I figured if I'm ever going to lose weight I have to get moving. So at lunch time today I put my sneakers on and went for a walk. I go around the corner and there's a lot of cops and so I start walking towards the cops and the bridge I normally go over to go home. They have traffic stopped from going over the bridge but have no idea why then I start to see cops looking over the side so I'm thinking they had a jumper.
so I proceed to start to walk up the levy and the cops stop me. So I start walking up the street towards where i work and I see this older black lady and she starts asking me about what is going on and I tell her so we both start going up the levy down the street further. We get all the way to the top and are walking along the levy towards the bridge and we see a man hanging off the side as though he were going to jump. There are cops there trying to talk him down but he seems to be crying as he has his head down and keeps taking his one arm to wipe his eyes. The lady and I are saying how sad it was taht he thinks his problems are bad enough to want to die. We keep walking closer to the bridge and closer and we get up to a point and she says gee that looks like so and so (can't remember the name). But we continue talking and walking and then she begins to scream and wail, it was her brother hanging off that bridge! I tried to put my arms around her to calm her down and keep her from going closer when the police came running up the levy and she was screaming that's my brother, that's my brother.
He kept telling her to go away as the screaming may scare her brother or upset him and make him jump but she wanted to try to talk him down. They wouldn't let her though as not being professional she'd start crying and he may feel so bad he'd jump. So they motioned to a streets dept truck to come up and he drove up the Levy and we were able to get her in the truck and they took her down to the bottom of the bridge to wait with the other police.
I stayed up on the top and watched and I'm so thankful that they finally talked him back in. I was so scared he'd jump. No one survives jumping in the Red River because of the heavy current, the little whirlpools and the fact that it's so murky you can't see anyone once they go down.
Thank God he was watching over that man today! What a way to spend your lunch hour!
