Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

You have to be connected to the internet to receive updates for the wii itself which is what you want. Nintendo also has it now to where if theres an update for the wii, you have to update it before you can even play a game. So yes you should be connected to the internet. Its no hassle at all. Especially if you are wireless. All you have to do is go under the wii system settings, go to the internet and follow the on screen prompts. Takes like a whole minute to set it up. If your not wireless, all you have to do is buy the adapter, plug it into the usb port in the back and go to the wii system settings and to the internet and follow the on screen prompts. Oh and you also have to be connected to the internet if you ever wanna play online (example - mario kart) and if you wanna download any extra channels in the wii ware section of the wii shop channel.

Yep.

Think of the Wii as a computer that needs software updates (cuz that's what it is).

But unless I'm mistaken those updates come with new games too. SO you don't HAVE to be connected. Like when we got Mario Kart there was a system update that loaded as soon as we put the game in. The system said we had already received the update, so we were good. But you didn't HAVE to download it if you weren't connected online--it was on the game disk. Nintendo understands that many families don't have the desire to be online with the system, so they don't make you do anything.

Just the other day I popped in a older game, cant think of what game I had in right now, but as soon as I popped it in, it made me update the system before I could even play the game. Same thing happened to me for both wii fit and mario kart. It made me update the system as soon as I popped the game in and I HAD to connect to the internet. My sister and her family has the Wii also and just bought Mario Kart. They dont have a wireless internet or cable. They have dial up. They could play the game (not sure if it installed any updates or not) but when they brought their wii over for updates, there was A LOT of updates. So while it may install some updates, it doesnt install ALL updates.

Overall, its just best to connect the wii to the internet for updates. If they dont want to download games, they dont have to. Thats up to them. Its getting to the point now where we dont have many channels open, so we are gonna have to start to delete some games soon and just redownload them whenever we wanna play it.

I just had an idea...not sure if anyone has talked about it before. Has anyone ever started a game exchange? I have a game that I am through with and I would like to trade it for something else. I know I could go to my local game store, but it seems like they don't give you much for your game, plus you have to spend it there. I could sell it on half.com, but I thought I would bring it up here to see if anyone is interested. The game I have is Resident Evil 4 (not exactly little kid friendly, but my Dbf loved it). I would like to trade it for Mario Party 8, Super Paper Mario, or Zelda Twilight Princess, or Super Mario Galaxy.

I have a GameFly account its awesome!! They started accepting trade-ins too! But your idea does sound cool

I never said games have all the available updates. I just know they have some updates.

The bottom line is that no one has to have their Wii connected to the Internet in any way, but that most of us think it is a good idea and worth setting up.

And as for not having enough channels--whoever decided against having a bigger memory for the system should be shot. :goodvibes

I think it might be against the board rules to do this on the dis. I don't know why--it might not be. If you want to do it, I would start a new thread, because it'll get muddled over here.

Good idea.
(I already have RE4, so sorry):thumbsup2

Dont know if you know this or not, but according to Nintendo they are supposed to be fixing the "memory issue". Meaning in other words, Nintendo will be bringing out a hard drive to hook it up, to the Wii or they might do an update as to where you can access your save files from the SD card.

I'd love this idea. We have Smooth Moves and my kids never loved it and I'd trade it for anything for girls.

I had heard talk of this. Actually I remember talk of this when the system launched. It just bugs me that they didn't just do it to start, but I know that would drive up the system price, which could have effected the amazing system sales.

Anyway, thanks for the info! :thumbsup2

I think if they charged $300 for the wii and included like a 60GB hard drive PLUS an SD card slot which they did include as we know, I think the sales would have been just as good. People want SPACE and LOTS of it! If they knew it came with a hard drive plus and SD card slot, it would still of sold out and probably will still be selling out. It would have only been $50 more and people pay that for a game alone. Either that or what they could have done is did the Wii like they did but also came out with a portable hard drive that could plug in the back of the wii in one of the USB ports along with the wii on launch day. That way if people wanted more space they could buy the hard drive if they wanted to.

ITA! :thumbsup2

I guess instead they've given us time to fill it all up and now they can release the added memory. But they better do it soon, because I know a lot of people that are close to or over the memory capacity.

Hi, My children have been working on earning a Wii (prepurchased). :stir: I made sure they had enough points to earn the Wii unit (no games yet) so I could get the Wii Fit.
However, I am trying to get ready for when they earn the games. If a game says up to 4 players and needs a nunchuk- do I need 4 nunchuks? :confused3
I have two remotes and 1 nunchuk but was going to order 2 remote/nunchuk combo packs from costco.
Thank you for your help.:lovestruc

This would have never happened tor $300!!!!! While the cost for us to go buy a HD and put it into a computer from a store is cheap...you will notice that the game companies charge an extreme amount for a little bit of space. This is my the 360 and the PS3 were SO much mroe expensive...the size hard drives they have do not equate to the extra cost. (I'm not talking about the graphics cost either...just what the technically chareg for the storage)

As for a Harddrive...My guess is well see it for the first time on July15th at E3!

As for Sd card support...never gonna happen....to easy to pirate games/ect if you allow this....don't believe me??? google DS/PSP game downloads/roms.

Also it really does make stupid business sense to put the hard drive in the "casual" friendly system. One of the big selling points of the wii at the start was it's low cost compaired to the other two systems. Not to mention while"old school" or "hardcore" gamers may be filling up thier system memories, most casual gamers have a good 75%+ left. Selling a ADD ON harddrive will net the big N ton's more cash...heck, I'll probably buy one and I'm still far form filling my space up(((I still have me NES/SNES/N64 all sitting here with a all my games...no need to download any of them)))

SOme games yes and some no....it should show you on the back of the box(along the top) if it shows a nunchuck pic and a #4 then yes...other wise you shouldn't need 4....I have 2 and I barely use them both....espically havign the gamecube controllers...I just use 2 of them with 4 player smash brothers.

Um actually your wrong. When the PS3 came out the blu-ray players were around $800 - $1000. Main reason why the 60GB PS3 was $700 was because of the blu-ray player. NOT because of the hard drive space. At Best Buy you can now get a 120 GB AND 160GB for $100. So that $50 for a 60 GB isnt farfetched at all!

Whew. Calm down honey. No reason to get all out of shape. It's all good.

Who cares what they could've done, I just want to see what they will do next. :thumbsup2

:lmao: Really! I had to re-read his entire post a couple times to actually make sense of it as he would put like my 360 instead of why and mispelling words! I was all dizzy after reading his post!

That's why I made him put the backspace gif in his signature, he's horrible at that stuff.:thumbsup2

Hope everyone's having a good weekend.

Um Actually I am not "wrong"...Yes the blu ray player was a huge cost factor...but What I was attempting to say was that the companies Like MS and Sony are OVER chargeing us for the use of a harddrive. While as you pointed out a decient size harddrive is avaliable for rather cheap to us consumers for our pc's...the video game companies are over chargeing for a hard drive. They don't add $50 buck for a 60 gig...they are adding between $100 and 150...which as you know is way over priced for that size hard drive.

Examples of my point(im pulling the cost off of amazon for easy referance)

The x-box 360 arcade version (no hard drive) is priced at $279.99
The Pro bundle(20gig harddrive) $349.99
equates to a price difference of around $70 for 20gigs!!!! Not $50 for 60gigs...and thats at their new cheaper prices...at launch the cost was $100 difference.

Add in the 360 Eliete at $449.99 (right now--again not taking into account it's price drop) for a 120 gig hard drive... and your paying a $100 for 100 more gigs!!! which is outrageously proffitable for Microsoft seeing I can buy a 500gb harddrive off of amazon for a little over $100!!!!

Not to mention MS charges around $90 for the 20gig harddrive seperate and $180 for the 120...which makes the cost per gig even greater!!!

The 40gb Ps3 Amazon price is listed at $399...the OLD 80Gb Version is $598 from other sellers....thats a $200 difference!(for40gb) The 60 gb version was also...$559

ON game stop the difference between a used 40gb and a 60gb is $100!!!
that's $100 for 20 gb!!!!! It has nothing to do with bluray....it is a company chargeing way to much per GB!

Looking at PC world's charts the average cost per Gb for a PC harddrive is between 30 and 60 Cents!!

Huge difference between that and what the videogame makers are chargeing us.

While it's ture the cost of a blue ray player was expensive at the time...rememebr sony was LOSEING hundreds of dollars per ps3 for that reason. A huge part of the oringal ps3 launch cost was also due to the fact the first systems also hand the PS2 chip set embedded in them...something that added between $150 and $200 to the cost of making the system...and something which current models do not have.

Basically my whole point has been IF Nintendo had put a Hd in the wii they would surely have followed suite and charged us $100+ for a small harddrive...I'd rather have that as an option rather then something I have to pay them for.

Sorry if I sounded nasty in my original post on the subject, or even in this one...fact is I know what I'm talking about...and I know I am not wrong.

If a word ends in e you almost always drop the e when you add -ing.

Otherwise I think you were pretty clear this time dear.

Teresa--there's no use talking to him when he "knows [he's] not wrong." Trust me. ;)

Remember Justin, the people on these boards are not mean spiritied fan boys that you need to argue with. :teeth:

Anyway, can we get back to the Wii?

I haven't played mine at all in like forever except one little round of Mario Kart. I need me some new games--preferably RPGs!

I'm actually enjoying my Wii Fit, as much as you can enjoy being tortured by Yoga and made a fool of by simple balance exercises. :thumbsup2 I will probably get back to Mario Kart. I never even finished my first round of races before I moved on to the Wii Fit. If you find any good RPG's, let me know.
