Official thread for the 2010 Princess 1/2 Marathon & 5k- REGSITRATION IS OPEN!

I use Nike+ too... what I have found to measure it's accuracy is to plan a route (has to be outside) on the Map it feature or on http://www.mapmyrun.com/ which can give you exact distances you would go, and then I compare that to my Nike+ once I've done that run to see the difference. The Nike+ has been accurate for me, so that is what I go with, even when running on TM.

I have the same system and find my Nike+ and Map My Run dot com almost exact. I do find running on the treadmill much more daunting--slowing me down both physically and mentally.

I held onto my money long enough! I registered my sister and I as a team--don't really understand the additional money for this but she was at work and I wanted to make sure she registered ASAP!

Anyway, we are the "Jersey Girlz" team! I think I made a mistake in my estimated time. I put in 2:45. I had no idea what so ever of what to put there. I anticipate running most of the way at a decent jog. Based on past experience, what corral will we end up in?

I don't mean to complain but it is cold outside!!! I know all the you gals up north must hate me right now but boy is it cold here!!! I'm pretty sure I'm going to freeze to death taking the dog for a walk. There is no way I can run outside. I am such a wimp!!! I have access to a treadmill but don't I feel like running on it makes my back hurt. If it is cold tomorrow, I'm getting on my spinning bike. I'll just spin until it gets warm again!!

I do agree with those of you who think the treadmill pace is off. I've always been able to run around a 10-11 minute mile and my current treadmill kick my rear at a 12 minute mile pace. I just don't think the treadmill is correct. My Nike+ is on it's way so I can't wait to double check my pace outside.

I hope it warms up soon, for everyone!!! BRRRRRRR.....

Hi princess runners,

I registered in October but haven't received anything besides my registration confirmation from Disney. Has anyone else received any emails or information about the events happening that weekend or the after-party? Thanks so much - I'm getting excited about the race even though I am training mostly on the treadmill in Maine. Hoping to run 9 min. mile pace but plan on pics with the characters too so may be slower. Good luck to everyone!

Nah... we don't hate you! You are conditioned to where you live! If your not used to the cold, of course it's going to bother you, but when your used it (all your life!) it doesn't bother you so much!
Spinning is great alternative... I stared a spinning class 2 weeks ago, man it's tough! But a great workout!

I have not recieved a think in the mail... are we suppose too?

Wanted to thank some of you ladies for some recent advice. I was trying to build up my endurance when running on the TM.. as I was running on 1.5 incline I was having a hard time running long distances without taking a walking break. My thought was keeping the incline would better train me for running outdoors, but it was hurting my endurance overall. Well today I decided not to do an incline just to see how far I could go on the TM, well I did 4 miles in 48 minutes, (a new personal best!!) and I did the first 2 miles without a walking break! That was HUGE for me! I know it won't be that great when running outside later this week but I hope it will help in my endurance overall! Thanks to all who suggested I try that!

You should have been receiving the Princess emails.
They just tell you how full the race is and what things you can $$$ extra, like the party.

I think I am getting them as I did it last year, as I did not sign up this year as i'm entered through Spira.

I apologize if I may have mised this somewhere, but is there no post-race party this year? The one at Hollywood Studios last year was great! But, I see no mention of it this year (even though it was in the brochure). This will greatly affect my travel plans, so I was wondering if anyone has heard anything?

I have sent several emails to Disney Endurance Sports, and left them a message, but have gotten no replies.

Thanks!

Morning Princesses!

There's been a lot going on here, and I had a couple questions as well!!

I just started using the Nike+ sportband. The first day I tried it, I used it on the treadmill. However, my distance on the sportband was different from what the treadmill showed. I went online to see if I could figure it out, and I read that if you use it on a treadmill that it will not be as accurate as running outside. Guess I'll have to wait till it's warm enough to run outside to see how I'm doing!!

As far as the e-mails and updates about the race, I haven't received anything either, so I'm glad someone brought that up. I've been checking my junk folders to see if it was getting sent there, but nothing!!

KAA1972-I know what you mean about the cold! I was excited that it finally got up into the 40's here yesterday. I can't wait to actually get one of my long runs done outside, so I sure hope it stays halfway warm this weekend!

DonnaJean - Congrats on your new personal best! Keep building on that! Most running experts (not me, I've read this in Runner's World Magazine) say that running with an incline on your treadmill is a great way to stay conditioned so that when you do head back outside you'll be more able to handle the elements (wind, hills, etc)...but the key thing here is that I believe that is more for runners who are already established in their running distance/pace. You are still building up your distance and endurance and that is the important thing for you right now....to just get the miles you need to finish the race. Once you are completing the miles you want to run, then start to work on speed/hills. But once again, congrats! Isnt it amazing how great you feel after every accomplishment. Just think how great it will feel running across that finish line!!!

I did not know that, and it makes total sense... Thanks!

I can't wait to cross the finish line!

Congratulations on breaking through this barrier. I think we get ourselves into a certain mindset and begin to believe "this is the best I can do" -- way-to-go on pressing through! It was the advice given to you several posts back that made ME re-think how I was training. I decided to get on a flat TM and see how far/fast I could go and also did a personal best for 4 miles this morning. I'm so glad to have people encouraging us from all levels!

As someone else said...we are going to feel amazing as we cross that finish line knowing we've worked so diligently.
Congrats again :cheer2:

It is great having the input... especially for "new" runners like me!
Congrats on your 4 miles!!

So your doing a faster pace on the TM or slower? Usually you do a faster pace on the TM than outside in the elements, (wind, temperature etc can effect how you move when outside) but it's possible to be doing better. I'd say it's better to be doing your best pace outside than on the TM, afterall the race will be outside!

Good luck!

I'm slower on the TM than outside. By about 1.5 to 2 minutes. Next time I'm at the Y, I'm going to ask how often they get the TMs recalibrated. If they say regularly, then I just won't know what to think. Maybe something is wrong with my Garmin. I guess I'll have to look into it...

THis is really interesting...I use Nike+ on my iPod which I calibrated at a track. I've been running on the TM and having the same issue you are. I want to run at a 10:30/mile pace and can't get past 11:20/mile on the TM. I think the TM is off and my iPod could still be a little off. I don't have a Garmin but you'd think it would be pretty accurate, using satellites and all. I really hope my iPod isn't too far off as I"m hoping my pace is what I think it is. I'm also hoping for a couple warmer weekends in February (just looking for 35 degrees!) here in MA so I can long-run outside. I'll use mapmyrun and check it with my iPod for distance which should help.

Hope this sheds some light...
:)

I wish I could use the Garmin while on the TM, but it tracks distance with GPS, so that wouldn't work!

I have a new TM (1 wk old) and they are very accurate :) I also have the NIKE+ which I love but do not use it for accuracy since if your stride if off or if you are going around things like side stepping snow or ice it can give you a false distance.

If you are on a gym tm then they too are serviced and are accurate, if you have an older TM that you are not the orginial owner it is possible there is something wrong with the distance.

I can honestly say that last week I swore the TM was broken, it seemed to take forever for me to run 4 miles!!! Bottom line I did 4 in 55 minutes, but last night I did 5 in 1:05 --- stranger but I cant seem to get my pace or stride right to get a good reading on my ability.

Many say that the TM is faster because it gets you moving and keeps you there, however there are others that say when on a TM you are working against your own ability to speed up and down since you are stuck at a specific speed.

I guess the bottom line is as long as your doing it - trust one thing - its all about endurance and building it up to complete the 1/2!

I guess I'll have to push myself so I'm at least at a 15 minute mile on both the TM and on the street. :confused3

As for the weather, I was very excited to see the temp get up to 37 today. Of course, who knows what it will be by the time I get home. I may have to skip tonight. I'm working larte and won't be home before 8. With the cold and the dark, I think tonight might be a skip day.

Syko, thanks for including the email. I haven't received this one, so I enjoyed reading it. You may want to know, though, that if someone clicks that link at the bottom, they will be able to cancel your emails from Disney Sports.

Thanks for letting me know..... but i'm sure that no one from WISH would do it.

You really won't need to train on an incline because Florida is flat, flat, flat. Your only hills will be the on and off ramps. So happy you have an improvement!!! Sounds like you are doing great!!!

Thank you to the person who posted the princess email. I finally got through to someone at Disney Sports and they told me that since I registered through Active.com that they hadn't yet received all the info into their systems in order for me to be receiving the emails. Right now she said those who ran the Princess half last year or were already in their system would be the only ones receiving them. Supposedly, the rest of us should start receiving them soon.:)
