Official Wine and Dine 2016 thread

Hi all!

Been lurking for awhile as I plan to run W&D this year. Just today read about the changes, and my two cents:

A little disappointed that the race isn't at night now. I'm from Oregon and the evening race was more like normal home run hours. That said, I am excited about the 10k and challange, and plan to take advantage of the 3 day reduced PH tickets and so will likely arrive at EPCOT earlier than 8 pm.

The Sunday AM half ruined my half baked plans to catch a cruise that afternoon in Ft. Lauderdale as hubby and I have done in years passed, but there are alternate Caribbean plans immediately following, so it's all good.

For me, Run Disney events are longer distance goals for me to look forward to and celebrate. And the event keeps me motivated. It's not always easy to stay on track with a running plan, but having a race at Disney as my end goal helps. So really, I don't much care about the details. I don't care what parks I run through, or the Osborne Lights, or even character meet and greets. The race is my treat to enjoy after all the build up of training, and I travel all the way across country to do it, as part of a vacation (mini or huge, depending). Maybe if I lived in Florida or running came as some easy and natural thing for me, I would feel differently.

I guess hope the Challange doesn't sell out before April, which is when I will have slush funds to pay for it. :-)

Also, unless you are buying from some other place with discounts, they may not offer discounted park tickets anymore for this race. They stopped discounted tickets for the larger race weekends, and this one looks to be going that way. I just wouldnt absolutely count on the discount, is all. But I agree on your point of disney races being a great motivator!

I agree with so much here!!! For me, so much of it is bundled together--the race justifies the trip, it makes me feel like the trip was valuable and useful (keeping a fitness goal) and to be honest, I am not super motivated to work out with out an external goal. The trip means the race is not optional (registration is the least of the related expenses! hotel, meals, tickets, flights...) so I know there is basically no justifiable reason to back out except illness/injury/tragedy. So I train. And if it was just a local race I would simply not be so excited, so invested. Costume design, etc... it kees me, a natural bookworm, hitting the pavement at least every other day. Even in Ohio where the weather may suck and I may still be hurting. Which is more than I can say for any other weight loss/fitness goals I have had. Proof is in the times & weight--I have lost a decent chunk of weight and I did my practice 6.2 miler Sat 30 min faster than I ran the Marathon Weekend 10k. I may have time to get a photo with Darth Maul/Boba Fett after all!!!

It says that a parent can run with a kid during the one-mile run. Does the parent need a separate registration, or does just the kid need to be signed up? Thanks!

The parent does not need to be signed up I do not think. We run the shorter distances with our preschoolers and we just line up with them.

I'm 99% sure you just run with your child, you don't need any form of separate registration. At least that's how the other kids races are. In January the parents just lined up with the kids and either ran with them or kind of hovered behind.

Or in my case, my 3-year old took off way ahead of me and my pregnant butt was left huffing and puffing behind him...

As someone who is not speedy and takes my time to enjoy snapping photos along the course, I would say that runDisney has not cared about this issue in the first six times they held this race, why would they start now? The benefit now would be that there wouldn't be thousands of sweaty, dehydrated, runners who just completed a half on wobbly warn legs waiting at bag check.
I'm really just speculating, but in my mind, the difference is that we're talking partiers AND regular park guests all entering EP; that puts the onus on park operations to handle crowd management, not rD. And historically, parks operations is a lot better at handling things. Of course we won't know how things will go until we get there, but I'm really not worried about it. :)

I hate to break it to you, but I highly doubt the registration for the W&D Challenge will last longer than an hour or two, if even that long, much less multiple days.

Do not give up hope! The initial set of bibs will sell out quickly, but there may be options later on. Sign up for email notifications from the travel partners (Acclaim is who I have used, but I've talked to others and they're all nice people.) It seems the demand may be slipping over the past year, and lately the travel agents have been getting batches of bibs all the way up to the close of registration about a month out, even when it says 'Sold Out' on the website.

That's true, but it could be tougher for this race weekend, as both the 10K AND the challenge are inaugural.

Having said that, I did just see a TA post about availability for the Dark Side Challenge (also inaugural), so you never know...

Ok I am a moron who is getting her dates messed up with all this moving around. Early registration for DVC is NEXT Tuesday, right, not this Tuesday? Thanks!!

Based on previous experience, can anyone provide the exact info required to sign up for the races? There's a good chance that I'll be flying at the time of registration, so I might have my brother take care of this for me.

Make sure you make your Active.com account ahead of time. You'll need one to register!

What role does this play when signing up? Is that for the "Proof of time" submissions? Bc if so I've never actually participated in a running event. If that's the case do I still need this account?

True. I think a lot of people who were on waiting lists with travel agents for Wine and Dine last year did end up getting in.

Anyway, it's funny how one week can completely change your outlook and plans. Last week at this time I had no thoughts of even trying to go back for this event this year. Even though I loved the idea of Wine and Dine, I had my eyes on other event weekends since I want to do one of the challenges. Now I can't stop thinking about it and am 99% sure I want to go back, because the themes of the 10K and challenge are so tempting to me, and I love the thought of participating in an inaugural event. The only downside would be I'd need to use my personal day for Friday to get to the expo, which would mean leaving Sunday afternoon and no after race park time or after party. :( I'm so glad the registration ended up getting delayed so I can think about it a bit.

You won't be able to register without an account (this is something runDisney has started doing over the last year or so). You can either make it ahead of time or do it right as registration is happening. It's your name, address, date of birth...I think that's it. Then after registration you can log in and update your proof of time.

I am looking to do the Lumiere Challenge in November, but does anyone know how quickly registration actually fills up for runDisney events? I've never done one and just trying to get an idea at how aggressive I need to be about booking.

You'll need to be on immediately at registration time (be ready to go even before that) because it will go fast. Some of the challenges in the past have sold out in around 30 minutes.
