Oh man... fractured femur :(

So last night, I came off my horse pretty hard. We were coming up to a jump and he ducked out at the last second, I went off his left side and landed on my left hip. I was in unbearable pain, and was promptly carted off to the ER. I have a small fracture at the very top of my femur, right where it meets my pelvis. Luckily, it isn't surgical and my time on crutches should only be a couple of weeks. However.. we leave for the World on December 8th!! Ugh this is gonna be a pain. Now I know I'm going to have to budget for an ECV. Just needed to vent about this, I so did not need this injury.

So sorry to hear about it.
For the best budget, you will want to check out renting from one of the off-site places. That is much less expensive than renting from the park every day. You will find information in post #2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of this board (or use the link in my signature to get there).

Sorry to hear this, as you said, not the most helpful timing . The ECV sounds like a very sensible idea indeed, and as Sue said, this generally works out a lot cheaper from external companies than direct from Disney. Also, with your own ECV you don't need to worry about rentals running out; they're generally a bit nippier and easier to drive; you have it to use at your hotel and for DTD; and, best of all, you can decorate it up!

Whichever company you decide to go with should be able to put a crutch-holder onto your scooter for you, for only a small extra cost. This will make it a lot easier for you, as you won't need to find somewhere to balance them while you're driving, or get someone else to carry them.

You might want to have a bit of a practice driving at your hotel, before you hit the parks. You'll need to practice reversing into spaces and parallel parking, as you'll need both of these to do the buses. I'm sure you'll be fine, you just need to get used to the controls and your new 'body space' (I'm guessing with riding and show jumping, that your spacial awareness is pretty good already, so that should help).

Just be warned that you will encounter a fair few people who are 'off in their own little world', and will probably wander straight in front of you. You shouldn't have too many problems, as the crowds shouldn't be too awful, but just be aware that you have to look everywhere while you're driving, because there are a few dingbats out there who won't!

My goodness you accident is sounding very much like mine. I had a BLM mustang and she was gentled and bonded to me. One winter day I thought to get on her bareback for the first time. Heck first time anything on her back. She did Wonderful! Then a horse from another pasture ran up and startled her. She moved, I slid, she bucked, I bounced, she bucked and down I went on my left hip. Just like you off to the ER, no surgery but a few days in hospital.

Way off the topic sorry. Forward 8 years, my left hip still hurts. Please get an ECV, this will an injury that takes a long time to heal and walking is very hard on the hip. Baby your hip and then when it is time, get into a good rehab program so you don't end up with a limp.

My goodness! Sorry about that. I have a broken bone, too. My 18-year-old son who has autism ran into me Sunday afternoon. I have a very sore hip and a broken elbow (radial head.) I'm hoping I'll be healed before December but I really know very little about how bones heal.

Sorry to hear about your mishap! You also might want to see if your dr will write you a script for a ECV rental and get one from home. This way it may be covered by your insurance and be a bit cheaper in the long run. I don't know if you can use a script from home to rent one down there, but it might be worth checking into.

Unfortunately Tricare doesn't cover DME rentals, only purchases. I'll be alright, I actually got in touch with a friend who lives 15 minutes from WDW, her gramma passed away 2 months ago and they still have her ECV. They're gonna let me borrow it for free

Hope you feel better soon. I've taken my dd to the ER several times over the years for falls off her horse. Thankfully nothing actually broke! The worst was when her horse slipped and they went down together...he was trying to avoid her and ended up rolling over her to stand up, kicking her (helmeted) head in the process. Her arm looked broken but wasn't. Oh the memories...glad she is at college now and only competing in dressage.

Were you doing stadium or X-C jumps?

Stadium luckily. It wasn't even that big! Maybe 2 feet at the most. I'm used to the huge 3 foot xc jumps, so I think I just got complacent. I had also dropped my stirrups, so I think that had a lot to do with it. It was a sand ring and we've gotten a lot of rain, the ring was actually harder than I expected.

My DD just finished healing from a femur fracter( she had to be on traction of 6 weeks and 1 week w/o wieght bearing). The Dr who's head of a major hospital( macmasters) told me that with a femur fracture you should be pain free by two weeks. Hopefully this is true for you.

I fractured mine in March & did Disney in June with a wheeling walker that has a little seat. We rented a wheelchair & I was best pushing the chair. I had more trouble sitting than walking.
I broke my hip where the femur joins. I was getting a ball my son threw on the roof & it landed in a pile of snow. I slipped & I landed flat on my foot & shoved my femur into the hip hard enough to crack it.
You can do it! Rest when you need to & don't over do it!

YOU CAN GO! I fracture my pelvis and had 3 pelvic reconstructions. On all of them I still went to Disneyland just 4 days after getting discharged fom hospital. Get yourself a wheelchair, be responsible and there is no reason why you wouldn't have a blast. I fractured mine horseback riding as well, I do Hunter/Jumpers(same as you from the looks of it).

Don't let this slow you down and go have some fun. Great mental rebooster.Feel free to pm me if you need any help with planning, I'm a pro at this.

After the last 2 reconstructions, I purposely booked a trip to Disneyland(I live in Canada by the way, so we flew down), the week following me being discharged from hospital. It's a great mental rebooster and with proper planning, you can easily make a trip down there(as long you behave). Feel free to pm and I'll give you some advice on how to plan this
