Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread

Coach Charles (or anyone else), I have a question for you:

"How much of your fitness do you lose in the weeks following a Full Marathon?"

I ran the Chicago Marathon on Oct 7th. The first week afterwards I put in 7 miles (one 3 mile walk, one 4.3 mile run) and mostly just rested. The second week, I ran 15.3 miles. Last week, I ran 23.5 miles (I did my usual speed work, easy run, and tempo run followed by a Long Run on the weekend). Everything feels good, no pain or anything.

In those three weeks after the marathon, do you lose that much marathon level fitness because you have reduced your weekly mileage below the 'peak' pre-marathon mileage weeks (30-25 miles/week)?

I am running a Half Marathon on Saturday, and while I am not at all worried about being able to finish, I am just curious about your experience with post-Marathon recovery/fitness when working towards the 'next' race (in my case Goofy).

Where is everyone eating on Sunday after the marathon? I finally got my coveted 'Ohana ADR at 5:20 that day. Can't wait to fill up on protein!

No ADRs for us. Not sure what or when we will be eating. I may be already asleep by the time it is officially dinnertime. :rotfl:

Rick, you don't lose much fitness at all. What you do lose is endurance. Your muscles, joints, etc., are generally pretty beat up at the end of marathon and need plenty of time to recover. With a few weeks of rest and easy running, I've been able to do four fulls and one ultra in a 3.5 month period. The key is to take it easy after each one and don't expect a PR every time out. I think most people can only go seriously hard racing a few times a year. Doing many races close together is more for the fun of it than trying to make each one the best ever.

I am definitely not worried about 'time' from this point forward. I just want to finish with a smile on my face. :)

This is good to know. I have been resting and taking it easy. The legs feel good right now (just ran 4.25 miles with no problems). This upcoming Half will be a good gauge of how well my rest and recovery was these past 3 weeks. What I learn from this will inform my plans for early 2013 when I plan to run 3 Fulls in 3 months. Crazy, I know. :)

I ran the 5k at WDW in January last year and progressively increased my runs with a local 10 miler in May and then my first 1/2 marathon last weekend. I was looking at the PHM and then an opportunity came up to run the 1/2 during MW. I am ecstatic!! :yay:

Now I'm just hoping the holidays and winter don't throw me off track!

We'll be eating back at our motor home in FW, same as the last 2 Dopey Weekends. Most likely some home-made vegetable soup.

John, you are really starting to sell me on mobile homes! I have seen them at other races before and always thought how convenient they must be.

Yes, that is crazy! But I have admiration for you and others two are putting in a lot of miles and doing a lot of races. I would love to run more but I still need to watch the miles as I am injury prone. Because of some family situations that have come up this year too, it has made it even more difficult to get out there and run.

Recently I have debated whether or not the Galloway three day a week running program was going to be enough training to get me through this marathon. I decided to stick with the plan, however. I only have four more long walk/runs to go. 15, 17, 20, and 20. Decided that I'm NOT going up to 26 miles as his plans call for. These four long runs will have to be enough! Trying to fill in the gaps with a little more cross training though.

I did my prep for the Chicago marathon with three weekly runs (speed work, easy run, tempo run/hill work) and a weekend Long Run. That worked for me. And I only ran one 20-miler before tapering down. When I trained for my first Half at WDW back in January, I followed the Galloway plan of Tue, Thurs, & Sat runs (with Tuesdays being either Speed work or Hill Work) and it worked fine for me. (I did not do the Magic Miles though, and I ran rather than the Run/Walk strategy.)

Pick a plan that works for you and stick to it, making adjustments as necessary to accommodate 'your life'. As long as you are putting in the miles and the 'foot time', you will be fine. Someone told me that it is better to go into a race a bit undertrained yet healthy, than to overtrain and get injured. So I think you are being very wise to lay out your weekly runs in a way that reduces your chances for injury. Oh, and don't forget to have fun! :)

Not that crazy, and not hard to do if you are smart about it. I ran 3 in 6 weeks last year, and as long as you recover well and then do some decent long runs in between, you'll be fine.

We ran 8 miles (Galloway, and max distance to date) on Sunday and my shins (more towards the inside of my legs) are still on the sore side. They feel tight when I'm still but okay when I'm moving. Haven't headed out for any short runs this week yet--thought I should baby them a bit. We have a 5k on Saturday. Should I continue to baby them or try a 30 min run this evening?

I had that problem not too long ago. Ice your shins and do a good shin stretch.

We are eating at Akershus that day, and Chef Mickey for brekky on Monday.
Jersey Shore has no power since Monday night, it is slowly coming back on, hoping for power soon! Got 2 short runs in this week with nothing much else to do!

We're doin the half, not the full, and we plan to indulge in some Flame Tree onion rings for lunch, and then Tusker House buffet for dinner. Have only done breakfast at TH, so hoping we like dinner!

Costumes anyone? Who is dressing up? I did the princess half and it was so fun because of all the costumes. The video for the full marathon doesn't seem to show a lot of costume.

I think it would be more fun to dress up but don't want to be the only one.

What are you guys doing?

No costumes for me, I'll be running in some tried and true running clothes. Not trying anything new on race day, but hey that's just me! I'm sure there will be some in costumes but not as many as in the half's.

I'm sure there will be tons of costumes on the course. I'll be in a running outfit resembling Stitch.

I'm going to wear a Minnie Mouse Sparkle skirt with a black tech shirt. I'm going to attach a Minnie Mouse embroidered patch on the front of the shirt. Add a Minnie Mouse pony-tail holder that I bought at WDW last year and I'm all set!:thumbsup2

The 18/55 plan has the first 20 mile run tomorrow, any others on the plan and have tired legs after the long run on Weds?
