Official Upgrade to OKW thread!

We were upgraded from a preferred room at ASMu from 8/26-9/2 to a 1 bedroom villa at OKW. I am just so excited now!!!!!! I would have been very happy to be at ASMu but I certainly won't say no to this kind of upgrade. At first the CM wanted to do the upgrade to a studio but I told her I'd seen on the DIS others getting upgraded to the 1 bedroom and she did it. I had already decided I wanted OKW since I think the theming is a little nice and I heard the rooms are bigger than SSR, and the CM automatically was checking OKW first telling me that she loves OKW and that she thought I'd like it better. :)

OKW is wonderful!! My parents own DVC at OKW and love it. It's so laid back. There's a golf course that runs right through it. Congratulations to everone who received upgrades.

I wouldn't worry about 1 Bedrooms over studios. In a one bedroom, one of the beds is a fold out couch. So if you are going with people who don't care about fold out beds (such as kids) that's fine. But if you are a party of four adults, someone may not appreciate splitting a room and getting the fold out bed.

The studio has a kitchenette. PERFECT for when you are on the dining plan if you ask me. Ever since we started purchasing the DDP, we actually prefer a studio to one bedrooms because two studios are less points (I think, the points belong to my parents and that's their dept) and everyone gets an actual bed.

However, if your party is two parents and a couple kids, you would probably prefer a one bedroom so you could have your own bedroom  and the kids would be out on the fold out in the livingroom. You'll have two TVs AND you would have a washer and dryer in your suite.

If you are on the dining plan, the kitchen should really not be a factor in your decision if you ask me.

There are washers and dryers by the main pool and the Turtle Pond Pool for people in the studios to use. They are free of charge! But you have to bring your own soap, or purchase it by the machines.

The slide at the main pool is terrific! It looks like a sandcastle. Adults can slide too. I've done it (40 year old here). There is a huge sand area for the kids to play in and some playground equipment. Lot's of steel drum music plays in the background. No zero entry pool though. SSR has one, if that's important to you I'd suggest changing your res over there.

There's tennis courts, shuffle boards, a sand volleyball court. ping pong, bike rentals, arcade, and the quiet pools even have grills if you want to cook out. I may be leaving things out, but you get the picture.

There are washers/dryers by all the pools and there are 4 pools in total. There is ice at all the bus stops for those who are in a studio.

well, they could have sent us to the Poly, that would have made me happier). Can you see any of the fireworks shows from thw OKW?
Yes, depending on which building you're in. We have had good views of Illuminations from several buildings, though when we have the buildings that face the canal, we can only see the fireworks if we stand out in the parking lot. Our best view to date, was in building 62. We enjoyed the entire Illuminations show sitting on our balcony--we could even faintly hear the music. I'm sure the fireworks from the Poly beach are better of course.
I think it's the balconies that face the front of the OKW resort that have the best fireworks views---otherwise, you'd have to stand in the parking lot. Last year we were in bldg 34 and there had to be about 20 people standing in the parking lot watching Illuminations because the balcony on that area face the back of the resort.

I'm on the dining plan and LOVING the idea of a full kitchen. I don't want to cook on vacation, but I think a TS per day is too much restaurant eating. We're upgrading to more signature meals and ordering some frozen pizzas etc to cover the days we just eat in our room. :goodvibes

Just wanted to drop in and tell you guys that I think this is a wonderful surprise from WDW and congratulations to you all!!!:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Maria-thanks for all the great pictures and knowledge of OKW. For some reason it seemed that most people upgrade to SSR instead of OKW.i'm glad we picked OKW it looks heavenly. We have 2 small kids and a double stroller so I was scared about having to lug across the resort with them to get to the bus. I love the pictures of your family.
I'm sending you a PM.

Both resorts have their different appeals. There is no denying that SSR is newer. The decor is more high-end/formal Thomasville line. This would attract alot. OKW is older---built in the early 90's---has more of a light tropical feel. The OKW studios have 2 queen beds, vs the one queen bed and one double sleeper sofa at SSR. Pros and cons to both.
The one bedrooms at OKW are much roomier than the counterpart at SSR----and the balcony at OKW is bigger.

So I can understand how the "newness" of SSR might attract more. For me though, it's OKW.

To all those staying at OKW, please take care of my home since I'll be coming home in November. Have a wonderful stay. :thumbsup2

We just got an upgrade from the POP to a studio at OKW for 8/27 to 9/4. I'm very excited because we have never stayed at anything but a value resort before.
