Hey, don't remember seeing a thread about this this year...I remember following last years. LOL

What's everyone paying for oil this winter? I'm negotiating right now. Our current company wants $2.87/gal. Yeah right! Just got capped at $2.699 w/ a new company. They're coming to look at our oil burner for the service contract in the morning...hope it goes well. LOL Burner is from 1972. LOL

We debated just paying COD w/out a contract this year, but I really want a service contract...

Just curious...prices at other companies around here (Long Island, NY) seem to be around there right now....

Anyone want to share?

In Southern New Hampshire we just paid $2.49/gallon. We do not have a service contract (I don't think, have to check with DH.) Should I look into that? this is our first house, I am not sure what to do.

We're going into our 3rd year in our first house. I think if our burner was new (not older than ME!!) I'd go that route & just call around for the cheapest price that day.

I just know that as soon as I do that the burner will die at 3am in a snowstorm & no one will be able to come fix it for a week & will charge me $100000000 to come since I don't have a contract. LOL That is our luck with things. LOL If I didn't have a 1yr old & a 4yr old, this might not matter quite as much to me. LOL

I know a lot of people go w/ a contract & others don't. :) It's a matter of preference, I guess.

A service contract is a good thing. DH's company gets $85 just for him to walk thru the door. If it's a weekend or night call they get $150 - just for him to walk thru the door. If he has to do more than 1 hrs work it's $85/hr for his time plus parts.

A service contract generally includes 1 cleaning.

What a service contract generally does not cover is night/weekend service for non-emergency calls (i.e., no hot water in the middle of the night is not considered an emergency/no heat on Memorial day weekend is not considered an emergency. )

We just got a bill for $2.69/gallon, but we're supposed to pay cost. DH has to investigate.

Thanks! I will look into a service contract. Our furnace is 37 years old and we are just praying for it to make it through the winter so we can afford to replace it sometime after this Christmas!

LOL Ours is 37 yrs old as well. :) We were told when we moved in 3 yrs ago it wouldn't last the winter. After it breaking down that winter & paying $175 for a $15 part (inc labor) we got the service contract & had it fixed several times...got the yearly tune-up included & it's still going (knock on wood!!). LOL Hoping to get one or two more years...

Congrats on your pregnancy, btw!!! :) So exciting!

$2.24 COD up here in Maine...didn't lock in this year so keeping our fingers crossed and our house chilly

We just paid 2.37 here in Colchester, CT. Changed our oil company this year so we will just hope that oil prices don't go crazy this year!

We also have an older furnace, and thought about putting inserts into our 2 fireplaces this year, but they want 3-4K each to do that. That is alot of wood. But then again, it would be alot more efficient and the older I get, the colder I seem to get. ;)

Don't worry to much about the age. As is true with many appliances, believe it or not, some of the older ones are actually the better ones. Newer ones are more efficient, older are more durable. Ours is original to the house (built in 1948) and still going strong. Dcousin moved into a house with the original boiler still in place - the house was built in 1890 :scared1:. It had been converted from coal to oil. She and her hubby were going to replace based on age alone and DH told them "why? It's still going strong, don't mess with a good thing." 10 years later it was still running and they hadn't had a single problem.

Just curious why is oil used up north so much for heating? Is there no natural gas? Its cheaper and sure burns clean.

There is natural gas just not everywhere. Not available in my town or any of the 5 towns surrounding but it is available 3 towns over. In that town a lot of people have gas.
