Yesterday at IOA we were stopped for a survey while exiting. One of the questions was whether we had enjoyed ourselves more there than at Disney. As a longtime Member of the Mouse Cult, I am ashamed to admit that I quite truthfully and unabashedly answered "Yes!" (Note that I'm speaking as a local, so please take my opinion as such.)

Hubby and I discussed it on the way home. We decided that we enjoy so many more rides/shows at USF/IOA. At Disney, the only things we really LOVE are the safari ride and Legend of the Lion King at AK (Everest is okay but downright boring when you compare it to Mummy, and things like Dinosaur, the mad mouse coaster, and Bugs Life are take-it-or-leave-it); Test Track, Soarin', and Turtle Talk at Epcot, (used to love Figment, but the travesty they changed it to makes me projectile vomit...I do enjoy Spaceship Earth and Ellen's Energy Adventure); Tower of Terror and the Little Mermaid Show at MGM; and nothing in particular at MK...we enjoy things like Pirates and Thunder Mountain, but none of them are "wows." With our favorites spread over four parks, it's a real pain in the butt...otherwise, we're stuck at one park with only one or two things we'd bother to do repetitively.

At Universal, I could ride Mummy and MIB all day, and Terminator is my favorite 3-D show ever. We usually toss in Twister and rotate between Beetlejuice, the animal show, and Fear Factor. Once we've had enough there, it's just a short walk to Hulk (another all-day rider for me), Spidey, and Dueling Dragons. I could spend a happy day just rotating between those three. Disney has absolutely no REAL roller coaster in my view, so I need IOA for my fix.

Since we live so close to the parks, I have an aversion to long lines. Thus, we've avoided Disney at the peak times because all the Fast Passes are gone within the first couple of hours. Better just to wait till the dead times. We know how to work the Fast Past system pretty good at non-peak, but it's still kind of a pain to have to plan your day that carefully vs. being spontaneous.

With the introduction of the premier passes, our Disney attendance has plummeted because we're always at USF/IOA. We've actually started visiting at busy times because we can be spontaneous and not spend our entire day in lines. If I were still a tourist, I'd be onsite at USF/IOA vs. Disney in a heartbeat. I hate to admit it, but the Mouse has lost us. It's been months since I've been to WDW and I have no real desire to go.

Hubby did point out one thing he prefers at Disney: Illuminations and the various fireworks shows. But since we live so close, he just drives over at closing time for those. For actual theme park ride time, we just don't bother anymore.

People's tastes change and there is nothing wrong with preferring UO/IoA over WDW. Both resorts offer high quality entertainment and you are lucky to live in the theme park capital of the world. Enjoy your time at UO/IoA and don't feel even a twinge of guilt!

We were there Saturday and it is a great destination-stayed at HRH which was great as usual as well and FOTL cant be beat. But it still seemed one day was more than enough for us. Hulk/Spidey/DD/Mummy/MIB all twice and ET/TEMR once. Skipped the water rides and went back to HRH pool for a few hours since it was kind of chilly out. We will hit those on our one day visit to IOA/US in June and the rest of the week at WDW. That works perfect for us-we still get back for Fantasmic that night.:thumbsup2

Oh ya, we could ride MIB and Mummy all day. In fact, we have!!! Until you start figuring out the targets on MIB, it is a once or twice ride. Once you've got a strategy, it is really, really addicting.

And I rode for 4 more hours this morning, watching MIB 999,999 on Sunday made me want to improve and I did, maxing out for hours this weekend, thanks MIB9s

inkognito.......you forgot to say you love my favorite show.

how about some mention here for horror make up show....

did you get the funny money for doing the survey?
i love doing surveys at UO and then get paid for doing them!

We haven't seen the makeup show for quite a while...we were just saying today that we need to see it next time we're at USF.

Nope, no funny money...we've been asked to do a survey the last two out of three times we were there, but no pay. Darn!

i always see that show numerous times when i am at the park.
i think it is a hoot.

you originally from chicago?
i'm up that way, it snowed today again here.

Admitting that you have a problem is the first step.;)

my name is amity 3 and I tried to set a personal record for exhaust port hits on friday, I failed.

it was my daughter, me, and two first-timers in the car. we got the suit, but it still seemed like a hollow experience.

Yep, I'm a born-and-bred Chicago south sider (grew up in Roseland and then moved progressively south in the 'burbs till I fled to Florida). I'm sitting here snickering as I remember some past viewings of the make-up show. Ah, memories!

That brought back another OLD USF memory...I got suckered into being in the Xena show and still have flashbacks to that huge bustier. Hubby kidded me about it unmercifully till I set him up one day. I had noticed where they tended to pick "Mother" in Hitchcock, and hubby always wears the requisite tennis shoes. As we were waiting, I maneuvered him into the right spot. Sure enough...BINGO! He didn't have a camera when I did Xena, but I darn sure made certain to have one for that. I miss those two attractions (and Ghostbusters)...good times! Sigh!

I am also from Chicago(north side then just across the nothern suburbs)have been in Tampa for 7 years.Going thru MIB withdrawl this morning hope to get back soon

Barb:

You are not alone. I have been a faithful mouseketeer nearly all my life (I grew up in Florida). But when Islands of Adventure opened up, our family was immediately hooked. Add the onsite FOTL perk and forget it, we spend more time at US/IOA than Disney now. Shameful, I know.

Don't get me wrong, we still have our favorites at Disney, but the new attractions they have opened have not come close to matching what Universal has opened. I was extremely dissapointed with Everest. Yeah, its cool that it goes backwards, but there was no WOW factor for me, even the first time I rode it. I still WOW on Mummy :) Spiderman is still about the coolest attraction I have ever been on, I never grow tired of it. MIB is far superior to Buzz Lightyear in so many ways - I love going through the queue (Yes I am a "dufus", LOL).

I will be heading to IOA/Univeral in the next coming weeks. I can't wait.. and nope, I am not going to visit mouse this trip... sshhhhhhhhh ;)

Dagny, you sound just like me! When I compare Everest to Mummy, I just roll my eyes and shake my head and try to remember a time when Disney was an innovator. Hubby and I still "wow" on Mummy too. It's one of those things I can ride repetitively without boredom...it works both on the level of a roller coaster (LOVE the airtime) and a dark ride with awesome effects.

I think I'd be yawning on Buzz now that I am a MiB affectionado, and Spidey...well, as you said, it really is one of the coolest rides and there is nothing else like it.

I hate to say it, but the only really innovative thing I've seen at Disney in years is Turtle Talk. It's the only attraction of theirs that I'd put up against USF/IOA. I love Soarin', but when you get down to brass tacks, it's really just a very cool Imax/motion simulator with a great soundtrack.

Hubby is upstairs pouting because we're having dinner in Dr. Phillips tonight and he was hoping for a quick USF fix afterwards, but it looks like it's going to rain all day. Those premier passes are as addictive as crack cocaine!!!

i lived on the north side of chgo for years, on the K streets off of Lawrence av
moved to the northern burbs to get out of Cook county and the high taxes.

I worked outside almost every day for many years it is quite a change,I don't think I'd go back. Also you are correct the prices of housing were mounting to high, things are starting to get higher here also.I don't miss the cold and snow
