I read this about online dating:
Men who are reluctant to send you a photo or meet you in person in a public place are usually hiding something (maybe a wife, or a hundred pounds!)
And....
Once you learn someone's real name, you might try "Googling" him, or search for any criminal records on PublicData.com. Try to learn anything about him that does or doesn't verify what he has told you. One woman started to correspond with a "successful doctor" she met online, but when she Googled him, she discovered via an old newspaper article that he had been invoved in a malpractice suit and had lost his license. He no longer practiced medicine, but told her in detail about the patients he supposedly saw everyday!
And...
Meet the man as quickly as possible once you determine a good connection via email and phone contact. Suggest a meeting within 2 weeks if he hasn't asked you first. If he stalls the face-to-face meeting, move on.
