In the immortal words of Bobo the Bear in "Muppets in Space"...."Baby steps, sir, baby steps."

Today I ran 1 mile. It is the first run since August 20, when I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in my foot. I will now begin the long (but shortened) process of building back up my endurance so that I can finish Goofy in, what, 10 weeks?

Should be an interesting ride!

:yay: :yay: :yay:

That's great news! Hopefully things will continue to improve from here...slow and steady wins the race. Congrats!

Well, in the "not the smartest thing I've ever done" category, my dh and I decided to get new road bikes this weekend. We've been talking about it for awhile because we'd like to get into some triathalons after the marathon in January. I've never really done any cycling to speak of, so we went out riding yesterday for 10 miles. My first time clipping in and, of course, I fell over at one point when trying to unclip. Problem is I really messed up the back of my ankle during the fall. Caught it in the chain ring I think since I have two pretty deep cuts. It's ridiculously sore today and swollen in the back. Just from the trauma of the cuts I think and they keep bleeding since any walking basically keeps them open. I applied some steri strips to them a short time ago hoping that would get the bleeding to stop. :(

My local half-marathon is on Sunday, so send me some good thoughts that it heals up by then and I'm back in running shape.

Congrats on getting back out there...even for a mile! I wish you the best in the next 10 weeks...omg...it's only 10 weeks!!

Sorry to hear that! I will think healing thoughts for you! In another not the smartest thing moment, I ran the Midwest Spartan Super this weekend (8 mile obstacle course) and am still so sore I can barely walk, let along run. I have my local 1/2 in 2 weeks so hopefully, it won't put me too far behind!

Bummer, but at least it is a relatively short term injury. Good wishes, and success in your next race.

I had to do my run on the treadmill today because of Hurricane Sandy. I haven't been on it since March, and it was so terrible! I only had to do 4 miles and I was so tired after a half a mile! I was more exhausted than the 14 miles I did on Saturday. I think tomorrow I will run in the rain - it was that bad!

Maura-

I hope the rest of your training goes well and you can salvage what you can. Hope the foot feels fine!

I am excited to be doing my first full on the day after my 40th birthday in Disney! I'm a relatively new runner (started with C25K in August 2010) with 8 races (3 5K, 2 10K, 1 half, and the Bourbon Chase) under my belt. I am running the Savannah Rock N Roll half this Saturday, then a Thanksgiving 5K as my last "race" before the marathon. I'm doing the Hal Higdon marathon training program and feel good about my progress so far. I am going slow and steady with a goal of completing it in enough time to enjoy the race, but not pushing myself so hard that I can't enjoy the rest of my trip. I have been contemplating costumes and I think I'm going with a tech-based Mary Poppins Jolly Holiday look (white tech top with added "ruffles" and a red bow at the neckline, a red tech "corset", white tech capris/tights white tulle skirt with little red bows, and a white tulle bow and little red flowers on a white runner's cap). Even though the race weekend is my "birthday party", it looks like right now I'm travelling down by myself, so looking forward to meeting some friends to hang out with while I am there.

What a great way to spend your birthday. The costume sounds great. Make sure and post pictures as you get it together. Your shoes do match the costume, right? ;)

Many of us are traveling by ourselves, so I'm sure you won't have a shortage of people to chat or hang with.

This hurricane is messing up my training! Think if I went out and ran with the wind, I might make my time faster? LOL

Yea, me, too. I don't have the option of a treadmill. The wind is coming from all directions, so I doubt that would be helpful now.

yes and no, yes and no, yes and no.

Some of the strangest runs I have ever done have been on cruise ships. One direction you are flying with a tail wind, the other you are pushing hard against a head wind.

I call it the "DREAD-MILL":rotfl: I don't know why it is so awful and when I first started running that was the only place I would run. It seems so hard on my knees as well. Makes you appreciate the outdoors!

I am thinking of opting for the dreadmill in the morning!! It is supposed to be 40 (which is fine), raining (also fine), and 30-35 mph winds (not so fine). Add to that I have to run between 4-5 AM....not the safest thing to do!

Yeah...being impaled by a flying object wouldn't be an optimal start to a morning! I am amazed at how far reaching this thing is; it is pouring down here in NC. I calling tomorrow a day of rest if it is still raining.

I am up in Montreal and have the same forecast... About 50 with rain and winds from Sandy. Also opting for the m as I do not want to slip and hurt my back with all the wet leaves.

Be safe everyone!

The wind and rained has died down here in NC but I'm praying for you guys in NJ, NY, Ohio, PA , DC...etc...I hope all is well there and I am assuming some of you may have lost power. :grouphug:

I was the same! I trained for my first half nearly exclusively on the treadmill. Now I find it so much easier and enjoyable to run or walk outdoors!

No power. Stuck home with the kids and slowly going crazy.
