Waaaaa **sniff sniff** yes, the U word!!!

(U word to me = DD has grown up and wants to do other than WDW in Orlando.)

Let me explain. My DD (14) have been to WDW 2x a year for 5 years now. Because DH has no interets in visiting WDW, we have been able to afford to go alot more trips (1 person less=more trip money). Our mother/daughter trips have been sooo FUN :cool1:  :yay: such great memories were built during these trips. I prayed that she didn't get sick of it anytime soon. We just did 10 days in May, she is now 14, almost 15 and I think the time has come... the time when she needs more than WDW :) I have always saved UNIVERSAL as an "in case" she gets tired of WDW. I believe the time is here ::yes:: :( She is saying she would go to Universal, but not WDW next time... or she would go somewhere else altogether.

I have been to Universal when I was 20, but I don't remember much and havent been since. I KNOW she will LOVE it there, the thrill rides and all... it is just sad the time has come when I have to use any of our Orlando time anywhere but WDW. It is a change that I equate to her growing up, ya know. I am the one who is like :scared1:  when I hear people say WDW and Universal in the same trip. I just get like, :worried: that they need to be at WDW to see more. I mean if a family is going for 7 days, and they say they are doing Sea World and Universal and WDW, I am like :scared1: NOOOOO, you need that time and more to see what you need to at WDW. Save Universal for another time!! You all know how much time you need to see the best of WDW. I mean we have done 7-10 day trips 7 times and still have seen new things each time, and still haven't seen it all, ya know.

I guess once I get past the fact that she is growing up and all, I am sure I will be excited for the change in the trips. I tell ya though, she will be all over the thrill rides, so Universal will be right up her ally. Oh gawd she will be loving dragging me on those rides! :lmao:

I have been saving Universal in my back pocket. I think it is time I pull the card.

Please tell me, you who have been through this, you who love Universal, tell me I will be OK with this change.

***I haven't listened to any of the Universal podcast shows yet, so I am sure I will have a treat to hear them. Plus, planning something new, means more investigating for me, which I LOVE!*** :thumbsup2

Pete I know you say you love it at Universal... I will too... right???

We loved our week at US. It's very different than WDW. You don't need all the planning, you can just relax and enjoy. The 3 US resorts are beautiful, and you are allowed to pool hop! Your FOTL access works for many resturants as well as the rides. FOTL makes you feel so spoiled.:cloud9: Plus, US is small compared to WDW. You won't waste a lot of time getting from place to place. We also spend a wonderful day at Sea World.

Don't worry, it's all good!

Every Disney holiday we have taken a few days out to do Universal and SeaWorld. (we go for 14 days, so it makes it easier to take time away from Disney) and it has some really good rides!

Yes, its no where near the same as Disney, but you can have just as much fun on rides such as Jaws, Men in Black (like Buzz, but a bit harder) and loads of the rides at Islands of Adventure!

I would give it a go, it doesn't hold the same magic, but it is jolly good fun! Plus if you stay on property you get front of the line access!! :hyper:

Sounds good to me!

We have not been there is a while but my DH is talking about the whole Harry Potter thing so I see "U" in our future too. LOL. I dont mind it. I just think it is very different than Disney to me and more like an amusement park and not "memories" if that makes any sense. So stay on Disney property do some of your favorite things and then take her to Universal and do some new things. I think you will like it.

It's not so bad! You MUST stay at one of their resorts though for the FOTL access! MUST!! I would never do it without it. Their resorts are super though! I would compromise and do Universal first and add some Disney days with perhaps a spa visit to help her agree. You'll both feel better and I wouldn't be surprised if she were missing Disney after a few days at Universal.

I feel your pain, I've heard "rumblings" about trying "U" too. My niece is 12 and she still loves Disney, but she has started telling me about things she has heard about at Universal. She's subtle about it, I think she is trying to "ease" me into the idea. I know alot of people love "U", but I've just
never much interest, ok, any interest in it. In Feburary we took a day and went to Sea World...it was fun, it's a nice park, but well, you know, it wasn't Disney. I'm thinking with Harry Potter coming to "U" that'll be the time to take my niece, but I can't imagine we won't do Disney too. I can't imagine an all Universal trip. There is no way I could be that close and not go to Disney at all.

As you've heard me say on the show about a million times, Universal is a very different experience from Disney, but that's what makes it special (IMO).

I agree that staying on site at Universal is a must. All three hotels are excellent, but if you trying to appeal to the younger set, I think Hard Rock is a great option.

Keep in mind that Disney is only a 20 minute drive from Universal - so if you want to sneak in a few days at WDW, it's not that big a deal (and there are shuttles going from Universal to WDW).

I think if you keep an open mind, and do some research ahead of time so you know what to expect in terms of restaurants and attractions that you'll have a great time.

Pete

I also shriek in horror when someone tells me that they will be in Orlando and they won't be spending their entire time at WDW! But I've done it too :( The only thing I can say is prepare yourself. Pete is, of course, right (don't get a big-errr head Pete ;) ) If you come to terms with the fact that the "U" is a theme park but is NOT WDW (read "no magic") then you will be able to have fun. I may rot in WDW hell for saying this, but there are some terrific rides at the U and Suess land is a really cute area .. to walk through.

Remember, it's still a vacation :thumbsup2 You can have fun anywhere.

I must say I feel the pain..... but not because this has happened to me

I grew up with a Dad who could have been (IMO) as great as Disney. He loved everything that Disney stood for,and took me and my sister at least once a year since my birth! I know it is because of his passion that I can see the dream and inspiration that created Disney. so it is hard for me to even think about going anywhere else if I am in florida!

I did go to universal once but it was before Islands was there and the only ride I liked is now gone(king kong). I won't go back till Harry Potter is complete!

but I am sure you guys will enjoy yourselves for the memories alone! so research, and explore a new world! have fun:thumbsup2

I have never been to Universal and neither has my wife, but our time is this summer......maybe. We have 10 days planned and we are thinking we MIGHT take one day and go over to experience the Universal area. We have eaten over their twice (both emeril restaurants) and we enjoyed Citiwalk, but never did a park. We are thinking we will do get a 1 day/2 park pass and spend a day going through both parks. It will be nice to break up the trip, get off property, and see something that is new to both of us........at least that is what we are trying to convince ourselves is true!:rotfl2: I don't think U is a dirty word - it is just different. Who knows, maybe a Disney fan gets to appreciate Disney even more after a day or two at the U.

Did someone say there are Universal Podcasts? Who hosts that?

No doubt if I say we are doing U and then WDW too, she would be thrilled! I am just afraid once I do that, she will never do just WDW again ya know.

Exactly the way I see it ... "more like an amusement park and not "memories" " so it is just a matter of me MOM coming to grips that DD is getting older ;)

Right! I cant imagine not getting off the high at WDW and heading to Intern'l drive :confused3

Thanks Pete! And I am sure we will both have fun :goodvibes But it would mean I would have to except the fact that DD is past the all WDW phase and growing up :( and she is my last, so I am resisting.

BUTTT I do have a new GD that is 9 mos, so just when DD hits college and cant take the time for trips as much, GD will be about 5 and I can do it with her all over again :rotfl2: Oh the evil plans I have huh :rotfl2:

we have done many trips to WDW but Im actually looking forward to doing a future "U" trip at some point in the future.. Im hoping that we go and I absolutely hate it.. That way I will only have to go to Disney in future :lmao:
