My son broke his arm and the will be casting it in a few days. :earseek: :earseek: Our trip is planned for the 10th of September. Has anyone else had a kid with a cast at disney? Will the restrict him from going on any rides? We are sooooooo bummed, but he is doing well. ::MickeyMo

There are definitely rides I'd recommend skipping, but so many others where he should be fine! If it were my ds, I'd take him on all of the tame rides such as TTA, Buzz, Pirates, Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion, etc. and just skip the ones that toss you about (the Mountains, RNRC, etc.).

I'm sure he'll have a wonderful time despite his injury -- hope he's not too miserable and itchy in that cast in the Florida humidity!!!

First off  They won't restrict him from any rides & bring some Sharpie markers and have the characters sign his cast! We've seen people do this and it's a fun and really great idea to make the best out of a bum situation.

Hope he feels better soon!

Hey I would check into seeing if you could get a gortex cast it is waterproof and it may cost alittle extra. My daughter has broke her arm twice and I wish I had went with the gortex the last time I would of had to pay $30. Because it would of been nice when we went to the beach. Would be especially great for the water rides

Sorry to hear about your son. I would speak w/ the doctor before he casts and find out about the waterproof cast. Then discuss what rides he would want your son to avoid. He should be able to give you an idea of what he wants your son to limit.

Thanks so much for the support. Ds is almost 12 and he is going to want to do anything and everything. If the Doctor allows, and Disney doesn't restrict I will just let him do whatever. We are going to get a water-proff cast, because we planned on both water parks. Hey, Thanks to for the tip of markers for characters to sighn, Ds thought that would be the bomb!!!!! Cheered him up a bit. :cool1: :bounce: :lovestruc :rotfl:

My son (4) broke his forearm (around the wrist) on Wednesday. We got it cast yesterday. We are going to Disney Oct.3rd and asked the ortho about it. Luckily, his will come off 5 days before we leave :cheer2: ...I am SO happy

I am sorry this happened to you as well, but know another Diser is in the same boat. We paid extra for the Gortex, and would highly recommend it (it was $45.00 more..insurance does not cover it). Gortex is waterproof and more comfortable than the cotton cast the Ortho said. He can wear it in the tub, pool, anywhere.

You might want to ask your doctor about alternatives. Our ortho told us that even if we were leaving sooner there were other options we could consider. Some examples she gave were, air casts, rubber splints and a couple of others that are removable or allow better movement. Depending on the break itself maybe one of these could be an option, I would definitely ask.

In any event, you all will have a blast, and I wish you the best!! :wave2:

I would also check with WDW about the rides. I know there are rides that I have seen people on with casts but there may be a few (for your son's safety and the safety of other riders) that he may not be allowed on.

We went to Dollywood (Pigeon Forge, TN) several years ago and I had a cast on my leg (from below the knee to the toe) and there were two rides that they would not allow me on. I was pretty upset because my theory was it was my leg and if I hurt it worse then I was the one that would have to suffer longer in the cast. However, after talking with one of the workers there I found that it wasn't me that they were worried about, it was other riders. Both rides got a little turbulent and if we were bumped around it was very possible that the cast would hit someone else. Made sense to me after they explained it.

So, I would suggest you check in advance just so that you know.

As long as WDW doesn't restrict your son, I'd let him ride everything. My DD has broken her arm twice. Both times, she was doing everything she wanted within a couple of days. She had a waterproof cast this past May/June and it was FABULOUS!! No problems with showers or swimming. Because of the gortex, she was never slowed down. She had a cast up to her shoulder, bent at 90 degrees, bright lime green for about 2 weeks before they were able to switch to a cast to her elbow. With the full cast, she danced 4 dances in her recital, only changing 1 cartwheel. If the recital had been 2 weeks later, she'd have done the cartwheel in the shorter cast!! The point is your son will be fine and will have a blast. Getting the characters to sign it is a great idea!!

Oh no, so sorry to hear your son broke his arm! Esp. right before your trip! I know he must be really bummed! Poor guy! I hope that he still is able to have a great trip!

I broke my elbow & am going in October. I sent disney an email& they won't stop anyone from going on the rides with a cast on. They just suggest that use caution as to what you do. I am sure he will get some extra attention from the characters. Enjoy your trip!

My daughter (then 6, turned 7 on our trip) fell off her horse and broke her elbow on May 28th. We were leaving for our trip on June 16th.

She required a 3 hour surgery to position the elbow correctly, as well as 3 pins placed. It didn't stop her from 1 thing!!!!! The only thing she missed was RnR...which is her favorite, but more because the line was to long!!!

As the OP suggested, have the characters sign his cast!!! She got TONS of extra attention for this, which really pleased her!!!!

I hope he feels better soon!!

Oh, edited to add...if you don't go with the goretex, if you plan on wrapping it with a bag, bring some Wal-mart ones or something similar from home. The new Disney bags bleed terribly when wet!

I am sorry, poor kid! I hope he isn't in too much pain and that you all have a wonderful time on your trip.

Poor thing. I know he is upset. Hopefully he will not have too much pain and once the MD gets it set it won't bother him too much. Also ask the MD about being out in the HOT weather (swelling sometimes can happen) in this weather. Hope you and him have a wonderful time. Pixie Dust being sent to you two. :flower: :wizard:

This is why I love the DISBOARDS, ask and you shall receive.... All of your replies have helped us feel better. Thanks again Disney here we come!

 :cheer2:  :cheer2:  :cheer2:  :cheer2:

I am sending some pixie dust to you all :wizard: :wizard: have fun.
