Great run this morning even though it was already 82 degrees at 6 am. Originally planning 7, but a few wrong turns later and we ended up going close to 9 instead. Farthest I've gone in a single run. :cool1: Felt good afterward and feel like that half-marathon in November is definitely within reach. Then on to Disney in January and the marathon!!

Got out at 7:15 for a 5 mile run this morning. Mostly cloudy which helped, but 80° and 70% humidity which did not. Was happy with my pace, but needed a lot of fluids afterward. I am one of those types that sweats profusely and my clothes wouldnt have been wetter if I jumped in a pool. Can't wait for cooler weather!

Now I'm REALLY inspired. 1st American to medal (silver) in the Olympic 10,000 meters since Billy Mills.

Sweet!

:thumbsup2

Seriously awesome! I have replayed it multiple times!!

DH just shaved 12 Minutes off of his personal best in a 10K event. 80 Degrees when we finished and 90% humidity, a little hilly the about the same as of 25 flights of stairs.

Way to go USA in the 10,000 Meters.

I did a very humid 10 miles this morning but felt great!

I know it's cheesy but I submitted 2 pictures for the runDisney "Let the Memories Begin" thing and they are both posted! One is a picture of me during the 2011 half marathon (my 1st race ever!) and the other is of my youngest child (he was 3 at the time) after the kids races. He's wearing Mickey Mouse ears, his "medal" for finishing the 100m, and his racing bib. It's fun to see the pictures!

He's so cute! I "liked" his pic. :)

Okay... just a quick note tonight... the whole race report will have to wait until tomorrow as I have a 6 am conference call for work tomorrow, so I'm not going to sit up tonight to write the full report.

I did it, but boy was it hard.

Conditions were rough, and I went out WAAAAYYYYY too fast... it made the finish really tough and I came nowhere near my original goal of 2 hours, and didn't even make my mid-race re-evaluated goal of 2:10. But I finished... in 2:13:16.

I was last in my age/gender group (59/59), 714 of 721 men overall, and 1223 of 1245 total entrants.

It was HOT (84 degrees) HUMID (about 92%) and bright, strong sunshine at race start time (5:30PM) and the end of the race, it was STILL 80 degrees, but of course the sun was almost down at 7:45PM, so that helped a bit. To add to the conditions, there was a 10-12 mile per hour sustained wind that was right in our face for fully half of the 10 miles... that really didn't help.

Details will be in the post tomorrow, but I'm still proud and feel pretty good two hours after finishing, considering what a totally hard race it was.

Thanks for all the well wishes and support. I thought about you folks here to help me get through the last two miles.

Check back tomorrow for the full story and a couple of pictures and videos.

Good night.

Ted

I just wanted to pop in to the thread to say hi and (re)introduce myself.

I'm Kristen and I'll be running in the half this January. :wave2:

I posted on the WISH boards a few years ago and then fell out of running. I'm back now and getting motivated to not just finish this race but finish it well!

My DH -- kzmarathon -- will be posting here also. We look forward to getting to know you all!

Kristen

My name is Kevin and I haven't posted on the boards for several years, but am excited to be back! Kristen and I will be running the WDW Half this January and want to get to know our WISH team once again. Good luck in your training!

I have signed up for the Goofey Challenge. Never ran a full marathon before. I realize this is insanity and I know at the end of the day I do not have to go through with it if I cannot.

I have done a few half's. I actually began running (jogging, speed walking really) this year after nearly 30 years (since h.s.)

My last half I did in just about 2.30.

Good for you and go for it. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2.

At 60.5yo and never having done a marathon, only one 1/2 marathon, I slow walked the 2011 WDW 5K and the 1/2 marathon then speed walked the full. Not being able to even jog I just trained to speed walk. Finished the Mickey in 4:56:28 and later that year speed walked a half marathon in 2:11:12.

Now at 62 I just started my triathlon racing which has had a side benefit of strengthening my knees allowing me to start jogging and even running a bit. 2013 will be my third Goofy.

Not sure how marathon weekend varies from the Princess, but I think the course is pretty similar, so this may work. This year for the Princess, DH drove to the TTC around 6:30ish, I think by then they were directing traffic to the TTC. He went to MK (but didn't stick around long enough to see me :( ) then he took the monorail back to Epcot to the finish. My mom was staying with the kids and they took a resort bus to Epcot and saw me as we went into Epcot through a backstage enterance. They were the only ones I saw. DH said he saw me cross the finish line but I didn't see him. A sign of some sort or flag would be great to help the runners find their spectarors.

Thanks Colleen! This is helpful.

Reep - thanks for the continued feedback.

I'm hoping to make it all work out and let the fam get as mug zzz's as possible.

You are welcome. Just be prepared they may not see you. In 2010 I finished top 100 with nobody within 20 seconds of me at the finish in a blaze orange singlet and my family still did not seem me finish. Go figure.

2010? They were probably too busy shivering and trying to stay warm!:rotfl2:

Did you follow a training plan to speed walk? I'm trying to work on increasing my speed.

I read some books and reviewed some training schedules and decided the routines weren't for me. The greatest impact for me came from reading Chi Walking by Danny Dreyer. His method was basically what I was naturally doing so I just modified my form a bit and worked on perfecting my efficiency. I used my new speed walking technique for the 8.3 mile portion of Disney's first W&D and finished with a 9:36mm pace good enough to place me in corral B for the 2011 Donald and corral C for the 2011 Mickey. My fastest walking mile or as Galloway calls it, Magic Mile, has been 8:16.

Let me just say that my methods were fine for me because I had a good bicycling base and was able to use that in my walking. The 10% increase per week maximum for mileage did not concern me because of my base and I found it easy to go from 6 miles to 10 miles within a week with no injury issue.

I find speed walking to be lots of fun and get a huge thrill when I kick it into overdrive to pass some runners who are in my way and my 910XT Garmin shows a 7:00mm pace or faster for the short sprint distance. :lmao:
