Official Wine and Dine 2016 thread

I ran the Harrisburg Half this morning, and I know others from this group did as well. My race was not good! It was apparent early on that my knee was not going to cooperate. I had to slow things way down and do more walking than I would like. I amazingly convinced DH to run ahead without me. (I slow him down on a good day so today was not the day to stick together.) While the race was physically and emotionally tough, and my slowest ever, I finished, so that's something. I called off work tonight because I don't think I could handle standing for 6-7 hours on my knee. I feel horrible doing that, but my husband said I need to take care of myself so I can be in the rest of the week. DH thinks I need to try to get my knee looked at by a doctor so I will call tomorrow. I have another half on the books in two weeks, plus Hershey in mid October and Lumiere's Challenge, so I don't have a lot of rest time. But at least slow and steady got me through today's half!
Sorry it wasn't great for you but hey you finished! Hope your knee isn't anything too serious & you can still do your other races, maybe just some special exercises or stretches will help.

We found out last weekend that I am pregnant! It is a complete surprise since we had such a hard time getting pregnant with my son. Never thought it would happen again, but are so happy it did. I'm not really comfortable doing a half marathon while pregnant so we decided to just cancel the trip. Really bummed as we were staying in the GRand for the first time and trying some new restaurants I was looking forward to. Oh well, it's for a good reason.

Congrats!!

Anyway, I already bought my daughter and sister a ticket to the after party if anyone if is need of two tickets.
Congratulations!! :yay:

I also did the Harrisburg Half. What an early arriving crowd! I got there about an hour prior to the start, and the parking lots on the north side of the island were already well over 70% full, and there was a 10 minute line for the potties. I wasn't happy with my time, but it is the first time since October 2015 that I've run 13.1 miles. And, finally, I completed a half marathon that was the appropriate distance. I feel like I under-trained for this. With the summer heat and humidity, I had a number of 6-9 miles runs, but not enough at 10 miles or longer.
Currently, my next race is 11/5, but I've already told DW that I'm itching to hit either the Hershey 1/2, or Hanover 1/2 in October. I may just keep training for W&D and not schedule anything, though. Last fall, I would run a distance twice prior to increasing by 1 mile in length. This was based on the Physical Therapist's plan for my calf injury rehab. It was working well (great, even), until I pushed 3 straight long runs of 13.1 (last was 1 week prior to Hershey 1/2 relay). Since I think I know where I went wrong, I may go back to that plan, so I'm really ready for November.

Sorry your race wasn't what you wanted. I wish I'd found you in the mass of runners. After the race, I was a walking zombie, just trying to keep stretching and intake food and water.
I thought that start was one of the least chaotic of any race I've ever run.

The start wasn't that chaotic at all. (And people were there early. I know we picked up our bibs that morning and had a lot of extra time.) I was very back of the pack this race. My husband ran around a 2:30. Me, not so much! With my knee I'm just happy I finished though! We are doing Hershey so if you see the crazy red curly hair in a messy bun wearing a Sparkle Skirt, it's likely me! DH has a crazy "I just retired from the military" beard. Come say hi! We'll be at Hershey for the half, although I'm kind of wishing we'd signed up for the relay just for my poor knee.

Hershey got me with that cute peanut butter cup medal! But it doesn't fit in with my training schedule at all so we'll see. Normally I am married to the Galloway training plan, however I too felt a little undertrained for this half. Due to my knee I never ran above 8 miles before this half. (Well, not since Princess in February.)

Sorry it wasn't great for you but hey you finished! Hope your knee isn't anything too serious & you can still do your other races, maybe just some special exercises or stretches will help.

Thanks! I'm trying to strengthen it with some weights and other exercises I've seen online. Plus lots of stretching. My next race is the Diva 1/2 in DC in two weeks so I hope it's better enough to at least not be in pain the whole time and be able to stick to my intervals.

@lovingeire sorry you had a tough race! Smart to rest that knee...hope you're feeling better soon. :)

Thanks! I feel a lot better this morning. Sore, but more normal I ran a half marathon sore than anything else. Not having trouble standing or walking with my knee. So that's a good sign that the rest and stretching helped.

We did the Hershey Half relay last year. I went first, to get us under the minimum pace, so DW could just enjoy it. Plus- I had less issues running through Hershey Park than she did during the 10k. Some of the turns and elevation changes are quick. She did the second half, which, other than some hills, she loved. In fact: she declared that we would do it again, but not as a relay team. She found the running surface during the back half to be very nice (freshly paved, it seems), and the kids from the Milton Hershey school were incredibly supportive. Unfortunately, a few days later, knee pain settled in (fall 2015), so we've postponed it for this year.

DW went to a sports medicine MD last week, as her knee pain has returned. Told to take 2 weeks off from running, and schedule PT. He feels she should be fine by W&D.

Hi! I'm running the Diva half in Leesburg too! This is a local race for me and my first half! I've been having trouble with my knee as well! I ran 12 miles 1.5 weeks ago and had to nearly walk the entire last mile. I've been running only 3-3.5 miles 3x a week since and it's been good. Still worried for next weekend! I'll be sure to say hi if I see the crazy red curly hair in a bun! Lol!

Thanks for the tips on Hershey! DH thinks I need to see a sports medicine doctor, but I don't relish the process of a referral. So while rest this week has helped, it is really is probably my next step, but I seem to be procrastinating it. Maybe putting off news I don't want to hear.

Awesome! Please say hi if you see me! (My name is Gretchen) I'll be wearing a pink tank top and black sparkle skirt too! Hopefully both of our knees will hold up. My BFF said if we have to walk it we will, she's not worried about time, which is very sweet of her, but I'd like to be able to run! At this point I'd be happy to run more than this past weekend!

Hi Gretchen! I sure will if by chance we bump into each other. I'll be in a tickled pink sparkle skirt and a white tank (boy that narrows it down, huh...lol) good luck and here's to both of our knees and hopefully running most of the way! Cheers!

Hi everybody. Thanks for all the great advice so far.

I plan to go to the Expo on Friday 11/4. I'm arriving in town very early that morning so I could go anytime from 10-7. What time do you recommend to minimize the crowds? Thanks!

I'm also planning on going that day and I'm thinking afternoon (2-3 PM or around lunch?). I went at opening in 2014 and it was sort of a mess.

We did the same last year ... We also arrive that morning and are planning to 'check our bags' (room or concierge) and then go on over to the expo. We're conflicted by need to get our bibs and wanting to eat our way around the world when it opens!

Afternoon like 3:00pm has been least crowded for me at other race weekends. I hit marathon weekend at like 6:00pm and it wasn't too crowded either on the first day of it this year. We'll probably go Thursday (need to go first day since we are doing 5k Friday) around 5:30/6:00pm maybe.

I thought you were doing the 5K along with the Challenge? Wouldn't you have to go on Thursday?

I'm hoping to be at the expo on Thursday in the early afternoon, depending on if I can get the day off work and if our flight is on time. If one of those things doesn't work out, I'll plan to go sometime Friday. I sent an email to the HR director of the school district today asking about the days off request, so hopefully I get a response back soon. I explained that these plans were made before I was hired back, so I hope they can be flexible even though I know it's not an ideal situation.
