As one of the lurkers being encouraged to join in the fray I will venture to begin a thread.

Next week I am taking a day all to my single mommy self. I'm going to spend a stupid amount of money and have my hair done and then get a massage, manicure and pedicure. My question is how much do most people tip for the massages and the manicure and pedicure. I've never had a massage (mostly because I'm afraid I will enjoy it and want it more than the once every 30 years) or a pedicure. I've had my fake nails filled before, however now I have only my own nails.

So if anyone out in disland can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. The places I'm going is where the only person I will allow to touch my hair and it is a rather chic (read: snooty) salon. I checked their website to see if there was any mention of what the custom is but no one had an answer for me.

Thanks for all the help you all may be able to give me.

Well, being a husband of someone that frequently spends a stupid amount of money on the same luxuries that you're describing, I can honestly say that you should remember that TIPPING IS OPTIONAL. :teeth:

Tara, good for you for taking the time to do this for yourself. Sounds like a wonderful day!! And good for you for just jumping in and posting :)

As for the tipping thing, I don't know what to tell you. I go and get my hair done at a similar sounding palce as you do and I usually tip about 15-20% depending on how much I liked it at the end. I've only had one massage before, I didn't pay for it so I have no clue how much the tip was for, so sorry I can't help you with that. I hope you enjoy the massage (they ARE wonderful!)

I'm glad that you posted a thread!!!! I LOVE it when a lurker comes out of hiding:D I agree with helenabear.....15-20% is customary around here for a hair cut & style & a manicure/pedicure.

Thanks for the replies so quickly.

I have never understood the whole tipping philosophy. I understand it at restaurants and can do it pretty easily. But I've always been concerned that for other things I would look like I was cheap or that I would give way too much and look like a fool. This is one those issues that plagues me when I go to WDW. How much for the bus driver from MCO, how much for the Bell hops at the resort, how much for the mousekeeping. Of course it is optional but if the service is good I want to tip but don't want to offend the reciever.

Kissimmee JP I think it is nice that you understand your wife's need for these things!!!!! lol!!!

Thanks for the help.

Tara-As far as the Bellhops at the resorts I always thought $1.00 per bag was correct for the guy bringing them up to your room. If anyone else knows different please let me know. Tipping is VERY confusing to me too.

Ok, hold it right there Tara. Where, exactly, did I say I understood?? :teeth:

What I do understand is my wife needing some release for all the stress I cause. If you couldn't tell, I'm a bit of a wise guy. :)

Hi Tara, glad to see you are de-lurking!!! And congrats to you for treating yourself!!

As far as tipping goes I usually tip 15-20% depending on the service. Will three different people be doing each thing? If so and you are happy with the service I would tip as above. If one person is doing it all and you are a satisfied customer I would tip 20-25%.

As for the bell hop, we tend to go with the $1 per bag rule of thumb. I have never tipped a bus driver only someone we hired for a private (just my family) ride to the airport and then we would tip 15%. As far as mousekeeping we tip $1 per person per day.

Hope this helps! Enjoy your day of pampering.

Yeah for Tara! Sounds like a nice day planned...I have to admit...I tip only if the service is good or else they get a very small tip 10% or if it was really, really bad NOt at all.....

I am so glad that you started a thread :) That wasn;t too bad, now was it? :)

I tip around 15%-20% for the services you mentioned. If one person does it all, and you are floating in heaven, then 20%-25%.

I love to have a massage and a pedicure. It is great that you are doing this for yourself.

Kissimmee JP- so glad that you are such an intelligent mane to realize that men cause women stress :) Of course, women never cause men stress :)

Ooh, sounds like a wonderful treat!

I have always tipped 15-20% for services like that, mostly for my hair. I have yet to encounter a horrible service, so I haven't had to adjust that. Thank goodness! :Pinkbounc

The intelligent part I understand. The mane part I don't. :)

I never said I don't spend absurd amounts of cash to relax myself from all the stress she causes me, however. :smooth:

Jamsmom "I am so glad that you started a thread That wasn;t too bad, now was it? "

No it really was not that bad. I didn't kill my computer, I didn't stutter and say anything significantly insane. And I was wearing my pants at the time. So I guess it is possible to DIS with the drawers!!

Kissimmee JP, maybe Jamsmom was comparing you to a lion!! :)

Thanks for all the replies. 15% -20% is what I was thinking for good service. I am so excited to be doing this. I was feeling very guilty at first but then as Oprah says we have to take care of ourselves before we can effectively take care of others!!

I've never had a pedicure so I'm not sure if I will like it. I don't wear sandals so no one will every see it, but I am going to pretend that I'm in WDW and I don't have a care in the world!

Thank you for the warm welcomes to DISing!!

tara

Where did that "e" come from? I really did mean "man" and not "mane"

Sorry Tara but some replies on this thread have me giggling. :)

I agree with those that say 15-20%. :)

Jamsmom - I like how you keep these DIS men in line. :teeth:

LOL!!! Welcome Tara to the dis :)

Welcome, Tara see, the water wasn't that cold!

KissimmeeJP - just be glad Jansmom got the front part of the horse!

One of the things about being a "lurker" is the fact that you can read the conversations of others and be in on their jokes.

The water is very warm here and I'm enjoying. Just have to be careful not to jump in when I'm supposed to be doing real work!!!

Keep on having fun!!! I'll be back later to check on you all!!

Oh, duh!! I forgot to say:

Welcome Tara!! :) :)
