Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

So help... first major concern is the net. We have wireless BUT it requires a password when you get online through our apartment complex so I have no idea how to access it. Any ideas?

I think you'll have to ask whoever manages the connection for your apartment complex.

I have no idea.
Sorry! :confused3

How does the Wii sit? Does it stand upright? If so, do you need a stand or does it come with it? We are planning on putting our Wii on our entertainment center and I was hoping that it would stand upright rather than lay flat so that we can put the charger next to it.

Also, how far away from the unit should you be? Our living room is kind of small so most of the time we will be about 3 - 4 feet from the unit. Is that too close?

Okay, so I need help making the Not Recommended list.

I've got:
1. Brunswick Bowling (not based on ign)
2. Cars (not recommended for young, inexperienced players. Based on thread reviews)
3. Alvin and the Chipmonks
4. Mini Desktop racing
5. Balls of Fury
6. Offroad Extreme SE
7. Hooked Real Motion Fishing
8. Pool Party
9. Dave Mira BMX
10. Anubis II
11. Chicken Shoot
12. Bratz: Movie Stars
13. Legend of the Dragon
14. Hot Wheels Racing
15. Cruis'n
16. Looney Tunes Acme Arsenal
17. Rapala Fishing
18. NBA Live 08
19. Spider-man Friend or Foe
20. Victorious Boxers
21. Boogie
22. Donkey Kong Barrell Blast
23. Ant Bully
24. Happy Feet
25. Tony Hawk's Proving ground
26. Escape from Bug Island
27. Far Cray Vengence
28. Rampage
29. GT Pro
30. World Series of Poker.

All of these were rated under a 5 from IGN (except Cars). The ones at the bottom of the list are better than those at the top.

If you see something you really love let me know. And if you play anything really horrible let me know and I can add it.

Note: Nothing on the list hasn't been rated by IGN, which means there are a ton of other games that weren't even good enough to be reviewed.

It comes with a stand so you can stand it upright. That's the way it is in all the commercials.

Well that is pretty close, but some games (Rayman) make you be within 4 feet, so I don't think you'll have any problems there. The thing I would worry about is mulitplayer stuff. Everyone needs a bit of room to move around.

We have a tiny living room too. And we haven't had any issues.

Wow two of my games made it onto the list but i plan on takingthe bowling back but i plan on keping chicken shoot..lol...thanks for the list, ill make sure to read some reviews before buying.

Thanks! I thought it stood upright.

As for the space, the way the room is set up width isn't so much of a problem as the depth is so it sounds like we should be ok. If we find that it isn't working well we will just move it to our game room (where it should be anyway but that is a completely different issue  )

No worries. IGN doesn't take things like price into account too often. They might mention it. But usually their mentality is that if it's a bad game, it doesn't matter how much it costs. :confused3

I think you'll be fine! :teeth:

ok i have another dumb question, this time its for a friend, i swear..lol. He bought a gamecube game, some star wars saga thing for the wii for his son, and then he asked the girl where he bought it if the classic controlle would work on this and she said yes, so my question to you experts is does the wii classis controller work on the old gamecube games???

For you DS users, how age appropriate would Nintendogs be for a 5.5 year old? My DD is starting to play with my DS and is getting fairly good at it. We were going to buy the new game for her Leapster where she would take care of a puppy - but I'm sure Nintendogs is probably a lot more detailed. But is there a lot of text? Would she need to be able to read in order to play it effectively (without too much help from me?)? She's starting to read but I think it's probably going to be another year or so before she can read very well.

Also, maybe this has been asked before, but what are everyone's opinions on kid friendly games for the Wii? We just got ours this week and it's great fun, but I can see the Wii Sports getting old pretty quickly. We have Sonic/Mario Olympics on order but probably another week before we get it.

Thanks all!!! :santa:

I'm really sorry if this has been covered, but I don't have time to read all through this entire thread. Our girls are getting a Wii. We've got two controllers so far, but at looking at the EA Playground I think we will want 4 controllers. So, DH and I are getting controllers in our stocking to make a total of four so we can all play dodgeball together and the other games on that one. We only have one of the nunchucks, the one that comes with it. Do we NEED to get three more?

I've really spent more than I wanted to begin with doing the extras and games. So I was thinking DDs could use their money to buy the extra nunchucks. Will we be okay for a while with just the one?

Also, do I want the charger for the remotes?

Some of them. I think, but not all. Actually that might be wrong. I think it might work on all downloaded and Gamecube games. I'm sure it says on the package. Dh proabablt knows for sure.

I think she can have fun with it, but she might need help from you if she isn't reading yet. There is a lot of reading involved, but she'll probably pick it up very quickly and then won't need you very much. I would go ahead and get it. It will actually help her learn to read since she'll see the same words (in menus) repeated and things.

There is a list of family Wii games in the very first post on this thread. :teeth: My favs (especially for non readers) are Mario Party 8, Carnival games, and EAs Playground.

DD10 has Nintendogs and DD6 caught onto it quicker than DD10. Of course, because of reading I think that DD6 doesn't get it as well as she could, but she really enjoys it. Enough that DD10 has given her the game.

Some games need every player to have a nunchuck and some don't. It definitely appears to be the trend that all players are needing them with the newer games. I don't have Playground, but I can probably figure it out.

I recommend you buy the extra nunchucks when you buy a game that needs them. On the back of every game in the top right corner it lists what controllers are needed. It's not always very clear though.

The IGN review says that Playground doesn't use nunchucks at all. Can someone who has it confirm this please?

I recommend a charger for the wii-motes--the Nyko one, it's between $19.99-$29.99. It is completely up to you, but the wii-motes suck the life out of batteries very quickly. You can also use regular recharagbels if you want, but I like having a dedicated wiimote charger.

Could you share where to find it at $19.99? Thanks!

Okay I looked it up. This is from a review of the Classic Controller on Amazon. I can't vouch for the accuracy, but I think it's right:

the Wii Classic controller cannot be used to play any GameCube titles, and there are currently no Wii-specific titles that require a Wii Classic Controller. By contrast, Nintendo GameCube controllers may be used for all GameCube titles and currently all Wii Virtual Console titles.

So your 'friend' ;) should consider buying a Game Cube controller instead of the Classic. I've seen some Wavebirds (wireless) for sale at used games stores. You'll pay more for it, but it is wireless (unlike the classic) and you get the real feel of what the game was supposed to be like on the GC.

I'll have DH confirm this later.

Could you share where to find it at $19.99? Thanks!

I've seen it on sale for that price, but the regular price is $29.99 and at this time of the year, I doubt you'll see it cheaper. But keep on eye on the ads. If you need to try and use regular batteries for a while you can, but you'll probably spend at least the extra $10 on them while you wait for a sale.

thank you very much, i will tell him and thats good cuz maybe i wil buy me a gamecube controller for the virtual stuff cuz that way its cheaper...lol

The Classic Controller is only $19.99.

And I'm reasonably sure that there are games that need the classic controller now when using the Virtual Console. But he/you may not want to download any of those games.

I still recommend using GC controllers for GC games.

no i already set him your post, but i was trying to cut corners for whne i download virtual games...hahah, i guess ill just get it eventually, i still want to best the original super mario from whnei was a kid...lol, its a life goal...lol
