Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread

I read some books and reviewed some training schedules and decided the routines weren't for me. The greatest impact for me came from reading Chi Walking by Danny Dreyer. His method was basically what I was naturally doing so I just modified my form a bit and worked on perfecting my efficiency. I used my new speed walking technique for the 8.3 mile portion of Disney's first W&D and finished with a 9:36mm pace good enough to place me in corral B for the 2011 Donald and corral C for the 2011 Mickey. My fastest walking mile or as Galloway calls it, Magic Mile, has been 8:16.

Let me just say that my methods were fine for me because I had a good bicycling base and was able to use that in my walking. The 10% increase per week maximum for mileage did not concern me because of my base and I found it easy to go from 6 miles to 10 miles within a week with no injury issue.

I find speed walking to be lots of fun and get a huge thrill when I kick it into overdrive to pass some runners who are in my way and my 910XT Garmin shows a 7:00mm pace or faster for the short sprint distance. :lmao:

Wow!! thanks so much for the info, I'm going to check it out:)

I will be doing my first marathon and first disney run in January, I have a question about the pictures. . apologies if this has already been discussed but I couldn't find anything about it  I'll be doing the marathon solo so no personal picture taker, does Disney or a third party company offer any kind of picture packages for the pictures with the characters along the course track? I thought I remembered someone telling me about a set price for digital downloads of all the pics tagged with your bib number? Thanks a bunch for any help and I can't wait to run Disney! :)

They do have picture takers on the course, but not with characters IIRC. Many bring small cameras in fanny packs for pictures along the way.

The only picture at the PHM that Brightroom took was the one with Jack Sparrow. At the other characters, I just paused my run on runkeeper and passed my iPhone off to the handler to take the picture.

In case you haven't seen, you can already buy Marathon weekend stuff from the Disney Store! http://www.disneystore.com/rundisney/mn/1000855/

I wonder if the same things will be at the expo. I'm all for buying things at the expo so you can get what you want before sizes run out, but I have hardly started training! I take that back, I HAVEN'T started training :rolleyes1 At least they don't have the 'I did it' shirts online yet :rotfl:

As the Reep said, the brightroom photographers don't show up near the characters very much. I'm go with PRmamiDEdos on this one - take your phone or a small point-and-shoot camera with you on the course (I prefer the point-and-shoot, as my phone camera is crappy). It would really, REALLY suck to get to a character you really want a picture with and not have the ability to get it (i.e. if you don't have a camera and there's no brightroom photographer there).

Each character will most likely have 2 handlers - one taking the current picture and the other getting the next runner's camera ready. It's a really quick and easy process. Plus, having your own camera gives you the ability to get pictures you otherwise wouldn't get from the official race photographers. One of my favorites from when I ran the 2011 Princess Half is of the sun coming up over the entrance to Tomorrowland as we ran through. I'm so glad I had my camera and was able to get that one! :thumbsup2

I screen capped all my 2012 Chip & Dale Relay photos from Brightroom. Here they are. Some are character shots, most are course shots. There were also characters without Brightroom photographers as the others have said.

If you bring your own camera (or phone with a decent camera) you won't be disappointed that there wasn't a Brightroom photographer there. Nor will you need to pay the ~$100 for the photo CD.

The Chip & Dale was taken before my leg of the race. Scrooge and Pluto were post finish.

That's funny. I never knew they took that many pictures with characters on the course. I raced the marathon twice, but had specific time goals so I guess either the characters weren't out that early in the race or I was just too focused to notice them.

Surely that is not the official race shirt? I was hoping for a long-sleeve one. I am one of those who is superstitious about wearing anything race-related until I have crossed the finish line. I felt like I was jinxing myself when I bought the I Did It shirt for the princess half the day before the race! :sad2:

Marathon training ramping up (NYC). Did 17 yesterday and am pretty disappointed with how things went. For some reason my mid-week speed and tempo runs are going okay, but the long ones are really bad. Not able to really maintain pace--and these are paces that I have done in the fairly recent past. May need to to adjust my race expectations if this keeps going.

How much slower than race pace are you doing your long runs? What is your weekly mileage?

Ok Disers....help me decide once and for all! DH and I cannot decide if we want to do the Donald in 2013 and the Mickey in 2014, or just do Mickey in 2013 since it's the 20th anniversary. A little background: Just over 2 years ago (I am 35 now), I was fat and completely out of shape! I decided one day that enough was enough and just got in shape! I lost almost 70 lbs and have been working out at least 6 days/week since then. We have done multiple programs like Insanity, P90X, etc..and then a little over a year ago, we started running. Since then, we have done several mud runs (Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, Warrior Dash), multiple 5Ks and 10Ks, and 2 1/2 Marathons. My 1/2 goal has been 1:45, but I haven't made it. First race was the Chip and Dale, and I really think I could have done it but I had some unfortunate gi issues and spent quite a bit of time in the porta-potty :lmao: Anyway, finished in 2:01. Second race was the Mini in Indianapolis, with 35,000 runners, which really crowded the course. Add to that the extremely warm temps and I gave up my goal before mile 5...finished in 1:57. So, what I can't decide is...do I go for my goal of 1:45 with the Donald or do I just bite the bullet and run my first full :confused3

My biggest concern with the full is not finishing, it's just my uber-competitive nature and the fact that if I do a full, I want to do it well...you know?

Both would be great for you, so it comes down to what you want. If you are looking for increasing your performance, then I would run the Duck this year and wait on the marathon. I think more people should run halfs and then just toss in the full once in a while.

However, completing your first full is very surreal and the party at mile 20 in this year's race will only help that. I wouldn't worry about finishing. If you train properly, you will finish. Maybe not fast, but you will make it.

I guess if it were me, I would probably go ahead and run the full if I could commit to training for it. This year will be a big party. Then after the full you can go back to running halfs and work on improving your form and hitting your goal. Once you get below 1:45 then you might want to try a full again and improve that time.

Thanks Reep! I think we can definitely commit the time, we will just cut back on our other workouts!

My plan requires specific long run paces--this week MP+ 45 sec. I've done this plan twice before. Just need to not overthink things. And remind myself that this is what training is all about.
