Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

My kids are always leaving the wii wireless remotes on because it seems when we try to turn them off it also turns off the game. Sometimes they just want to pause the game for awhile and turn off the remotes while they take a break. This is really causing a problem with burning through batteries.

Is there any way to turn off the wii wireless remotes without turning off the wii itself?

(I would search around for the answer but I've got a stomach bug and can barely sit here and type!)

The Wii-motes go into sleep mode after a few minutes. They will still use some energy, but not too much.

You have a larger issue here though.

Leaving a system on pause for more than a couple of minutes is a really bad idea. 1. It causes screen burn on your TV. If you leave it too long the image that is paused in the game can be seared onto your tv forever. 2. Pausing does not stop the game from running in the Wii, so your Wii is sitting there getting hotter and hotter for not reason.

What possible game are they playing that they can't just save and quit and come back to it later?? Companies make games easy to save so they don't have to hear people complain about the things I mentioned.

Thanks for the question! I hope you are feeling better!

Woo hoo I am the proud new owner of a Wii!!! I am not a gamer and the last time we bought a system was when the original xboxes came out years ago. It finally died right before Xmas and the kids were very sad. Wells the grandparents bought them an XBOX 360 to replace it ( how nice is that lol?) but of course i still dont play it. I have been wanting this Wii since it came out and DH and I didnt buy each other anything for Xmas so we could save money to purchase it. Im looking foward to playing it and im sure ill have a few questions lol.
Ill go back and read the whole thread, and for now i just know to try and hold on to the controller.

I swear that our wii motes do not go to sleep after a few minutes. I've seen them stay on for over an hour I'm sure - with no one touching them (I realize they are sensitive to touch).

I am not sure about the wii games but it seems we have lots of GC games that you have to come to the end of a section in order to save. Turning it off loses the work. So it usually happens when they want to take a short break and come back in an hour or two. They dont want to lose their progress.

Any other way to turn them off? Or is our wii somehow different as it won't go into sleep mode? Can we change that? We do make sure the wii gets turned off generally.

Does anyone have the new game Wario Smooth Moves yet? It looks to be really interactive and fun, but I was hoping someone could give me an opinion on it before I shell out $50 :) Thanks!

We got it the day it came out and it is my favorite game (well....maybe tied with Rayman). It is a great family game because it's as much fun to watch as it is to play---mainly because the person playing looks so silly holding the remotes in all those crazy ways. There's always alot of laughing when we play it!!!

The mini-games are designed so that the remotes (and sometime nunchuks) are held in certain ways which makes it especially different and fun. Our favorite is the "Mohawk" which requires you position the remote on top of your head--and then the mini-games involve you doing squats and things like that. It also has games where you hold the remote like a steering wheel, like handle bars, up-and-down like an umbrella, with both hands in front of you like you're playing tug-of-war, at your hips, etc...

I will warn you though--the first time you play, and the first time you enter each "mini-game area", you cannot skip through the bazaar story lines and cartoon reels--so it gets a bit boring. And, as you earn new mini-games areas, it introduces the different ways to hold the controller one by one and explains them. It will only go through this explanation once--and the explanations are clever and funny--but don't worry, you wont have to sit through these stories and explanations the next time you play in that mini-game area.

If you have a Wii--this one is a must have. It REALLY takes advantage of the Wii technology!!!!

If they are playing GC games your Wiimotes should turn off. No lights should be lite up. As soon as you switch back they will work, there is no lag or different colored lights. If this is a huge problem for you, call Nintendo if the wii motes are still lighting up.

I have a LOT of GC games and I've never had the not able to save problem. Especially for games for kids. they are normally designed to save more often.

If the kids don't want to play long enough to get to a save point (the longest between I've ever gone with any game GC or not is probably an hour) then they shouldn't play the games unless they have enough time. Leaving the any game system on for an hour or two for any reason is a very bad idea. Luckily most newer TVs have burn in reduction, but I honestly believe there is no excuse for leaving the games paused for so long.

I'm sorry I'm not being very positive for you, but I (and DH) grew up in households where we were not allowed to pause our games like you describe. We either saved or we didn't play that game. I guess it was more widely understood that pausing leads to burn in back then.

Ok - I did not read through the entire thread - so I am so sorry if this has already been answered but.......

My son's Wii is glowing a strange blue glow! I have never seen it do that before :confused3 :confused3 and he is not home right now to ask if there is something wrong. So, is something wrong with it? It looks really wierd. It appears to be turned off :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

Any ideas? Is this normal behavior for a Wii? :3dglasses

Thanks!

You have either received a wii message or its the notification that News Channel update is available, if you have WiiConnect24 on.

lol It's being beamed up by aliens!

You have WiiConnect24 turned on (the system is always "on" and connected to the internet) and there is an update for the system. If you Wii is really off the light will be red. When connected to the internet it will be yellow and when updates are available the game slot will glow blue.

If you don't want it to glow or be connected, tell your son to unconnect it. We don't have ours connected all the time because DH is paranoid. But as soon as we turn it on and connect, the updates are there for us to download or whatever.

She is right I am forever paranoid that something bad will happen....My wii is like a child to if somethign happened I don't know what I'd do. I mean it was so hard for me to be without it for the almost 3 weeks my tv wasn't working....
My poor poor wii was neglected..::Runs over and hugs his Wii. Petting th sensor bar::

On a serious note...I just don't like ot leave it connected. It takes more power that way and I am paranoid that somethign will happen.

I just have a question. I am not into games, yet. I have had a lot of fun playing this though. I have six small children so my husband and I are learning and teaching them to play. Our Wii sometimes jams the picture. It just stalls in to middle. Is this normal? Sometimes it will say to eject the game and turn the power off. We can eject the game but the power button will not work. We have to unplug it and start over. Is this normal? Has any one else had this happen? Or is our bad and we need to trade it in. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have not heard this problem at all. Does it usually do it with a certain game or is it all the games? If it is one game then it's probably the game that is faulty. If it's everything, you need to call Nintendo and talk to them about the problem. They have very good customer service.

This is definitely NOT normal, so do something about it now while your warrenty is still good.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

It did it on the Wii Sports, all of the games. It was wierd. Like I would hit the ball in golf and it would not react at first, pause, then play. Like it was delayed. Then my husbands game Call of duty had a blip once. I have not been able to play the last two days due to tax stuff with our bussiness. I hope to try again tomorrow. I think if it does it again I will take it back. Thanks for answering me! :)

Make sure nothing is getting in the way of the sensor bar...that would cause things like this to happen. that said it's not a normal thing I would definately call Nintendo, as the DW said their customer service is amazing!

I had an error setting up my ds online So i went to the web page to see what the error was and within 2 days there was a letter in my mailbox asking if the problem was fixed because they noticed I didn't call to speak with a rep and just wanted to make sure it was ok. Giving me a number to call if I still needed help! It's a little big brother feeling, but they linked the e-mail addy to ourmy nintedo account to get the info.

I have also talked to them onthe phone before very helpful and their warrenty is the best int eh biz if something needs done. Hopefully it's a minor glitch and somethign you can tell you how to fix.

I just had another though...your system isn't set up near other things that give off a lot of infrared light is it??? say candles or in direct sunlight(a window behind you?) the wiimote reads off of the sensor bar it's 2 infrared lights. This is how it know where the screen is, ect. To much infrared could cause delay and hickups!

lastly make sure they games aren't dirty. With all those small kids of yours do you allow them to pull them games in and out of the system? scratches, and finerprints make discs hard to read!
((That wouldn't explain your husbands game call of duty though....unless heput his fingerprints allover the backside of the disc....BTW how is CoD? I've heard some people really like it and others think it's not any good...does your husband like it so far?))

well good luck

Thank you for all the info. The machine is not near a window at all. The kids are not aloud to play without us so I do not think they have touched it. I will check the disk though. My husband puts his up so they are not able to play it. They are young and I am trying to protect them.

I am going to call them to see. I just walked in the door and the kids want to play so I am going to start the game and see what it does. If it does it again I am calling.

My husband loves his new game. He was up to 4am the other day playing. He has not been able to play alot of games so I am not able to do a big compare. Having six babies under the age of 3 (at one point) kinda kept him busy! We also bought a Sonic game but have yet to try it. I really want to get a couple more. Thanks again for all your help and I will let you know how it goes.

7D- keep us informed on how the problem fix is commign along.

I take it your sonic game is a gamcube game seeing as 7 rings isn't out yet.

IN other news....
THQ announced 11 games are in developement for the wii for 07/early 08 launch! Includeing a CarsII (based on on pixars cars. They say Disney feels it can be a great ongoing game franchise), Rattatoulle(sp?) the new pixar movie. Nicktoons, Avitar ,and my favorite WWE wrestling(im a wrestling freak fot hose who don't know)

Also!!! Konami Has announced Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party! You will use a dance pad and the wii mote to make DDR more interactive then ever! The pads will plug in through the cube ports, and in fact you will be able to use the DDR Mario padsfor the wii game! so you can save some cash if you already have it!
It will include a fitness(weight loss) mode for those that wanna use it as excersise.

thats all for now!
