Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

Okay I looked it up. This is from a review of the Classic Controller on Amazon. I can't vouch for the accuracy, but I think it's right:

So your 'friend' ;) should consider buying a Game Cube controller instead of the Classic. I've seen some Wavebirds (wireless) for sale at used games stores. You'll pay more for it, but it is wireless (unlike the classic) and you get the real feel of what the game was supposed to be like on the GC.

I'll have DH confirm this later.

I've seen it on sale for that price, but the regular price is $29.99 and at this time of the year, I doubt you'll see it cheaper. But keep on eye on the ads. If you need to try and use regular batteries for a while you can, but you'll probably spend at least the extra $10 on them while you wait for a sale.

I know you've probably been over this before but.... If we use rechargeable batteries (just until I find a nyko charger on sale--I just hate to pay full price! !), how long can we expect them to work per charge? Also, what size battery does it take? I have put my wii away and can't check because I am out of town now (I am at my mom's--she has had back surgery:sad1: and I have to stay here with her until she is better, don't think I'll have time for more shopping once I get home).

Do you have rechareables already? If not, getting the batteries & charger will cost more than the full price Nyko charger. Each kind of rechargeable will have different shelf lives.

So choose one. Either rechargeables OR the Nyko charger. You don't want both for just the Wii.

It takes double AAs.

Hope your mom feels better! :flower3:

Time for me to add to and give more indepth answers about things the DW is less knowledgeable.

So help... first major concern is the net. We have wireless BUT it requires a password when you get online through our apartment complex so I have no idea how to access it. Any ideas?

It depends on how the router is set. You can search for the wi-fi signal through the wii's menu. Once it finds the signal it will ask for the password since it's password protected. Enter the password and click connect it will try to make the connection. If the router is set up wrong you will not be able to connet, at that point you will have to talk to the building tech guy.
If it connects you are good to go!

No worries. IGN doesn't take things like price into account too often. They might mention it. But usually their mentality is that if it's a bad game, it doesn't matter how much it costs. :confused3

I think you'll be fine! :teeth:
Why confused hun??? A BAD GAME IS A BAD GAME!!! I don't care if it's free it's still trash! That's why price should never be conisdered in a reivew. Cuz if it's bad it isn't worth wasteing time on!

ok i have another dumb question, this time its for a friend, i swear..lol. He bought a gamecube game, some star wars saga thing for the wii for his son, and then he asked the girl where he bought it if the classic controlle would work on this and she said yes, so my question to you experts is does the wii classis controller work on the old gamecube games???
thank you very much, i will tell him and thats good cuz maybe i wil buy me a gamecube controller for the virtual stuff cuz that way its cheaper...lol

NO-Nope, Nada, No Way, Never! If you are playing a Gamecube game you will have to play with a gamecube controller...end of story.

As for VC games....buy the Classic controller! The GC controler will work on many, but not all of them, so if you plan to download neo-geo or Turbo Graphix 16 games you will need the classic controler. You probably don't need one right away however...search the downloadable games they will tell you what controller(s) you can use to play them.

Okay, forgive me gamers for what will probably be a stupid question. This is the first video game system I've ever bought. (Though I did have an Atari as a kid.) Anywho, all this talk about Game Cube games...Do you need to have an actual Game Cube or do those games fit into the wii and you only need the controller?

Mom says thanks! It's gonna be rough going for a while.

I already own 8AA rechargeables and a charger, all of which were for my old camera, so notin use anymore so they are much cheaper than buying that nyko charger right now. ($0 as opposed to $30= better deal!:) :) )

I fully understand Maggie...I've done this kind of thing before myself, I just thought I'd warn you as to the "cost" if she does do it. Not everyone realizes that this kind of thing has a "cost" to it. I guess I should have been more descriptive rather then yelling DO NOT at you! Sorry if I offended you.

No worries. I didn't take it as anything other than the friendly warning that it was intended to be. Maggie

We use rechargable AAs in our WiiMotes. They work great! They seem to last many hours and DS plays many hours. It hasn't been a problem for us at all. Especially since you said you had 8 batteries. We're not often using more than 2 WiiMotes at a time so 4 batteries can be charging while 4 batteries are being used. No problem, you'll do fine. We don't intend to get the charger for the wiimotes as it would be kind of a pain with the set up of our living room and we don't really have the room for a stand type thing. We're doing fine with rechargeable batteries and you will too!

Now, on a different note, a mini review.
DS received Lego Star Wars Complete Saga for his birthday today and he and DH are having lots of fun with the light saber WiiMotes. DH is disappointed that all you really have to do is wiggle your wrist to make the character swing the light saber. He wants the character to do exactly what he does when he swings. I actually think it's easier that all you need to do is swing and you don't have to actually "act out" the light saber battle. Anyway, DS says it starts out the same as the game cube lego starwars but with lots more hidden stuff and unlockables and more "powers" or whatever they're called, maybe more "moves". Whatever! Anyway, he's played both lego star wars for game cube and says this is similar but much better.

No stupid questions!

The Wii is backwards compatable, which means if you have a Game Cube game and a GC controller, you can play it on the wii. I love easy questions like that! :

Cool beans. Sounds good to me. Try it for a while. You may not have any desire to get the Nyko charger. Whatever works for you.

Hopefully the next star wars game will be a little more life like with specific moves. I wouldn't be surprised if it is. I'll keep you updated on what I hear.

Thanks! I was hoping that the batteries I already own will work ok. Also, thanks for the LSW review. My daughter requested it and I caved and got it for her last week. She and DS will have a ball! (They may have to fight DH for a controller!:rotfl: )

I think LSW is just about a must have, especially for anyone who hasn't play either of the old ones.

I just purchased a Wii, it was an impulse buy but hey everyone is excited about it in my house!

The bundle I bought comes with two wii-motes, 2 nunchucks, wii sports and I also added on mario galaxy. What else should I be looking at to buy? Game-wise I know my household (all adults) would want the old school games, and all the sport games like tennis, golf etc...

I'm completely lost now... the hard part was getting the Wii but now that I have it I'm wondering what else...

Thanks so much!

Welcome!
Did you read the very first post on the thread? That should help you feel a little more comfortable.

Sounds like you have everything you need to play with 2 adults. You'll need more Wiimotes if you want more players.

If you want old school games, you'll probably want a Wii Points card so that you can download games from the Virtual Console (see first post). Wii points cards are sold everywhere and they usually run $19.99-$24.99 for 2000. You should start off with just one unless you find them on sale for less than that. If you find some games to download, you'll want to pick up a classic controller ($19.99). Some games use the wiimote, but the vast majority use the classic.

In order to download you need to have an Internet connection. The easiest way is with a wireless router. (See first post).

As far as other Wii games. There are a bunch in the first post (sorry I'm being redundant!), but if you want sports you'll probably want Madden 08, and maybe Mario Strikers (soccer). Wii Sports includes tennis, boxing, golf, and bowling. So that'll keep you busy for a while.

Make sure you check out the party game recommendations, cuz I think that's what you are looking for.

If I can clarify anything or help with anything else, just let me know!

Thanks so much! I did read the first post and it was helpful!

So a classic controller and wii points... got it! I do have a wireless router because we all have laptops in the house so that should be easy!!

Thanks. Who knew a whim would have me spending $500!

No problem! Anytime.

Since you've got a group of adults like I do, I suggest you consider Guitar Hero. it's by far the one we play the most at parties, even when we have to share.

And just about all of the downloadable games will be one player.

Oh and don't forget you can play Game cube games too. you'll just need to pick up GC controllers if you want to do that.

I am such an idiot - I stepped on our Sports CD - the one that came with the Wii - does anyone know if you can buy it anywhere? Or am I just out of luck?

The guy I got from customer service was no help.

The nintendo customer service guy was not help???? I'm so surprised! Nintendo has GREAT customer service!

I've never seen it sold by itself but I would think you could get it directly from nintendo. I'd call back.

I got to thinking after my post that maybe the Nintendo guy didn't understand what I was asking him. I told him that we had broken our disc and I was trying to find out where I could buy another and he said - "The Wii Sports disc is not sold seperatly - is there anything else I can help you with?"

and I said - Well - I guess not - I was just so sad.

I think I will try again later.

Is this common? We have had our system for about a week or two, and needless to say, it is a hit! However, it seems that only Wii Sports works consistently. When we try to use another game (Wii Play, Carnival) we get the occassional error message and the screen goes to black with a whole bunch of text regarding the error. I know I need to do some research on this, but my hubby thinks the hardware is faulty. Like I said, it seems to error out during a transition. Any suggestions where to start first for troubleshooting?

Thank you, oh wise one!!!

Geetey,

Thank you!! I just bookmarked this site so the next time I get an error - I'll know exactly where to go!

You are wonderful! Thanks so much!!!
