Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread

Ever accidentally run more than the training plan called for? We had a 3.5 mile last night. I should mention we had weekend company and had missed two prior training runs. We headed out on a new trail, and checked the mileage we did in the car afterwards. We did over 4 miles, unplanned. And on pace. Whew! I had sore jello legs at the end, but was pretty proud of our "mistake". I guess we just jumped up a week on our training. :)

That is great and it shows you just how much fun an unplanned exercise period can be. Can be very helpful when you listen to your body and just carefully go with the flow.

Not really a "training plan" type of guy, rather a "need to do this today" type.

eg. Saturday, while watching the Olympic bicycle road race I decided to go out for my exercise and knew how much time was left before the end. Went out for a 10K but when I got to 4 miles I just needed to do more. Did 14 miles, missed the end of the race but it sure did feel good. Yesterday did a 101 mile bicycle ride.

Like I mentioned, not a "training plan" type of guy and I think I am better because of it. I let my body tell me what to do as I am going along.

Note, having the required base mileage before going real long is an absolute must. Build up the base and the fun can begin with minimal concerns regarding injury.

Good luck with your continued training and races.

You'd be surprised at how long thirsty runners can go. After we made it all the way around, we went back to England for more beer and the fireworks. :)

I like the pacing John, from 11 AM to 9 PM for the fireworks. A full 10 hours of drinking!

I am going to have to train for that as hard as I do for the Goofy.

Thank you for your opinion. I am looking for ways to support and encourage him.

Not sure the goal is reasonable, but the best way to encourage him is just to make sure he has time to get all the speed training and mileage he will need. To get to that level requires a lot of sacrifice and you will have to pick up the slack.

I have a feeling by the time I get to 20 anything short of zombie Walt Disney raised from his cryogenic chamber will not appease me, but that's just me...

I'm hoping at mile 20 they surprise us with an extension to the monorail and that's how we get back to Epcot!!:thumbsup2:lmao:

So glad i got caught up on this thread today. Got back from vacation this week and only ran twice, meaning i skipped 2 training runs last week including a 9miler.

Needed some inspiration to get back into my training. Should i just pick up with my training plan or try to make up for what i missed by altering my long run this week?

Usually I just jump right back in where I left off. Even if it means you struggle for a week, you will still catch up fairly fast. I didn't run for 2 weeks. 2 whole weeks! One week of which included vacation too, so I know what you mean. But I jumped right back into my training program anyway, and did just fine. I've got a 7 miler coming up this Saturday and will just do the best I can.

Don't try to make up for missed miles. That will only increase your risk for injury. Life is going to happen and even the best training plans will need to be altered. Just pick up with where you should be at this point and don't look back. ;)

Training has been going well and I am starting to get excited!
Word of advice, please.
I am scheduled to run 6 on Saturday and 12 on Sunday but I am going out of town to visit my BFF. Her neighborhood is in the middle of nowhere and the main road has no shoulder so I need to stay in the boundaries of her 'hood which is around 3 miles of road total. There is a group run about 20 min from her house that leaves at 6:30 on Sunday but I need to be back by 8:30 at the latest so I can't get 12 in. I am thinking maybe run the 6 in her 'hood Saturday morning and then try to run around 10 on Sunday with the group. Is this enough or should I try to run 2 on my own before the group leaves (keeping in mind I do not know the area near the group run AT ALL).
Or should I just run for an hour each morning on my own in her neighborhood and not worry about the miles.
TIA!

Can you run the 12 miler on Saturday (4 x 3-mile loop)? Then Sunday you can run a slow 6-8 miles as a recovery run.

Does the marathon have a halfway there song like the Princess Half Marathon? If they do, at what point do they start the voting for it?

I have a friend who is running her first half in January. She is a nurse and spends a large amount of time on her feet and now with her training has just been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. I think it's her shoes but she says she loves them. What can she do?

I don't think so. I don't remember any voting or anything super special at the halfway point.

Must get the inflammation down. Could be the shoes, could be building to fast. Freeze a water bottle and have her roll her foot/heal hard over it often to ice it and massage the fascia. Probably some NSAIDs would help too. Some try local (ben-gay) with success. I just used ice when it first started to appear and it went away quickly.

Training for DATW is much more fun than training for Goofy :)

Perhaps a DisBoard training team is in order.

4 miles of hills today (bridge work actually since there are no hills here)...have been severely lacking motivation. So glad the Olympic running events start today! What better place for inspiration

It's hard when your race is a ways away. I have the Disneyland Half coming up so I'm already obsessing about that. I think I set a personal record for how many times I reviewed the course with a month to go.

6 mile easy run this morning; 17-mile decreasing pace run tomorrow.
