We have been going for many years and we told (I believe by the disboards) that you can physically ring the liberty bell in Liberty Square. So..last trip we did the ringing (like we had done before) and was approached and condemned by a CM (in a suit...a manager?). They made as feel as if we were destroying property or doing something totally horridious! Not only did this stop the tradition but gives us unsettled thoughts when we go by this place. So I am just trying to clear this up...can you ring the liberty bell? There is no sign on it or near it. Thanks

I don't know the official word on this, but my DH has to ring it every time we go there. I tell him to leave it alone, he ignores me and I keep on walking. No one has ever told him not to ring it. I'll ask our daughter-she was a CM there this past spring.

Having worked in Liberty Square for 3 years (screen name is for the Riverboat not the actual bell). I am going to tell you that it was uncalled for for them to say anything to you. As you stated there is nothing saying you can't ring the bell (or not to). The only time I can recall ever saying anything to anyone about it was on a Night Of Joy when there was like 80 teenagers and they all wanted to ring it... after about the 10th GONG it got annoying and we went over there and said enough already. People ring it all the time and continue on their way, no harm no foul. Also if you had been to MK a few years ago when the Fife and Drum used to play regularly in Liberty Square they used to come out and ring the bell to get everyone's attention (kind of an invitation for future bell ringing).

Seems to me at WDW if there is something they don't want you to do, they make it inaccessible or they disable it. In a place designed with children in mind, it would seem odd that they would make the bell "ringable" then tell you you're not supposed to:confused:

I had never thought to ring it and never witnessed anyone doing so, but I love the idea of it now that you mention it to me! Might just have to give it a try on the next trip!

You are not allowed to ring the bell. Daughter worked in MK on the College program. When somebody does lots of CM's start running towards the bell.

Okay, maybe I won't ring the bell! lol...don't want to do anything to get me on Mickey's bad side! (Does Mickey have a bad side?)

I don't think mickey has a bad side, lol. He has to put up with kids all day, he can't afford to have a bad side.

Whew! Glad to hear it...my daughter threw a massive fit one afternoon in the park. I was sure we would be on Mickey's bad side that day for sure...turned out she had an ear infection and who behaves well when they don't feel well?

It is behind a fence. I would imagine if they wanted you to ring the bell, you would have easy access to it.

sooo... we've got a few yesses and a few nos... one of each from cm's directly or indirectly... so, what is the answer? i've never tried to ring it before but of course, now i am tempted ! LOL!

gigi1313, I'm right there with you! I am thinking that I will ask a CM right there in Liberty Square on my next trip and see what they say. I can't remember exactly what the area looks like, so if it's behind a fence, maybe they are trying to tell us something. Does anyone have a picture of it? lol

Hmm -- I don't remember it being behind a fence???? I don't believe that is correct.

My middle child rings it every time he goes past it. It's become a family joke for the rest of us to pretend we don't know him.

I think it's more like a railing than a fence...

It is just a railing (and a low one at that) as I stated I have worked at MK for 9 years (3 years of that was in Liberty Square) and there is no rule about ringing the bell. Not sure where safetymom's daughter worked or who told her that it was forbidden, but it really is not an issue. There are only a handful of people that actually do ring the bell (probably about 1 or 2 a day). Like I said before as long as it is not out of hand it is not an issue. Most people ring it and run in fear of getting yelled at. The only time I can see anyone saying anything about it is around parade time when there are lots of CM's around. I can honestly tell you the closest CM's to the bell any other time are the Hall of Presidents greeter and the Riverboat greeter (and perhaps some Christmas Store CM's) all of which have better things to do than run over and yell at you for ringing the bell.

*picks up sign and joins picket line surrounding the ole bell*

"Let Freedom Ring! Let Freedom Ring!"

:p IVY :p

P.S. I'm pixiechick77's sis who was the one who did the ringing and had the meanie manager run after me and rebuke my "behavior"...according to him, the "railing" around the bell was to be a signal that the "Bell" was NOT to be touched! Yikes!! I'm still in therapy!! :earseek:

Here's a link to a pic of the Liberty Bell at WDW. I think if they truly wanted to limit access to it, they would put the railing a little farther away, say out of arm's reach????

I suggest ya'll just listen to LibertyBell, who has posted earlier in this thread.

I've found that what comes from the horse's mouth is more reliable than from "other" directions.

It seems to me they would just remove the ringer part on the inside of the bell if they didn't want it rung...assuming that's how people ring it.

I've never tried it. I just might have to try it this December now.;)
