Paul McCartney was "killed" in 1966 in a car accident and was "replaced" by William Campbell, a look a like.
"Clues" start with Revolver and go onward. For example on Sgt. Pepper, Paul's back is to the camera on the back cover; on his suit he wears a patch that says OPD (officially pronounced dead, as opposed to Ontario Police Dept. which is where the patch came form). A Day In the Life tells Car Crash (He blew his mind out in a car) Magical Mystery Tour -- Paul is wearing a black carnation at the end of the film. All the others have red. "I Am The Walrus" also as a musical number and song has clues. During the movie there are policeman lined up during the song as there were after the "crash". Also the "Walrus" is a sign of death in some cultures (but nobody can say what culture that might be). By the "White" album John comes right out and says in "Glass Onion" -- "Here's another clue for you all...the Walrus was Paul." By that time they were "in" on the joke. Also if you play Revolution #9 backwards you hear sounds from the crash as well as "Paul is dead, miss him, miss him." (don't even bother to listen to it forwards). In the Ringo tune, "Don't Pass Me By" he sings "You were in a car crash, and you lost your hair" (a reference to the fact that Paul was supposedly decapitated). We round this all out with Abbey Road where Paul, dressed in his funeral grab and shoeless crosses the street with John in white (symbolizing the ambulance attendant), George in jeans (symbolizing the grave digger) and Ringo in a suit (the undertaker). The white volkswagon BEETLE in the background tells the tale with the license plate (28 IF) -- of course Paul was only 27 at the time, but...and the plate actually read LMW28IF...
The fact that Paul was hiding out with his then girlfriend, Linda in a remote location in Scotland (not far from Campbelltown -- which gave rise to the William Campbell tale) didn't help.
Ultimately, William Campbell and the rest of the Beatles didn't get along, so they broke up (the true reason.
