Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

This is so long that I haven't read through all of the posts. I know this has had to have been asked, but I haven't read it yet.

Is it really worth it to buy the warranty for the console/games? Does anyone really do this? Has anyone had any problems and had to return their items? The console would cost another 30 or 40 for a warranty. Is this good for piece of mind? :confused3

Thanks!

Good question!

No, I would not buy an additional warranty for any Nintendo item. They have fantastic customer service and reasonable charges for problems--if any charge at all.

I buy a lot of electronics and this is one item I would definitely not get a warranty for. The most likely issues would be out of the box and Nintendo has you covered there.

Has anyone heard of action replay for the DS? My 8 year old son has been begging for this, but when I went to Game Stop to buy it, they told me lots of people had problems with it, like it froze their game... :scared1:

What exactly is it, what does it do, and does anyone have positive or negative experiences with it?

TIA...

:disrocks:

Been there done that....the action replay for the DS or any system for that matter is basically a hacking device that allows you to "cheat" in your games. in other words things like no death, or unlimited ammo, or the most common use for the ds version Unlocking and catching any pokemon without actually havign to find it and do it the hard way.

with a device like this that basically goes in and rewrites the code for a game there is ALWAYS a chance of it messing up your save file(freezing it or making it unusable)

But when you cheat you deserve what you get (karma you know)..that said I used to use it as a kid(it's been around that long) and only once did I ever have it mess up one of my saved games...and all I had to do was restart from the beginning.

I've never heard of it messing the game up perminately, but I guess it would be possible.

hope this helps

HUGE HUGE HUGE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CONFIRMED::::: GHIII GUITARS WORK WITH ROCKBAND2!!!:::::CONFIRMED

things are starting to change, and along with a huge list of improvements from the original, Rock Band 2 also has some interesting options for gamers, starting with the just-confirmed ability to use Guitar Hero III controllers in Rock Band 2 for Wii. Whether any of the Guitar Hero World Tour instruments will work as well is still unconfirmed, since they aren't out, and thus we can't compare them, but Guitar Hero III's controllers do in fact work, according to MTV Games.

OTHER WII RB2 NEWS

-Here's where things get a bit more serious though. Gamers wanted to know about Rock band 2's Wii efforts in online and downloadable content, and MTV Games looks to be taking tremendous strides in delivering both in a big, big way. Head to head mode is included on Wii, with both local and online options, so if you want to play band vs. band, or go head-to-head with someone on drums or guitar, you can. In addition, World Tour is available for online co-op, and unlike last year's 360/PS3 World Tour offering, you can still play even if members of your band aren't present, having customized computer stand-in characters filling the stage, and allowing you to play with just one or two friends around the globe, rather than calling off the show if one guy can't make it. Good call.

-The new Battle of the Bands mode is also included this year, so every day will bring a new challenge for bands. Players go into Battle of the Bands mode, check out the new challenge that Harmonix has created for the day - this could include playing a song with only expert available, playing with no notes on screen, hitting a specific score or star level, or other in-game modifiers that could add more gameplay into the mix - and match your band's scores with others around the world. Leaderboards and rank can be seen in an in-game stat-tracking system, or players can link it to their RockBand.com profile to check it in real time. This mode is fully in-tact from the 360/PS3 builds of the game.

-And now onto downloadable content. It may be a tricky one, but MTV Games is out to deliver the biggest offering on Wii thus far, as every song available from 360/PS3 will be included for Wii release, and the game will feature the same store system as well, letting you preview video of the track, look at album art, and download directly from in game. In addition, Rock Band 2 is going to update - for Wii users only - all previous downloadable content from Rock Band 1 and put it in the Wii store as well, so for those out there that wanted the game's first DLC tracks but could never get them, Rock Band 2 can facilitate.

-There's a catch though. Titles from the Rock Band 1 disc, and the Rock Band Track Pack won't be available, and there's no way to rip the songs from that game onto Rock Band 2, so unless MTV Games offers those songs online as well - something it doesn't plan to do - your original Rock Band 1 songs are going to stay on the original game only. As with any Wii game, there's also the problem with storage, and it's one Rock Band will need to deal with as well, since the new SD card tech isn't implemented yet (oh Nintendo).

Songs will be pulled from your internal memory on Wii, and additional songs can be purchased in the Rock Band store and saved to your SD card if more space is needed, but you'll need to have any songs you want to play during that play session on your internal Wii memory. So on one hand you've got an extremely ambitious DLC offering from MTV Games - a huge win for Wii fans - and on the other you've got Wii's technical limitations (at least for the time being), which ensure that you'll be cleaning your fridge out constantly if you want to keep updating your list of available DLC.

((This shouldn't be a big problem for most of you...but for the big music freaks you may be running out of internal memory real quick)) hopefuly once nintendo allows the sd card storage solution (coming in a few months) they will patch this and allow you to play them directly off your sd card.

Hope this helps you guys out ((Since so many of you have been asking about GHIV vs RB2))

OK, thanks!

Thanks for this thread!

I just bought my dd 7 a Wii for chirstmas. I was so excited to finally find it. Then I was worried about games and such. But this thread has been a great source of information.

My DD6 bday is coming soon and I was thinking of getting her the new Disney sing-it. I know it has Disney stars singing, but are they the classic Disney songs or the songs from their shows? I've tried to look it up on the website but didn't get any info. Plus, will it come with it's own mic like HSM?

From IGN:
Disney Sing It is a karaoke game that enables friends to compete and sing to current hits from today’s top Disney artists.
General Features

* Thirty-five favorite songs and music videos from hit Disney Channel Original Series and Movies as well as artists from Disney’s Hollywood Records label
* Multiplayer modes including duet, player versus player, and team play that encourage friendly competition and family entertainment
* Vocal exercises designed to teach players how the pros perfect their singing skills

Yes, you can buy it with a mic or without...so be careful to get the one you need.

I just noticed your ticker!! We'll be in WDW at the same time!! :teeth:

Actually I do have a couple of questions.

Do you have any game reccomendations for a 7 year old girl? I have read that some of the games geared towards girls are awful. On her DS she loves the nintendo dogs game.

Also how quickly do the batteries really get eaten up? Should I get a charger? If so do you have one you prefer?

Thanks so much!

I am so excited about this. I feel like a kid in a candy store. I can hardly wait to give it to her. It is soooo hard to wait but, chirstmas is an excellent time because I will just have had surgery and will be laid up for a little while. This will keep dd busy for the first few days!

There's some info about the charger I recommend in the FAQ in the first post. I do recommend getting one. We have the Nyko charger and it's the only one I recommend.

As for girl games, if she likes Nintendogs I suggest Animal Crossing (comes out b4 Christmas) and MySims. Also at 7 she should be able to play Mario Galaxy and all the Lego games which are really fun as well as the party games that are listed in the second post.

My local costco had the rechargeable pack for $21.99 for 2, is that a good deal? Any reason why we may want more than 2? We only have 3 wiimotes so I can't see buying 2 packs of 2.

IGN: Let's say someone wants to clear out their whole system, get the largest SD card Nintendo supports, and just go crazy making their Wii a World Tour machine. Any idea how many total songs (created or purchased) they could cram onto it? Are we talking a few? A couple dozen?

David Nathanielsz: Depending on the size of the SD Card I don't think people will have any trouble storing a whole boatload of songs on their storage device. We're talking way more than dozens. Again, it will depend on the specific songs you download and whether they are long or short, etc., but you should be able to store a very large set of DLC onto a single SD Card.

I cut and pasted that from http://wii.ign.com/articles/922/922820p2.html, I thought that I read the biggest size SD card that nintendo supported was 2G, so why does this Nathanielsz say all that, doesn't he know the max size?

Also has anyone used a PNY SD card, or only San Disk and the Wii branded ones? Will I have any trouble with a non wii branded memory card?

You can use any SD memory card. Just as long as it is not bigger than 2 Gigs. 2 Gigs is huge for the Wii considering it is quadrupple the size of the internal memory the Wii currently has. I use a PNY card bought a 2 pack at Wal-Mart right after i bought my Wii almost 2 years ago for $14.99 don't spend your hard earned cash on the nintendo brand. Heck go on Amazon they I saw 2 gig cards the other week for 30 cents and 2 dollars to ship.

To add to this the average song even for GH or RB is 5 mb. That is 400 songs on a 2 gig card. Are you really going to pay for 400 songs? Someone who has either of these games for Xbox or PS3 can let you know better, but I think it is .99 cents per song? That is $400 of music and there is no way to say that activision or ea will make the songs compatible with whatever the next version of the games are.

As JH says..you will have a TON of room to store songs on a sd card. And 1) They will not have anywhere close to that many songs((I've been downloading Rb songs for a long time on my 360 and I don't have anywhere near that.)) and to correct jH...it isn't $.99 a song...it's $1.99 for most songs a select few are sold for a dollar.(usually those by lesser known bands.)

hope this helps

So I haven't written a review in a while, but it's because I am in the middle of playing The Force Unleashed.

First off let me just say that this game is NOT for kids under 10 years old. You may have the random kid younger than that play, but I doubt it. This game ties in Episode 3 and Episode 4 of the Star Wars series.

The Story begins with you playing as Darth Vader and learning all the controls on Kashyyk, it's the planet that Chewie is from. Playing through this level you learn how to use your lightsaber, pick stuff up and throw it, and choke someone. At the end of this level you fight a Jedi that survived Order 66, you find out that he has a son, after you dispatch of the Jedi you take the son for yourself.

The controls in this game are good not great, everything is very responsive. There are times during the game that you feel like you are just flinging your arms all around. I give the controls an 8 out 10

The graphics in this game are on par with what we expect from the Wii, There are times were you look at this game and go WOW! and times you go man that looks terrible. Cut Scenes in this game are plentiful they add to the story with out them you can't get the point of the story. I give the graphics a 7 out of 10

The sound in this game is great all the great SW songs are back and they are always playing in the background, with some new ones. It is a great soundtrack. The Voice over work is good, they use actual SW characters voices from the movies in the game. I give the sound a 9 out 10.

This is were I give my final score, but with this game I can't give the score on the Controls, Graphics, or Sound. I am rating this game on the story, and for that and that only it gets a 10 out of 10. This stroy turns and moves and is so involved with the SW Universe that you will feel like you are playing another movie.

Thanks for the review. I have an 11yo who desperately wants this one and I was gonna cave but I think I may wait. He's not too good with the violent games, they tend to make him a little crazy.
