Official Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend 2020

I am using a 10K from last May as of now - I know I am in better shape (just did a virtual half in 1:50) but hope my 10K POT (50:51) gets me a good corral (2-course challenge)

Based on my past experiences that will put you solidly in 'B' for the half and most likely 'A' for the 10K

Hi all, I was disappointed that the Star Wars RR race didn't work out, but now I'm getting excited about the Wine & Dine!

Although the W&D 1/2 marathon was full by the time SWRR was canceled, I've applied with a charity that had some spots open, so I'm hoping that works out. So that's my first question: I have no idea what the application process means; does anyone know if it is more of a formality, or do they have some sort of criteria that might keep me out?

Also, my wife is anxious to sign up for the ChEAR Squad and the Post-Race Party, but we don't want to get committed to that if for some reason I don't get in the race. I know some Disney tickets, like the Villains After Hours, aren't refundable, but you can cancel and the funds can be used for a future special event. Does anyone know if ChEAR Squad and/or the party fall into that category?

This will be our first runDisney event (and my first race ever, unless I get into something in the meantime)! Thanks for any information!

Each charity has their own rules so you would have to clear that stuff with them. I haven't really heard of anyone being turned away from a charity.

I would definitely wait until you are in for the race. I believe they are non-refundable much like anything else. ChEAR squad and the after party can't be used for anything else, they aren't like normal Disney tickets these are runDisney exclusive things.

Well, you are a lot faster than me I would think that would give you a great corral! My POT for the Fairy Tale Challenge back in 2018 was 1:01 (10k), and I was in Corral B for the 10K and C for the half. Not sure if this race is similar to the Princess, but you should be in at least B I would think!

You can Google to find previous years' corral placements based on expected finish, which will give you a good idea where you'll be. The conversion from 10K to a half is basically the MacMillan calculator. I think it's about a 30 second per mile difference between 10K and half pace.

I had been using a 50:22 10k and I was always in B, very close to A

Now I’m starting to feel cautiously optimistic this will still go on just perhaps with limited on course entertainment as the Press Release for Paris’s cancellations says they look forward to the September event

you’re doing a half marathon as your first race ever? I’d try to do a 5k and a 10K before the w&d if possible. Straight to a half is quite a jump.

With everything going on right now (both globally and for me on a personal level), I'm starting to think about targetting a late October/early November half ... so I'm really regretting not signing up for Wine & Dine. Sigh. Anyone have a time machine I can use to go back and register?

I ran the virtual 1/2 marathon (in 2:36) at the beginning of this month, and wasn't in too bad a shape afterwards. As I said, I've never been in an actual race environment though, so for all I know it could be a whole different experience. (I'm hoping it actually might be a little easier, since I had to carry along my own hydration for the virtual. )

At 55 and it being a whole different level from anything I've ever done before, I'm certainly not trying to push it too much, but I do hope to improve my time before the W&D.

Congrats for all your work. I'd still try to do a race before then because yeah the environment is different. The adrenaline can make you do strange things.

I'll give you a story from my experience. Year I started running I did PTRR (10K) in July then my first half marathon at Disney in January. next year went back to PTRR and went in very overconfident. I set a personal record for a 5k due to adrenaline in the race and the first 5k is mostly downhill... too bad I was running a 10K. The uphills started at mile 4 and I got wiped out due to burning too much energy on the first half I finished by miles 5 and 6 were not fun...

Sounds like you are in good shape and doing well but I'd still suggest doing a race or two before W&D. The biggest issue is exactly what I stated above - going out too hard too fast due to adrenaline and then having issues. Just a suggestion since I want you to have the best time you can.

Keep scoping the site! You could also run with a charity.

Right now there seems to be a lot of speculation in some Facebooks groups about the Wine & Dine race happening at all. But I’m trying to stay overly optimistic and believe this will be the first run Disney race that takes place after all the corona madness. I sincerely hope life is a little bit back on track by then!

Does anyone have any good information on traditional running shoes vs. minimalist shoes? I've been running recreationally in minimalist shoes for maybe 6 years now, so I'm used to the shorter strides and the mid-foot strike, but until I started training for the SWRR half marathon I was mainly running about 3 miles at a time, (sometimes once or twice a week and sometimes going a while between runs).

So I'm pretty happy with my current shoes (Merrell Vapor Gloves), and haven't had any issues or injuries, but I don't know if I should be transitioning to more traditional running shoes for these longer distances. Any thoughts? Thanks!
