Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread

Tried for 9 today and due to chafing, getting very overheated early, over-hydrating and eating too soon before the run, I was only able to do 2.5 miles.

Now I'm really worried a marathon just isn't something I'll be able to do. Anyone who has ever felt like this have an advice?

Yep, this was close to my experience yesterday. Wish I could say it was hot, but it was in the 60s. My legs pretty much died at mile 6ish. I adjusted my route and ran home to get some water. I could feel that I was dehydrated. I went back out and did about another mile and a half and felt ok physically but mentally I was pretty bummed.

I may take most of this week off and just do some crosstraining or easy walking. I have a ten mile race on Saturday. We'll see how that goes.

I ran my longest run of my current HM training program today... 12 miles.

I did it in 2:24:08... 12 minutes per mile average. I ran out of gas in the last mile - that was 14:38, so other than that, I maintained a pretty flat 11:48 pace overall which I'm really happy about.

When I first signed up for the WDW HM and started posting in this thread I thought the race in January would be my first HM, but as the spring and summer wore on my running has progressed really well.

I now have my first HM on September 8th and then my second at the Philly Half Marathon on November 18 so WDW will be my third.

I toyed with the idea a few weeks ago of switching to the full for January... I'd really love that new medal... but though things have gone so well, I believe I've totally decided that the negatives of trying to run my first marathon less than a year after taking up running outweigh the positives. The marathon (and the WDW marathon) will still be out there waiting for me when I'm ready.

Thanks to everyone here for sharing your experiences, ups and downs... they have helped me appreciate what my body has done with what I've asked of it and what would probably be too much too soon. For the rest of this year and through the winter of 2013, I'm going to be happy with the half marathon distance.

I'll run on Saturday in Disney and walk around the parks on Sunday proudly wearing my medal and cheering on the marathoners.

. For the next long run, if you get the feeling of needing to bail, just walk for 5 or 10 minutes then restart. That may or may not work, but sometimes breaking up the run can work wonders. Do not beat yourself up just yet. We all have bailed on a run and have made the race.

I totally agree here. Sometimes slowing down and walking will help me to build a little energy to finish. Maybe not finish strong, but finish.

I was wondering where all you guys are staying for the marathon? I am most definitely not a runner and will not be participating, but AOA is all booked up for Saturday the 13th in the Little Mermaid rooms. I was just wondering if it was all all you runners staying there? *scowls* Hehe just kidding. It is available Friday and Sunday just not Saturday.

Good luck guys :goodvibes

Yup! Little mermaid room. Friday til Tuesday. Counting down the days :)

Finally got my 13 mile run in today! Went pretty well. I did it in 2:48 which is about 2 minutes off my last half time back in April. Not bad for summer temps. Although running along the beach there was a nice breeze that kept things comfortable. Now I just need to figure out a way to carry more water. That or bring my ATM card so I can stop at 7-11.

Colleen I run with a 2 bottle belt until I hit about 13-15 miles and then switch to a camelbak for longer runs. If you aren't a belt/pack type, you could program some loop courses and stash water in a spot you pass by more than once.

My problem with a 7-11 is that if I was doing a long run, and I stopped to buy something, I probably wouldn't want to start up again! (Plus I'd want to eat something!)

I carry a disposable water bottle and refill it at water fountains on my path; I usually run at either the local parks (long runs between two of them) or the state park, so this works for me, but I do have a belt and have used it a couple times. I like the convenience of it, but it does kind of bother me, so I've switched to the bottle in hand.

My problem with the 7-11 would be that I'd be wanting an icy! :-P

I would consider looping so that you go by a known point with cool water on a frequency that will allow you to refill what you are carrying. I run miles in a park that has a 5 mile loop. I stop off at the car and refill from an ice chest and then head back out.

I stopped into 7-11 twice during my 13 miler on Saturday. I've now vowed to get a fuel belt. I think the one with the two, small water bottles should do. It's a distraction to stop, especially when it's hot out because you just want to stay in the AC. I would rather have my Accelerade on my belt when I'm taking a gel than have to wait for the nearest convenience store. Plus, it was a waste of money because I only drank half the water bottle (16 oz bottle) and threw it out.

For the life of me, I can't loop. If I get close to my car, I will get in and drive home, LOL. If I do a run, I have to go all the way out and then back or I just know I'll cheat myself.

I am the same way! I like to go out and back, I like having a halfway point, and no reason to quit! I did a long run last week, 3 minutes in a bird pooped on me! EW! It landed on my sunglasses, it was so gross, I mopped off and kept going because I knew that if I went home to clean up I would just stay home!

I hear that's good luck. My DW has been pooped on in Disney 4 times over the years. Yuck.

Continuing... I am not sure if it is your good luck or the lucky aim from the bird.

You've seen where i write about the mental toughness associated with the marathon.... IT's a great way to practice.

Another vote for the Camelbak (lots of pockets :thumbsup2) and running out-and-backs! :woohoo:

I have a FlashFlow CamelBack and love it. No bounce like the backpack versions.

lol My husband tried to tell me it was good luck. I tend the lean towards the good aim theory

I am a "looper". At any point of my courses I am no farther than 1 mile from my house. My 20 miler a few of weeks ago was comprised of two 6.6 mile loops and a 7 mile loop. When I pass my house I can refuel my belt and I'm good to go. Another plus is if I start hurting I can easily be home in no time.

I don't like to do loops, but I do sometimes do out and backs, although passing my house is EXTREMELY frustrating.

I'm an out and backer. I can always convince myself to at least finish the first half before I consider quitting. Then at the half I have no choice but to run back.

I can do loops, but a double out and back often gets cut short.

One really good thing about doing loops for me is when I am into a loop and my body starts to get tired, I know there is only a short distance to go but more often than not, when I get back to my house I'm feeling better and continue a little longer. Have had numerous 10K's turn into a 15K or a half marathon.

I loop but nothing near that tight. Yikes, I would be on the couch early. Though this summer, I have been TM'ing and that is a little worse than looping, especially when it is located in the house
