Official thread for the 2010 Princess 1/2 Marathon & 5k- REGSITRATION IS OPEN!

Hi, yes, that's exactly what it means.. if it says cross train, then you don't run that day -- you don't want to overdue it! Doing each week 2x i am sure wouldn't hurt -- until mabye you get to the long days -- but then again, i am not a full runner - so i can't really help there.
I plan on starting my 14 week plan right after Thanksgiving, for now, i am just trying to keep active every week and logging at least 10 miles a week - walk/run, until i start my training.

You are right--I don't want to tire myself out. I guess I am just worried that 14 weeks won't be enough time for me. I am worried that if I can't do my long run one week, it will throw off my training. Have you ever had weeks where you couldn't fit in your long run due to unforeseen circumstance? Did you ever have to switch your long run day?

Blake, I am here!

I still would like to lurk although I actually have a question regarding training with gels, shot blocks and jelly beans.

I have had amazing runs after consuming gels. Should I back off the gels until it gets closer to race day? Or actually stop eating them until race day?

Thanks in advance!

I use shot blocks every time I train, I just use less of them then I would in a race.
I think it depends on how hard you are training, I don't use them for less than 13 miles.
I have also hard people say that you should take gels so that you know how your body is going to react, it would be very bad if you waited to race day and then gut an upset tummy because you took a gel.

I agree with syko - i would just train as you normally would.. eat/gel whatever.. I use gels, but won't use them under say - 6 miles or so - then i would do one at the 3 mile mark..

I used Gels at the last Princess, and they work for me.. I do them every 3 miles. I can't do the beans too much, as i find it more annoying to chew while i am walking/running.. the gel texture is kinda gross, but once you get use to it, it's ok.

What exactly do the gels do for you? Give you an energy boost? I am only up to about 3 miles right now, so I know it's not for me (yet), but I keep reading/hearing about others that are using them.

Thanks Caitsmama & syko. I actually have had one for every 4 to 4.5 miles. Not every time but I can tell a big difference. I wonder if it is mind over matter??

I am planning on running the Half with my sister, BlakeNJ so I will not start the formal training for a couple of weeks. I just ordered my very own MFM book. Blake, thanks for the suggestion!

Shots and gels are a semi-solid, easily chewable source of carbohydrates, your body's preferred source of fuel during activity, some also contain electrolytes.
So you get an energy boost and the ones with electrolytes help keep that balanced too.

Eventhough I use a shot with electrolytes, I still carry 2 electrolyte drinks, it all depends on how hard you are training and in what weather conditions.

I also carry Powerade with me - and constantly sip the entire race.. I am a big sipper!! As well as using the gels.

A question and a fun discovery :)

I was at party city the other day and (for some unknown reason) they had the sport beans at the checkout. So I bought a pack, and I really like them. I got the blue kind, which to me tasted like gatoraide. I had one pack after I ran and felt good, didn't feel the need to take a nap that day. I'm going to try them before running and see how they do.

Now for the question...When do people ususally start booking airfare, hotels, tickets and meal plans? I want to try and find good deals, but I don't want to wait too long and not be able to find anything.

Well.. My hotel is booked - Port Orleans Riverside - with the race discount. My plane fare will be booked the day it opens up on Southwest.
Meal plans and stuff i can't help with - i don't do the meal plans and i have an annual pass.

However, keep in mind that i HAVE to do all this stuff the second it becomes open, as my sis is getting married in WDW the friday after the race - so we are there for 10 days. :)

I booked my hotel (all star: Music) yesterday. I can't wait for this adventure. I've started running now... I am an extreme beginner. Off the couch more or less. Though I have been strength training for almost a year, I don't have a cardio routine as of yet. So I'm increasing stamina and endurance slowly... By the time the Half comes along I should be good. DH and I are registering next month... Can't wait!

Put my DSis (Amanda(acourtwdw2)) and I on the list for the half. We will be registering after we get back from WDW in Sept. We will be staying at either OKW or SSR. Last year we did the 5k and I was sad that I didn't do the half(didn't think I was ready). But all that changes next year! My 40th bday is in Feb. so this trip will be my present to myself. :)

Since I am starting my training early, should I just do each week twice?

I did the first year. I used the run/walk schedule in MFM and planned out on the calendar to do each week twice. I was starting from the very beginning so thought I could use the extra training. And like you said, that way if I missed a week or had a bad week, there was the next week to make it up.

I also did a 12 miler as my last LR before the half...mentally, 10 just didn't seem enough. I knew if I could run 12, I could drag myself the last 1.1 miles on race day. I don't double up the weeks anymore but I do still run the 12 miler as my final LR before a half.

Be real careful doing that. The gels are meant to be used instead of the electrolyte replacement drinks. Mixing the two can lead to too much sodium in your system, particularly when you're dehydrating during a race or LR.

Definitely make sure you train with whatever form of hydration/electrolyte replacement you choose so you know how it will effect you during the race. Nothing new on race day!!

Annette & Amanda!!! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: I was trying to remember what your user IDs were the other day :upsidedow Now I know where to find you! :flower3:

Hi Diane :) Good to see you here.

I purchased a CD from Best Buy tonight of all Princess music to help get us going. Amanda is loading it in her IPOD as I type.

Have a great night everyone :)

Hello all! Sorry I've been missing for a few weeks. Life has been crazy since DH came back from deployment about a month ago. It's wonderful having him home but definitely an adjustment!

So far one of my friends and I are officially signed up. I booked us at POFQ last week for Mar 4-8. Wahoo! We're so pumped!!! :cool1: I'm also crossing my fingers for a possible bounceback when we're there in September for the EE Challenge, but we'll see!

On another note, Tuesday I ran my first full mile and today I ran one 10 min and two 5 mins. I am so pumped!!! I finally feel like I've jumped a major hurdle in my training and I feel great!!!! :woohoo::yay:

Should I be looking for a new shoe for training and running the half in Jan?? Does a shoe make a difference when only running a half? What I fear the most about going into the running store for a fitting is getting directed to the more expensive shoe rather than the best shoe for me.

Most importantly, during these economic times, I am trying to save whatever I can and really can't afford top of the line. Then again, I don't want to hurt myself especially having recovered from a replaced ACL 2 years ago. I am sure I am prone to injury.

What is the average cost of a running shoe? Do you have to pay extra for a fitting?

For me, new shoes made ALL the difference. I too was skeptical of how much it would cost and if it was worth it. I bought them about a month ago, and I could not believe the difference in my running and how I felt. My back and knees no longer bother me. I went to Fleet Feet who did an excellent job asking what was bothering me, watching me run, and testing several different shoes and orthodics for me. I did not at all feel like they were just trying to sell me the most expensive shoe, just the right one for me. I'm not going to lie, it was not cheap ($150) but it made ALL the difference! The shoes last for about 6-8 months and the orthodics last for 18 months.
