Official Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2012 thread

Hi Kim, I hope the Honolulu Marathon went well for you and you'll come here and tell us all about it! I saw that they are starting the 1st annual Honolulu half marathon in March, it would be so tempting to do that race someday too!

OMG! I ran the Vegas rock and Roll Half Marathon on Sunday and it was a disaster. They ran out of swag bags, shirts and medals but the worst was they ran out of water and cytomax and were taking down the tables way before the race ended.

They didn't let us go in waves so there was NO room. I finished in 3:11 and my usual 1/2 time is 2:45. There was just no room to go any where.

Take a look at their facebook page or just google RNR Vegas problems and you will see what I mean.

After the race we were all funneled into Mandalay Bay and 1,000 of people were stuck in the hallways for hours. People were passing out left and right.

The worst part was that the water they did have must have been contaminated (they were filling trash cans from fire hydrants and then dipping the cups in the trrash can with their bare hands) because 1,000 of people were sick after the race.

I ran RnR Vegas on Sunday as well. I didn't have the same experience as what others are posting on Facebook (I feel so bad for them) and I think it is because I didn't need to go in to Mandalay Bay after the race. I also didn't take any water/Cytomax from the stations because I had my own water. I definitely think things could have been a bit more organized. When we came up on the first aid station and they were out of water, I thought that to be completely unacceptable. Although I didn't need the water, others did. All in all, I had a good race though. It was totally packed and never thinned out. I think this race attracted everyone from walkers to runners to in-between. I also think it attracted people who thought they could "party" while they walked the race route. I saw multiple people drinking alcohol and celebrating that. 13.1 miles is pretty serious and to be drinking bottles of beer at mile 1...that's just not smart IMO!

I'm excited for Tink but will definitely purchase some warmer clothing to run in. I nearly froze at the end of the Vegas race. Thankfully my DH was there to throw his sweatshirt on me and quickly usher me back to our room at Luxor. ;)

To the person asking about what to wear for cooler weather, I find that I need gloves. I start with the gloves, at some point take them off, but then I find I need them again.

Wow, I saw the FB page and couldn't believe some people's experiences. I hope they fix the problems for next year, it looked like a fun race. I'm not surprised that in addition to all the problems there were so many first timers that seemed very underprepared.

I wonder if I typo'ed my email address when I registered for this race because I haven't gotten any emails :confused3 I must have.

I haven't gotten an e:mail yet either. :confused3

The most important email is the next one! I'm sure we'll all be posting when we receive the waiver/bib # email so if you don't get it you know to contact them.

re: rnr vegas - my dad ran rnr miami this weekend and he said it was very organized. he's done so many races over so many years, so i hold his opinion in high regard. i also found it interesting that rnr posted on facebook right before the race that "miami was a non-hydrant market" and they will be using bottled water.

dare i say rnr learned from some of it's mistakes?

I think that race has changed the way many of us look at water stations, that's for sure!

I'm so happy I found these boards. I'll be running in my first Half at the Tinker Bell race and am soooo excited. I can't believe it's almost here.

I"m coming off a new injury and just now trying to back on track with training. There's so much to do still. I haven't even decided on a costume.

I've enjoyed reading the posts here. I'm sure I'll continue to spend time here. :hippie:

:welcome: There are many half marathon first timers here, including myself! I know I've gotten a lot of great advice and inspiration from the people on these boards.

Looking forward to my 10 mile run this weekend... not! :lmao: its been so cold that we have to do them on treadmills. Does anyone have a good idea for a movie we could watch that would make the two hours fly by? All I want for xmas is these last few long prep runs to go quickly! :santa:

I don't have much treadmill advice, I've done 7 runs on the treadmill so far in the last couple of months and hated every one of them! As for movies, I'd say nothing that requires you to hear a lot of dialogue, since its difficult to hear over the noise of you and the TM! I saw that you went to Aulani for you honeymoon in your siggie, how was it? I'd love to visit someday.

As for gloves, I get my cheap ones from Target, they have 2 packs for $1. I even got a two pack on clearance last January for 75 cents. I've found they are very handy and if you need to dump them, its no big deal.

I hope everyone has great runs this weekend, I'm doing my first 10K on Saturday. Have a great day, Tinks!

Apparently I'm destined to never ride the Matterhorn. It was closed when I was there in July and will be closed again when I'm there for the race. :( :sad1:

If you come back for the DL 1/2 in Sept., it should be open. Over the past year they've been doing a major refurbishment. Last summer it was changing/updating the tracks and the inside stuff. When it closes from Jan-June, they're putting in new sleds. Kinda bummed, b/c I like the look of the old ones. I think after the ride opens in June, it'll be awhile before it closes again. :goodvibes

Hello! Got back last night, and I really did not want to leave. Race went well, a little long when we did the straight away out and back in the middle of the race on the 72 and going back up Diamondhead wasn't as easy as the 1st time!:lmao: Weather racewise was good and bad~ not bad humidity and cloud coverage/partly cloudy for most of the race which I loved, b/c that was what I was worried about most of all. But the bad was the trade winds going across the course. Wasn't really expecting that, but overall it was good. I had read that there was a high contingency from the Japanese runners, but was still surprised by the #'s. My dad said he heard the race announcer say that b/w 2/3 & 75% were Japanese runners! It was really interesting to see the difference in running "outfits" and gu's. They also had large group exercises before the start of the race which I really liked.

I heard about the 1/2 too! Definitely one I will go back for.

Overall for the week, it was nice, weather race day was the same for the week so my shark dive/swim got cancelled and wanted to do that most of all, but I got in kayaking in Kailua/Laniki and that beach was absolutely beautiful. Didn't want to leave when the shuttle came to take me back to Waikiki. Monday was like heaven, thankfully, full sun and not really hot~ Spent the whole day at the beach and it was probably one of the most relaxing days I've had in years. It was so nice!! :cloud9:

Good luck on your 10K this weekend!!:cheer2:

Sarah~ sorry to hear about the problems w/ Vegas!! It's disappointing b/c it's not like it was RnR's 1st race either. To run out of everything is not right. I know that it's in Dec, but it's still Vegas where it can get hot and at night and you know some people are going to drink and then no water! That's horrible!

Thought of something else weather wise for everybody. At the targets around me, in the $1 bins at the front of the stores, they have those hand and foot warmers. You just shake the bag and it warms up and stays warm for 3 or 4 hours. I know they also sell them at Sports Authority and places like that. They're little and light so they'll be perfect if it gets cold.

Saw the 5k course in the program, love that we start in the park! :woohoo: I know I just got back, but I'm so excited for this race weekend!!! :hyper::hyper:

Not sure about what I running this weekend~ just play it by ear.

Good luck w/ training this week everyone!

Hello All!!

Super excited about the upcoming Never Land 5K and the course. It's going to be so fun starting inside in front of the castle :yay:

My daughter is running the 5K with me (she's 14) and is thinking about wearing a Tinker Bell costume. We are both wondering about the wings...how annoying will they be? Also, is there a place you prefer to purchase things like tutus or running apparel that can be used in running?

Note on the weather: we had crazy winds late November/early December - but hopefully that won't be an issue in January. To be honest I'm more concerned with rain. Last year my daughter had a horrible fall in California Adventure during a rainstorm and the staff on duty was HORRIBLE. The "nurse" was a nightmare. So horrible that after 8 years of being an AP - I didn't renew our passes. Needless to say I'm really paranoid about rain in January :scared1:

I ran a 12k race yesterday. When I came upon every aid station, I looked around to see if volunteers were wearing gloves and what their water source was. Even though I'm one of the lucky ones that didn't get sick in Vegas, I learned a lot from the complaints! Doing RnR Arizona in January and will watch for their water sources. Non bottled water is not acceptable!!! Glad to hear they cleaned it up for Miami!

Congrats on your 12K! :thumbsup2 The RnR Arizona looks like a fun one. I'm doing the 10K at the Phoenix Marathon in March.

I will be wearing a WISH shirt and hope to meet some people at whatever meet-up happens. I'll be out there by myself so it'll be nice to have someone to talk to. :)

There will be several of us wearing WISH shirts so keep your eyes open and don't be shy about saying hi. :wave2:

And speaking of meeting WISHers . . . shall we agree to do our meet at the fountain in front of the entrance to the Grand Californian at Downtown Disney on Saturday, 1/28/12 at 4 pm with pictures at 4:30 pm? I'll post an event on the WISH FB if that is okay with everyone and post it in the first post on our thread.

I'm so happy I found these boards. I'll be running in my first Half at the Tinker Bell race and am soooo excited. I can't believe it's almost here.

:welcome: Glad you could join us! Hope your injury is behind you and it's smooth sailing for the rest of your training. :cool2:

proudmonkeymama,
Welcome and contrats on signing up for your first 1/2 !!!!!! Disney races are so much fun and I am sure you will sign up for more in the future. The Disneyland 1/2 marathon that takes place over Labor Day Weekend is always a must and is so much fun. Good luck with your training :cheer2:
Vicki

I agree that a Disney race is a ton of fun. :smickey:

Vicki, can you share how the walk is to the start at DL? Is it like the long walk at Epcot?

Sorry no advice for the TM. :flower3: The good news is that we are coming to the end of the long runs soon and then it is the best part of training -- taper! ;)

The most important email is the next one! I'm sure we'll all be posting when we receive the waiver/bib # email so if you don't get it you know to contact them.

Good luck on your 10K today, Lisa. :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: Can't wait to hear all about it!

I can post a list with everyone's bib numbers in the first post when we get them. Hopefully it will be soon. :yay:

Thanks, too, for the reminder about the hand and foot warmers, too. :sunny:

The Never Land 5K looks like a lot of fun. I may have to reconsider doing that one. :tink:

I like www.sparkleskirts.com for running skirts. I am using a black skirt with a WISH feather for the half with my WISH shirt. It's not here yet but I have been training in my black tech skirt, which is very sparkly, anything to make those indoor track runs a bit more exciting. :rotfl: You see a lot of wings and other costume items by the side of the road during races so be sure that you train with whatever you plan to wear. I saw an amazing Ariel costume at the Princess -- I'm not sure how she managed to run with that mermaid bottom. princess:

Good luck to everyone on their training runs this week-end! :tink:

I know a lot of people also use team sparkle for their running skirts. Here's the site: http://www.team-sparkle.com/ I don't think the wings should be a problem. I've seen people wearing them in the 1/2 before. There was a booth at the DL 1/2 last year that sold the sparkle skirts and they even had wings. The youth size was $6, don't remember the adult price though. It was at the far end of the exhibit hall, close to the far wall and where you pick up your t-shirts.

I feel you about the rain. I'll be okay as long as it's not during the race. After Nike last year and RnR Providence this year, I'm good w/o the rain. Sorry about the fall.

Where are you staying at for the race? From the Harbor Crosswalk, for the DL 1/2, it takes about 10-15 minutes, depending on how fast you walk. Tink will be a little longer b/c you have to go to the other side of PP from DTD as opposed to the parking lot right at the DLH. I tried to get the distance of DTD on a running map once and if I did it correctly, it's little more than a 1/3 mile from end to end. Hopefully the GC will be open from DTD and we can cut through that way. I think that way will be a little faster than all the way through DTD and the back parking lot behind AMC. But if you're closer to Katella than the Crosswalk, it's probably easier and shorter that way. From Katella & Harbor to Katella and West/DL Dr. is 1/2 mile. Can you tell I've mapped a few runs at DL?:rotfl2: Hope that helps!

Thanks! :flower3: I'm staying at DVC Grand Californian so it sounds like it will be an easy walk. I was also wondering about the walk from the start area to the corrals -- it looks like they are close together at DL, unlike at Epcot.

How's everyone's training going? With just a little more than 5 weeks the time will really start racing by now. :goodvibes

They are. If you go out the lobby area where the cars pull in, in front of the hotel, in front of that is the street and I believe a stop light. All you have to do is cross the street to be on the same side as PP and turn left. The parking lot/staging area is on the right, just on the other side of PP. The corrals will be on that same street. You'll probably pass them as you walk to the staging area. It's all really close together.

Awwwwwwww RunDisney now I'm all sad!
We were going to do the C2C this year with the wine and dine and tink but they moved the date for a new run.... we won't be there at the same time now.Totally bummed out, but I will just have to appreciate this run on its own now which will be easy to do but still... so bummed! :headache:

Sorry about your C2C bid! I don't think they took that into account when they brought back Tower and already announced the W & D race dates!! I'm really tempted to do that one; it was one I really wanted to run before they stopped a few years back, but we'll have to wait and see. (Really wish they would do one in DL as well) I'm doing Goofy in '13 and lottery for NYC in Nov~ if I get into NY then no, but if not... maybe a quick out and back w/ no parks and do parks in Jan. If I could just get someone to buy me a private jet, flying back east would be so much easier!!

Hey everyone!

I am going to have some wristbands made for the Tinker Bell 1/2 marathon. I would like to get a count of everyone that would like one and that will attend the Wish meet on Saturday.

These are like the Livestrong wristbands. The front will say Wish Racing Team and the back will say EITHER Tinker Bell Inaugural OR Tinker Bell Half 2012 (suggestions are appreciated).

If you can post here or send me a PM so I can get a count, I would greatly appreciate it :)

DD and I just registered for the Princess. We will be going for the C to C medal! Guess I ought to start training. No, really.... Have been doing some training but not as much as I should be doing. All these darn holiday activities getting in the way. Did a half at the end of October. My weekly long training sessions are back up to 9 miles, so I should be good. Hope to get that 9 miles in on Dec. 26th. That should get me back on track. At least I started working on our costumes! Staying at DL Hotel, so any tips or suggestions are appreciated since this is the first time at DL.

Congratulations on signing up for the Princess! princess: DL Hotel is looking pretty good in the pictures as they finish their big remodeling. What will probably surprise you the most is how close everything is compared to WDW.

Anyone else have a long run this week-end? I am doing 14 on the indoor track tomorrow. Luckily I get to start at 5 am so it won't take up too much of the day. I have to confess one of my favorite parts of training is taper! ;)

What kind of stuff are you looking for? 1 that I can think of off the top of my head is the monorail. It's close to the hotel and takes you right into Tomorrowland. Not only does it really help at the end of the night when you're tired, but it's easier than walking down to DL. Plus it's a nice ride. It doesn't stop in DCA though, just DL. Oh! And unless they've changed it, the fastpass for Thunder Mtn isn't hooked up to the other fastpass machines in the park so you can get some even if you have ones for other rides.

I had 5 this morning and 9 on Sunday. Little envious of your indoor track right now though. It was freezing this morning. I go out b/w 5~5:30, easier to make traffic lights, and I can't tell you what the temp was when I left, but at 8:15 it was a nice and warm 33!!!

:santa::santa::santa: Merry Christmas everybody!! :santa::santa::santa:

I am doing the Princess too!! I did it last year and it was a lot of fun, it was my first race ever.

I need to work on my costume. I have had it planned out for months but I haven't even bought all of the supplies for it yet so I need to get on that.

I have been MIA for about a month. Around Thanksgiving my schedule got all screwy at work and I missed 2 of my 3 runs and then I came down with a cold and missed another 2 the next week. I reworked my schedule and I think I am back on track now. I did 11 last week and will be doing 13 next week. I should get 15 in before the race so I am feeling okay about it all. I may even do another 13 instead of the 15, I'll have to see how I feel when the time comes.

It's getting close now. I can't wait to get my waiver and bib number.

I would love one !!! Thank you so much for doing that. It's a great idea.

Ran 10 miles on Sun. I wanted to do about 5 today but spend the afternoon baking Christmas cookies with our son. With all the baking I'm doing I am so glad I am having to train for a big race :yay: I'm hoping to get a run in sometime this weekend but with our son I don't think I'm going be able to get away. Too many exciting things happening for Christmas. Oh well...maybe Monday.

Merry Christmas Tinker Bell runners !

Merry Christmas to all our Tinker Bell WISHers! :tinker:

Brrr! That is a bit cold for me. Plus I am a back of the packer and I was out there for 4:45 -- that is way too long to be freezing out there for me. :santa:

It's kind of nice to have this week-end's long run out of the way isn't it? :flower3:

Hope you are feeling better soon, Summer! :flower3:

Still five weeks before our race so time for some more good training runs for our sick and busy Tinker Bells! :santa:

Can't wait to see you all soon! :tink:

Hello all! My name is Melinda and I'm taking some time getting caught up on this board. I, too, will be doing the Tinker Bell Half Marathon and both my husband and I are doing the Neverland 5K the day before. I'm so excited to get the inaugural medal. I feel good that its a Disney race - they do them right. Even big companies can have a snafu (just read some Rock n Roll Las Vegas race recaps -I wasn't there but heard some people had troubles) but I trust Disney to pull off a spectacular race, even the inaugural one. This will be my 7th half marathon since I started running 18 months ago, and my 3rd Disney Half Marathon. I did the WDW Half last January, and the Disneyland Half in September. Both were phenomenal experiences for me. I'm not a fast runner... my times range from 3:20 to 3:30, but I'm hoping for something better at Tinker Bell. Cheers to everyone, and here's hoping to a fabulous race for all of us!

I can't believe its only about a month away:goodvibes I'm so excited, this will be my first trip to DL. Hope everyone's training is going well

Good morning Tinker Bells! :tink:

I've posted information about the WISH meet on Saturday, 1/28/12 at 4:00 pm on the first post of our thread. The meet is at 4:00 p.m. and pictures at 4:30 p.m. It is at the fountain in front of the entrance to the Grand Californian at DTD -- we will move to the overhang in case of inclement. There is also a link to the Event on Facebook. There is a WISH group on Facebook that you can join, if you haven't already. Hope to see you all there!

Remember that some of us will also be at the W reunion tent pre and post race.

It's a fabulous place! :smickey: How is your training going?

I did 14 miles on Friday. One more long run before the Tink and then my favorite part of training -- taper! :thumbsup2

You know, I was a little concerned with the back to back and the plan my trainer had me on to do it...you would think I would know better than to doubt her by now because it always works out and I felt great! Right after the DL half, I got back into town, had a massage and did a 30-45 min workout on a stationary bike...then a 5 miler that weekend. The follwing week I did 3, 4 and 7 miles, then 4, 4 and 6 miles the week after and then week of the race was 3 and 4 miles then race day. For the DL I came in at 2:34...Wine and Dine was 2:48, but we stopped for lots of pics and one restroom break for the BF. I'm confident that had we not stopped for the pics I would have been right in line with my DL time...I felt great the entire race! So, don't fret!

I love your posts and pics, Cripey. I think I saw you at the DL 2011 Half, actually. I was wondering... what kind of trainer do you work out with? I work out with a personal trainer twice a week, and she also does a Run Club from Feb--June getting ready for our local Half Marathon (Garry Bjorklund Half here in Duluth, MN). I have trained "some" for this Tinker Bell Half, but not like I really wanted to. We had a few interruptions in there. Just before the DL Half (the entire week before actually) we were on an Alaskan Disney cruise, got home, then i registered for Tink through Get Travel although it was officially sold out. After DL half I HAD to do it. This will be my 7th half in a year and a half but I don't feel that I have really followed to the letter a training plan for any of them. Heck, for some of them I didnt even have a training plan, lol. I was doing great, working out 6 days a week, 2 with a trainer and 4 days of running 3--4 miles, and then we went to WDW Nov 25--Dec5 and I ran once while gone and have found it difficult to get going with the running since being back. I have roughly 4 weeks. Do any of you think any progress can be made in that time?:confused3
