Official Poly construction update thread **updated video page 103(2/17/15)**

Don't know how long the previous rehab of the volcano pool took, but if the rehab of the GF courtyard pool is any indicator, it could be at least 6 months.

By way of reference, Disney started on that rehab about exactly one year ago and didn't finish until early April of this year.

Also somewhat discouraging is the fact that they advertised that the work would be finished by December of last year (so it took more than three months more than they projected) and also didn't announce the pool closure until about 6 weeks before they started work.

So if the Poly pool refurb starts on, say Jan. 2, Disney may not announce it until around Thanksgiving. And the work may continue until well into next summer.

This is exactly what is worrying me. We are booked GV CL next August. I'm not concerned with the view since we are rarely in the room and I'm (don't shoot me) not as concerned on the waterfall. I am concerned about Kona and O'hana being open - as we don't like to deal with transportation for meals. I also would like to rent a cabana and hang by the pool, so a pool closure would be a real disappointment.

I'm debating making a second reservation some where (although I don't have the foggiest clue where, my heart is at the Poly next year, not a GF fan and am tired of AKL) as a back up. Best I can do is wait, watch and see. I just hope they get on with it sooner rather than later.

I emailed the IPO in regards to what type of noise they were expecting during our stay (CL Oct 30-Nov4) as we have a very light sleeping 1 year old and this is what I received in return:

" As for the construction we do not know exactly what is being done but there will be loud construction noise-most likely throughout the day when guests are normally in the park.

At this time we are not sure if construction will happen at night.

We apologize if this has caused any inconvenience. "

Hmmm....well, that's not very reassuring, is it?

Hmmm , perhaps bring white noise machine? No naps would really be a problem for my kids, good luck and have a great trip!

They will have to offer some place for food. In the past they had options like Tangaroa Terrace (which they have mentioned opening when the restaurants are closed) and when they closed Captain Cook’s they relocated it to the old Snack Isle location until it was done. There is no guarantee as to what will remain open or if Kona and ‘Ohana will reopen as the same thing. When I can share more info I will but for now that is all I can say.

This sounds very cryptic, tikiman. We are planning on having my dd birthday at ohana in late Feb. 2014. We are looking at 15-20 people, some local. Should I take the risk or should I just book CM instead. Any thoughts? I already booked it so will they help me get somewhere else if they close it?

This is totally my fear, too. I know that plans are subject to change, but I really, really wish that they would let us know as soon as they know their intentions. We're within 180 days now, and as time marches onward, it'll be that much harder to find a "good" substitute. My poor husband has worked very hard to save the money that permits us to stay at the beloved Poly (our hearts are set on it) and finally get to eat at O'Hana. I'll be devastated if our family vacation is ruined by no pool, no beach, no view, no tiki torches, and no O'Hana...and $6,000 gone. As well as the "magic." :sad1: Sorry to be a Debbie Downer. Our vacations are few & far between, and this is it.

Ughhhh, we arrive Sept 16-22. CL GV and that email about construction noise STRESSES me out ! Maybe we should switch to GF but I really wanted to try the Poly :) Thanks so much to STeve and everyone else for keeping us updated.

Im going this december. I thought they werent starting construction until 2014?
I will change to the wilderness lodge if i can find out for a fact there will be construction at that time

I feel the same way about GF as back up, have you thought about CR,BLT, or WL? I hope that you have the information that you need soon to make your choice!

You should know for sure over the next month or so what will be going on around Tahiti/sunset point. As for GCH and Pool? time will tell on that. WL is very nice resort also!

Mindy 20 I feel your pain so close to your trip! Try to stay as relaxed as you can, I know that's hard with so much planning and $$$ invested in this trip. Have you been contacted yet? You do have some time to see whats going to be over the next weeks, I bet they would move you to GF or CR if it is too much for you? Just remember in a few weeks you will be walking down main st and all this drama will be a memory! I would just take a look at GF and CR in case they become an option for you, just so you have a knowledge of the layouts etc? I hope this helped?:flower3: I know information would be better! At least we understand you here on the Dis!

Since this thread is getting lengthy I am going to try to keep an index on the first page of some highlights.

Its not meant to be cryptic. I can only tell you what I know and what they have done in the past. I may have an idea in my head how this will all unfold but some stuff I can’t mention right now and I also don’t want to guess. I have no idea if ‘Ohana will even exist in February but then again they may not even start work on the GCH in February. I don’t expect I will know enough to share until closer to the beginning of the year. I have also never booked a place to eat and had it close down so I am not sure how they will handle that. I am sure they will contact you.

I have been saying for months that they would start in late 2013 and there will be something going on in December since they are starting in about a week and all of this is not going to be done until late 2015 or early 2016. I just can't tell you what will be happening in December.

I have been following this thread out of pure curiosity. We stayed at the Poly for the first time just a few weeks ago and fell in love with it! We stayed CL TPV. This was the view from our balcony from left to right:

As you can see, the view was beautiful! We enjoyed sitting on the balcony, taking in the whole extraordinary scene as well as listening to the special sounds that you get at this resort...the horn from the ferry, the train sounds from the park, and the awesome Hawaiian music!

We booked TPV not just to see the castle, but to see the castle amongst the whole beautiful scene. LV is almost as expensive as TPV, so I sort of look at it in the same category as TPV. You book LV to see the lagoon in all its beauty.

So, this is my thought on the effect the construction noise and equipment may have on the LV and TPV rooms:

I sort of equate it to buying an expensive designer dress with a chocolate stain on it. Are the parts of the dress without the stain still lovely? Yes, of course. But, does the chocolate stain sort of "affect" the overall beauty of the dress? Definitely. I wouldn't buy a dress with a chocolate stain on it without a pretty good discount. I do think that construction noise, trucks, and walls will be like a stain on the beautiful "designer" view you get when you book LV or TPV. Just my opinion of course. :) And, of course, none of us really knows what the construction will look like and the noise it will bring, so this is all just conjecture.

But, I would really like to see Disney offer a good discount to those people who book LV and TPV rooms during construction if those views are somehow tainted by the construction. I have faith, or at least hope, that Disney will do the right thing here!

I just keep thinking back to the overall peaceful feeling we got out on our balcony a few weeks ago. And, I am worried that the people who booked exactly the same category as us won't get that same experience.

Good luck to everyone traveling in the next few months! I hope that the impact from the construction will be minimal and that you all have awesome vacations no matter what the construction brings your way! I will keep following this thread to see how it all pans out.

And, a huge shout out to Tikiman...you rock! :cool1:
