OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

I am doing intervals as well...but have not figured out the best ratio of run to walk yet, I am stuck around a 15 min mile still myself...I am hoping the race will get me excited and pick up my pace a tiny bit I just fear being swept!

I hope your back is feeling better!

As usual, my back seems to be fine. I'll see when I do my short walk/run tonight. I have to break in a new pair of shoes. If I like this model, I'll be buying a second pair and alternating until race day.

I also wore my medal for the Princess Half for a couple of days. I intend for this to be my only marathon. I see more half marathons in my future. However, after listening to everyone talk about the Goofy, I suspect I might get lulled into doing that in my future.

I'll most likely follow suit with everyone else, but do most goofy runners wear all 3 medals, or just the actual goofy medal? I can imagine wearing all 3 would get heavy and loud after awhile.

Last January I saw both the single Goofy and the "all 3" around the parks. Personally, I got a little tired of hearing the clang clang of the people wearing all three but maybe I was just jealous with my single Mickey medal.

This coming January I'll opt for the single Goofy medal. The noise and weight of all three would just not be pleasant for me after the first 10 minutes but to each his or her own.

I guess I must have been one of the real annoying people, :rotfl:, since I wore all three medals plus the 5K Buzz and Woody medallion and a 3.1, 13.1. 26.2 medallion DW made for me for being Dopey.

After all, it was only my 2nd 5K, 2nd half marathon and first full marathon so I went all out with the bling. :thumbsup2

I am a single meal wearer also. Too much noise with the clanking.

Last year was funny. The Perfect 18 and perfectly Goofy folks were given special medal lanyards. It was around 1 in the afternoon on Monday the buzz got around the parks and you would have people approach from across the path to talk. Really surreal.

I hope I like the finisher tshirt (and the size) as that is what I will wear after the race. I'm not a jewelry person...you may catch me wearing my wedding band about twice a year. I did do all three, Princess, DL half and CTC after the race and back to my hotel room. But the clanging was awful.

Soooooo.... anybody wear their medal to Universal? My wife and I are finally getting around to checking out The Wizarding World of Harry Potter this trip. Will be be banished from the park? :)

I probably wouldn't wear it to Universal, only because most rides you'd have to take it off and put it in a locker.

I walked to the bus station at the resort with all 3 medals on and quickly realized I would be putting up with a lot of weight and noise all day if I did that. So, I ran back and just wore the Goofy one the rest of the day. I don't know if I'd wear it to Universal though.

Ack! Good point. I plan to ride Forbidden Journey over and over until I barf, and that medal would be swinging around my head like a flail. So the options are take off the medal, or get dragged to Azkaban.

OK, I have a serious question. If my marathon goes REALLY badly, but I'm still ahead of the sweepers, can I get on a ride and then get back on course, if the parks are open?

To defer, or not to defer...

Looks like I'm not going to be able to finish my first Goofy, due to an ankle injury. I could probably still finish the half.

The question is, do I just do the half and call it a weekend, or do I try to defer. Travel arrangements are all in place. I emailed rundisney, and I have to make a decision today.

The problem with deferring, is that we have a full family trip to Disney scheduled 1 month before 2013 Marathon weekend.

Help!

I think so. I've heard stories of riding EE.

Define badly... Nevermind.. In general, if badly means that the sweeper passes you while on the ride... not a great idea. If you are doing better, and I really expect that you will, then the only park that I would attempts a ride in is AK and then it's because the park is just opening as we pass and rides like Everest are not crowded. I think riding Everest has become a tradition for a few faster folks who are escorting spouses and the like. Since we really do not pass any other ques of rides worth hopping off course for, that would be it. DHS and Epcot are in full swing once we pass, it kind of rules those parks out.

Help!

It's really up to you and only you really know how your ankle feels like under stress.

Coach would probably run this year and then try Sunday morning. But then he does not always follow sound advice. I ran the 06 Goofy on a stress fracture in the lower tibia. I did not know it to be a stress fracture at the time but I know when it occurred in October 05. It was an acute injury that I luffed off as a high level sprain. I ran the half just wanting to finish and actually tweaked the SF when hopping onto a curb under 7 seas lagoon. I ran the rest of the half hard because I was not sure of the ankle. The next morning I awoke and assured Mary that I would only run the first couple to 4 miles and see how it went... bailing at the spectator spot if it did not feel well. I made the end of the race.

All this to say, I would run the half. You then have the option of running the full. If you decide not to, then you are no less a runner, you just listened to your body and said no. Even if you try and fail on either race.... you tried. The only caveat to all this if the doc said a firm no, you will do more damage - then I would listen and follow their advice as closely as possible.

That's fantastic John!
I will hopefully be able to say the same thing this January when I run my 2nd 5k, 2nd half and 1st full!
Any suggestions that you'd like to share for those of us who will be experiencing our 1st marathon while completing the Goofy challenge?

Its really easy.... Trust your training. Nothing more complicated than waking up on Sunday, going through your routine that you have practiced with every long run and then heading out the door.

Since you are running on tired legs, take the first mile slower than normal. Fall back a corral to two if needed but try to run the first mile a minute or so too slow. Chances are that you will hit something between training and race pace. Your goal is to get through the 180 exit corner from Epcot Dr into the Epcot Parking slower than you would do on a normal day. Once in the parking lot its tougher to control pace since the visual references are further away. Then at mile 3 you are in the park and once there you should start trying to hold the pace you want to run.

Your fatigue point will hit earlier on Sunday than expected. Understand that somewhere between turing onto Bear Island Rd at the half and the turn around on Osceola at mile 20.5 you will have to pull a few tricks out of the training tool box. Its normal and you will get through it.

Good luck and wear the medal well.

Great advice, once again. I did Goofy this year with the full being my first. I hit that wall at about mile 21. Hard! I had really run the half hard and was hoping for a PR (2 minutes off, darn it), so I really just wanted to finish the full. Once I got past mile 22, I was fine again. It is really just about how many miles you're putting on those legs during training. I'm sure you'll be fine.
