just when i think i can't get anymore confused i was searching for lens prices...and found this

would both work on my rebeL& is one better than the other?? and of course say i decide on buying a used one, how do i know which is which

That is where paying even $20-50 more is worth it. Say you bought it at B&H. You call and say " I realy did not want an EF-S lens, I think I ordered the wrong one." They will hook you up, I'm sure. and give you realtime support to get the one you want.

I think the two listings are the same lens. They are just catagorized in seperate groups because the retailors organize their sites into seperate film and digital areas.

They are the same lens. Canon only makes one 28-135 IS lens and it is an EF lens not an EF-S.

Both listing are for the same part number 2562A002, just different descriptions. Just remember that some retailers offer 2 versions of the lens. A lower priced 'Imported' version that needs to go through them for warranty work and a 'USA' version that goes straight to Canon US for service with a 1 year USA warranty.

DELL has two listings on the same 28-135 IS lens. One for $459 and one for $413.10. Apparently they currently have 10% (45.90) off this lens right now but you have to pick the proper url to get it.

The $413 is a great price on this lens. I have used DELL alot with camera items. As long as it is in stock. When it is not in stock it they can really drag thier feet getting your order completed. My 50mm f/1.8 was listed as a 10 day delivery time but it took 4 weeks to finally ship it. But the price as $62 so I hung in there.

Caveat Emptor! They are the SAME lens. Beware! Canon made only ONE EF28-135IS USM lens. This dealer looks fishy . . . and I am NOT talkign NEMO fishy too!
