any change that you might propose. Sorry, but since Disney only owns 4% -I am not even sure if they could unilaterally decide to try to change the pool as they have done at the resorts they completely own and control...while I doubt money factors significantly in the change it/don't change it debate..I do doubt that the owner/members of OKW would violently oppose a change if Disney footed the bill completely--we may never know.

Great idea stlphil! A pool bar, I'm with you!

Love the pictures JC! They made me laugh my head off! That second slide would really attract the pool crashers. I think that I will stick with the waterfall / grotto / pool bar idea.

I would rather see a more developed kids play/water squirting area..... Less cost, no need for lifegaurd, and tonz of more fun than one silly little slide....

The small area at the Poly.... where the water squirts up.... something like that.......

...........shrug...........

I suppose if it came down to it, I dont really care what they do..... we love OKW.
