Official Wine and Dine 2016 thread

I'm not upset--- but I get that I am NOT in the majority here. I like running in the mornings.
Me too!!!!! But you already know what, lol! ;)

Actually, I take that back about the course:

  • 13.1-mile course through ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Disney's Animal Kingdom® Theme Park & Epcot®
Interesting...

Based on the course description, this is roughly my guess. It's not the full 13.1 because there are in park twists and turns that google maps won't let me mess with.
It seems like they try not to use Buena Vista for races, since it's such a major artery - think they would for this? I can see them adding miles in WWOS...

I'm glad to see the $15 gift card still included. I think honestly people need to lighten up , seriously it's a race not the end of the world. So much angst on FB, I just got called out for saying I like the morning idea. It's sad that it looks like Studios isn't included, but I will say after what happened last year I was worried about signing up this year if a night storm happened again. I was signing up no matter what, but still worried.
I mean...I'm disappointed about it. Especially with how crazy things got on Monday, and with them making the announcement so late. People had already planned and booked stuff...it's disappointing. :confused3
EDIT: Especially since they still had it listed as a night race up until today. That was a little crappy of them.
I can see them adding miles in WWOS...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

*Post deleted because apparently I can't express myself in a way that doesn't make me sound like a terrible person, so I'm just not going to try*

Given now that the expo begins on Thursday, is it safe to say that everything will be sold out by Friday morning? :(
Everything? Nope. I never go to expos early and have always found merchandise still available. Is ti everything that was there when it opened? Maybe not, but I've always found something I like.

I was coming to post this, but figured a ton of people would beat me to it!

I figured they'd add a 10K and challenge. Not surprised! :)

Yay, challenge
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO in general. I would rather no challenge.

My letter to RD:

Not sure if this is even a monitored email address - but as a long time runDisney participant who has tried every one of your non-female specific races (not for lack of desire to do them but because I understand women want to have a women's race so I intentionally leave it to them), but hey why not, while I'm happy to finally have the info I think this is a huge mistake. I totally understand the reasoning behind this - you needed to add capacity and deal with the fairness issues associated with Corral A runners finishing and getting 2 hours more afterparty then Corral L finishers. I understand how if you added a daytime 10k, it wouldn't really draw people away from the half because people would be looking for that nighttime experience. But the solution here isnt to take away the nighttime experience. You could have had the 10k at night as well the day before, but then that leads to the problem of well do they get an afterparty (and hey I'm all for having 2 afterparties! but I certainly see the problems it would cause). The other option would have been to have 2 different races going off at the same time - this would have reduced the half marathon load significantly, but would have required you to realistically have either 2 separate starting areas, or more easily, use the left side of the road for the half, and the right side of the road for the 10k. But then no challenge, which means no extra entry fees/etc. While I don't envy you making these decisions I wish there was a way to keep the character of this race while addressing the capacity issues.

The whole experience of the night race was why this race sold out in MINUTES or less. In fact anyone in business can tell you when you have a product that's that hot, smart money doesn't get rid of that, you do more of it. You should have taken the Wine and Dine template and stamped out another race weekend or two that seemed exactly like it but with its own twist. If you wanted to double down on this idea easily a night race with after party - Star Wars finishing into Flower and Garden for a night party would have been spectacular, and would have actually sold out unlike the current version of the race. Yes Tower of Terror was never quite as popular but that is because it was literally competing with this race a month later, and the after party in DHS didn't even come close to the EPCOT experience. The park was crowded, cramped, the food and drink selections were pathetic to say the least, and the course cut the park cleanly in half causing all kinds of issues. You could barely go anywhere without having to deal with that.

But now the after party is going to be no different from any of MNSSHP or MVMCP, just at EPCOT. Its going to be something people goto, not a party after a long run. In fact I would almost even caution you that you're going to have to restrict sales of after party tickets as anyone who happens to be in the park that weekend might just want to buy those tickets, making it too crowded to be functional. You're not going to have people walking around with their bibs and running costumes, the little bit of a limp going station to station to get food. The smiles of accomplishment of people who literally just finished their first half marathon and can't wait to tell you all about it. The sage advice from us experienced folks like "oh you're having trouble going down the hill, try walking backwards". The general camaraderie of 1000s of fellow runners all walking around meeting each other. You're not going to have the giant line of friends and family who are all waiting for their runners coming in cheering. You wont get the amazing exeriences of the parks at night, running through animal kingdom in the dark is almost haunting some years, and rivers of light could have been awesome. The reason this race was so popular was its uniqueness in your lineup of events.

You're going to have to pull something amazing off to set these "new" races apart from the older Wine and Dines as you have a lot of expectations to meet. I hope you keep that in mind in the planning of this event. And really plan something to knock peoples socks off to get them to forget the experience of the previous Wine and Dine's.

My prediction...

10K and challenge sell out ridiculously quickly
Followed by 5K
Half Marathon hangs on for awhile

So basically what has been happening with all other rD race weekends lately...because now this weekend is just like all other rD race weekends.

As I suspected!! Like they've done with the other races. Excellent!!

Email is out... morning race, addition of a 10 k, and a 2 course challenge..... and more disappointing is the sunday race :(

Agreed!

I was just trying to be optimistic and come up with something different instead of the boring out and back Osceola parkway. I also think if they were to do something like this people would be off Buena Vista sooner than my lame little thing shows- I wasn't going to fight google maps over back roads and such. This idea was based on nothing at all than my own desire that Disney changes courses and NOT add extra miles in WWoS! :upsidedow

I gotta chime in because Wine & Dine is very near and dear to my heart (first race, first half, in 2012, just awesome)....

To be honest, I find morning races "easier." But making this a morning race seems to "lose" something of the vibe of this race. This race was the "party" race. Not taking anything away from the seriousness of the runners (you gotta be at least half serious to run a half) or the fun of the other weekends (I've done 3 others and enjoyed them all). But this was different. Wine & Dine is just a nighttime thing. (I could see a nighttime star wars or avengers race also). I'm glad they are still keeping a post-race party. And yes, I would be able to enjoy both the party and the race more as there are special challenges to running a night race successfully. But there was something really awesome about running through the parks and WDW at night.

I am holding out hope that they change it back once the construction at the Studios is complete. I don't buy the nighttime entertainment excuse. The first runners didn't his AK until pretty late and the Studios even later than that. And it's ONE day for them to close those two parks early. The cost of the entry fees for these races far outweighs the cost that they charge for the special holiday parties when they close MK at 7pm. (no, I didn't do the exact math).

I think the change was made because of the course change. The only way to make up for not going to the studios was to go through Epcot (and probably some extra WWOS) and they couldn't do that while the party was going on.

I LOVE the change. I always felt like Saturday was a wasted day just relaxing because I didnt want to wear out my feet. I even mentioned I would like to see this become a morning race some pages back (thought I was dreaming then). I also LOVE the idea of a 10K and Challenge. It's exactly what I had hoped would happen! I would be all in for this however since they changed the registration date, I now can't sign up.

Wow. Go in the hospital for a week and runDisney ruins a great thing and this thread doubles in size! Off to catch up....

We'll still do the race and while I liked the appeal of the night time race, my body will for sure be better prepared for a morning race because things always feel better then. I'm not looking forward to the extras the sun brings though - sunblock, sunglasses, heat etc. I can't wear a hat because my head gets too hot and would wear sunglasses anyway because I wear them on cloudy days.

The one bummer is we had been hoping to do MVMCP on Sunday, if the first party is that night, and now this will change that. I wish they would release the dates for that now.

Try a visor? I like them better than hats.

I think 11/6 is the last MNSSHP, not the first MVMCP this year. Sort of weird, normally MK is done up for Christmas during Wine & Dine, but this year it'll be Halloween.
