OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Does anyone know if runDisney offers discounted room rates if you sign up for the race? I know that they did with the Princess, but wasn't sure if this race was the same.

DH and I have decided to do this one, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll both be able to get registered this weekend!:)

They're not really discounted. It's just "host hotels" - which for marathon weekend is all of them. Trust me, you'll find much better discounts on your own.

Thanks for the info! We're planning to stay DVC, but DH has a co-worker/friend who may be coming as well and wanted to try and help them find a good rate, if possible.

Signed up for the little goofy last night--the Donald and the Chip n' Dale. It's going to be a good challenge for me!

Officially registered for the half! I just need to get my stomach problems to cooperate, and all will be well. Following all the doctor's orders to the letter and being a very good girl about hydration. DH is doing Goofy and a friend of ours is also coming with her family and will run the full. Can't wait! Marathon 2010 was one of the very best days of my life. If this is "half" as good as that experience, it will be wonderful. :thumbsup2

Good luck as we all dive into our training plans. Cheers, everyone!

All registered for the half. Booked a room at Pop Century. Very excited. I guess I have to train and show up now. :-)

Okay, so me and my husband are in. He will do the full and I will do the half. We would have both liked to run together, but with kids in tow, we couldn't figure out a way to swing it.

Been trying to build up some good base runs these past few weeks and then will start hard core training this summer.

Nice to meet you all here. I'm Bonnie and DH is Jay (although he wil likely not be on here at all).

Congrats to everyone who has signed up for races. So exciting. LOVE LOVE LOVE marathon weekend!!!

Lets hope for nice weather again this year!!!!

I have a training question I'm hoping someone can help answer! I'm running a full in the fall, so I've already started marathon training. For the first several weeks of my training plan my schedule had me doing two short runs during the week, and a long run on the weekend. I was also doing a day of cross training during the week on a non-running day. This week I noticed that my plan stopped having me do cross training, and instead I'm supposed to do a 30 minute farltek. I know the benefits of farltek runs, but I also know that cross training is important. So here is my dilemma... Should I: 1-replace my x-training day with a farltek run, 2- replace one of my short weekday runs with a farltek run, or 3- add an additional day of running, and keep cross training (so 2 short runs, a farltek run, long run and x-train day.)

The plan I'm looking at using has me doing 4 days of runs but also 2 of XT. Doing some kind of XT, especially strength building, is really important. I wouldn't cut that.

So DH and I are officially signed up for the Goofy Challenge.

When do the "In Training" shirts for 2012 usually go up for sale?

The "in training" shirts were available at the 2011 expo. Chances are that there are none left. You can contact Disney directly, but I would hold my breath if I were you.

Oh, I saw the '11 ones online and read somewhere that they are available at the Expo (for the upcoming year) and then they later sell them online after more stock is in.

Also, I read that someone running the Full Marathon received a whole packet of information in the mail. Is this something that everyone who registers gets? This is my first Disney sponsored race so I'm not sure what to expect.

Also, how early should we book our rooms for that weekend if we want to stay on property? Would be convienant to have free Disney transportation and not have to rent a car, etc.

I registered the day registration opened and haven't received anything yet. I don't know that I've ever heard of that either.

In terms of staying on property...I found a room at All-Star Music as close in as a month to go. It you've got your heart set on a place, sooner is better. But if you just want an on-property room, you can hold off a little. It's not really heavy-tourist season that weekend other than the runners.

Me neither. With the exception of the Houston marathon, I've never received anything in the mail from any race I've run in the past several years. I'm not sure what would happen if you didn't provide Disney an email address when you register because as far as I can tell, they do everything through email. Even the finisher certificates are made available online so you can print them yourself. All this is just fine with me. I'm sure it saves them money (not that those savings seem to show up in the race fees) and it saves a few trees too.

Great! Thank you!

I got my reg email so guess I'm all good. Just need to do the packet pickup the day before.

Does anyone from here do a meetup that weekend? Would be cool to meet other Dis runners!

There has been a WISH meet on Friday for the past few years at POP. I assume once we get closer, we will decide details. It's usually 4:30 or so, and is just a meet and greet with picture taking. Lasts around 30 min, so that people can go off to dinner, etc.

Well, I started this morning, got up at 4:55 am, did my Couch to 5k (LOVE that iphone app!) and feel pretty good right now! Going to walk another 2.2 at lunch.

My first half marathon of the year (second half marathon ever) is in 4 weeks. Due to my recent move (bought a house) Im behind on training. I ran 8 miles the other day and then came down with the flu (still suffering) hope to get on track and get my mileage up there before the day of the race.

Although I have to say doing 8 miles now seems way easier than when I was training for my first half marathon back in the fall. I think running and longer distances are getting easier for me.
