OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

I am only on page 11 so this may have been asked. I am running my first 1/2, my DH his first full, since they are on different days can I purchase the goofy cheer squad and split it with him?

Is the cheer squad worth it? I may not get my butt out of bed for him after I am done :0)

Well, for one thing you'd have to share the shirt... :)
"Worth it" really means "worth it *for you* for what you get. We always sign my mom up and she loves it. Your mileage may vary...

My hubby & I are doing the 1/2 marathon. I have seen that they are having a pasta in the parks event on the Thursday night before the running events at Epcot. I was wondering if anyone has ever been to anything like this & if it would be worth going to. I wanna try it out but am having trouble convincing DH to go down Thursday instead of Friday.

Maybe this is a dumb question because my parents never took me camping growing up, but how does a woman use a tree or bush when nature calls? I can understand the guys, but I don't understand how all you women are saying you prefer this option :rotfl:
As long as it has a wide trunk its all good!

keep trying;)

I searched the thread, but have not found these answers. I'd like to do the
5K with my whole family. One part of the website says that its for tweens and teens and the another part says any age. My DD will be almost 9 and my son will be 7. I didn't know if they could only do the Mickey Mile.

My other question is that it says no crutches. Does that mean that disabled folks are not permitted to race? My husband has CP and uses leg braces and crutches to help him walk. They are not the ones you put under your arms-they go around his forearm. I'd love for him to join up but there is no way he can do it without the crutches. If he can't join us, where are the spectators for the 5K?
Thanks for any help!
Jessica

There are kids in the 5K. I did it with two seven-year olds in 2009. (Getting them out of bed on time was the hardest part of the day).

I'm not sure about those questions, but you can email runDisney at wdw.sports.marathon.endurance@disneysports.com or call them at 407-938-3398. Hope that helps!

BunnyFoo: I was running with Mike this morning, and he suggested I contact you with regard to getting signed up for the various WISH events pre and post race in Janary 2012. I am running the 5K and the Half, and I would love to be part of our group's activities. Not sure what they all are, so I am sending you an email to ask for guidance and the like.

Mike mentioned the carb load dinner on Thursday night, the Friday morning breakfast, and said other things may be planned. How do I get on the list for these things (and find out what all is planned)? I will be arriving on Wednesday the 4th and leaving on Monday the 9th (actually it will be me, my wife Christine, and our youngest son Ryan age 13).

The more I read on this board, the more excited I get about this race (and the more nervous...)!

I dont think anything is definate yet, my husband and I would love to meet others for dinner, where are you staying?
It is exciting and nerve tingling, I had an injury a few weeks ago and have got back up to 5 miles without pain so Im back being excitied again rather than just plain worried.

hello everyone!! Haven't been around in a few months, but I offically started training for the full last week!! EEKS!!!!

How is everyone doing and how is your summer going to far!!! :thumbsup2

Hope to reconnect with everyone here!

Nothing is final yet, of course, but I'm pretty sure you can count on the WISH meet at Pop being held again on Friday afternoon.

Thanks John, I never knew that and I thought I had read all the posts:upsidedow.

Can you park there if your not staying?

OrlandoTheBeagle: I am staying at POP -- I heard it was the best place to stay for the Marathon weekend and that WISHers tend to stay there.

I think I am more worried about being ready mentally more than I am about the running. I also never had to worry about what to eat pre and post trainings/races since I have only run 5Ks. So I feel like there is a lot for me yet to learn.

But I trust that the training will get me where I need to be. And I am looking to all of you to help fill in the gaps with helpful tips that will best prepare me for this race.

I never thought in a million years that I would be attempting to run a half marathon. Just goes to show you how life can take you in unexpected directions! :goodvibes

Hi All!

Haven't been on the boards in quite a while. My son and his wife had our first grandchild on May 1st and my daughter got married on June 10th. Now I'm babysitting our granddaughter until mid-August when my nieces have an opening at their daycare.

Anyway, I'm trying to decide if I should sign up for the Goofy. I intended to sign up for it when they had the biggest discount but I came down with heel problems the beginning of April. After an MRI, the official diagnosis was heel bursitis with some plantar fasciitis. Wouldn't let the doctor give me a cortisone shot, but took cortisone orally, did PT as well as rest, ice massage, and stretching on my own. Also doing some alternative therapies such as cranial-sacral treatments. It is definitely getting better although it was aching a little more again this week after my C-S treatment.

I ran the W&D half last year with a 10:15 per mile pace and then did the WDW Half in January with my DH at his pace of 14:00 per mile. Because I was thinking I would do the Goofy in 2012, I started using Galloway's method in March. Not sure if it was the increased walking with more heel strikes that caused the bursitis or not but have once again increased my running intervals to 4:30 and decreased my walking intervals to :30. Considering the heat and humidity in MO, I have been happy with my training pace which has been about 11:15-11:30 per mile. I don't have pain while a run just an occasional ache or twinge in my foot, calf, hamstring or lower back. (I think I'm just so focused on my body that I notice every little thing.) My doctor has given me the okay to enter the Goofy but I'm still a little hesitant to sign up.

I'm doing the W&D Half in October and have no worries about that. Just worried about doing the Half in January and then the Full the next day. Has anyone else with heel bursitis or plantar fasciitis done the Goofy before? Any tips or suggestions?

Right now, I'm just doing 3 days per week running/walking per Galloway's method and will start going to yoga again in mid-August when I'm no longer babysitting my granddaughter.

I know that there are many people who have overcome injuries/disabilities to do the Goofy. I guess I'm just looking for reassurance from my fellow runners....

Thanks!

Here's an argument for you. You need to pick up your race packet on Friday so if you have major flight delays, it could be an issue. That's why we fly down on Thursday. Of course if you're driving my argument won't help! :lmao:
