OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

Welcome Bacon and Bryan.:)

There is a lot of good information from a lot of intelligent runners on here. I'm using a lot of it too, since this is my first time running at WDW. Sounds like you are both doing well with your training! :thumbsup2

My concerns with that is I live in Central Canada and our winters are...well Canadian!! LOL, I am not sure what I am gonna do, other than try and run out doors for as long as I can, and if I can't I will use the elliptical to continue the training.

I'm from Vancouver so although I won't have the cold Canadian winter to deal with, I'm not sure running in chilly rain for the next couple of months won't be too much fun either. Oh well, we'll make it through somehow.

I was just realizing that it's only a little over 2 months until the Marathon. I've had a bad week with being sick and having to work extra hours into the evening several days so I've missed a number of my runs. I need to really get back on track if I want to get my mileage up to being able to do the full marathon comfortably (or at least with a minimal amount of suffering:scared:).

It just really hit me today that relatively speaking there's not much time left and I've really got to stick to my plan. I'll be back out for my long run tomorrow morning.

Happy Halloween!

Thanks again for all of your help, everyone!

I have been running outside and I would always rather run outside than inside on the treadmill, I just didn't know if it was possible to do a long (half marathon length) run on the treadmill. I won't want to be too far from home since (hopefully) our baby will only be a week or two old at that point and my wife doesn't drive.

Crashbb, I also have Reynaud's and can't do a whole lot when it's cold outside. Even temperatures in the low 50's can make my fingers and toes completely white and numb, so I have to be careful when doing outside runs as well. As a matter of fact, it was about 48 here this morning and I walked my dog for a half hour and couldn't feel my fingers...not a lot of fun!

Yup - makes training through the winter very difficult. I used to love winter training, but no so much anymore. It was 3C here this morning, so I had to go to the treadmill. I can deal with fingers better than the toes - really hard to run when you cannot feel half of your foot! I have some nice warm gloves, but I haven't been able to figure out how to make my running shoes warm (even if I use trail shoes or ones with goretex).

I have discovered though, that the smaller of the two gyms in my condo (the three condos in our court share amenities) is very underused and I can easily get my long runs in on Sunday mornings (I ran about 75 minutes today and had the place to myself the entire time).

Have you tried hand warmers and toe warmers? I wear gloves with the disposable hand warmers taped inside them when I know it's going to be really cold, and tape the toe warmers inside my shoes over my feet. It takes them a little while to get going but once they are hot they stay that way for a good four hours or so. Once you get used to them they aren't at all noticeable while running.

Hello everyone.

Our local running store, has a resolution 5k run on Jan 1 and the family is signed up for it too.
Bryan.

I may as well get the creep out now. It was bound to happen. :)

I also live in central Canada (Winnipeg, to be exact.) It's about 4-5 degrees celcius and possibly my favourite running temperature that I've experienced. I do my long runs on Fridays and supplement it with short runs and lifts throughout the week.

I'm also registered for a resolution run 5K because I want the free jacket. I'm guessing your local running store is one of the Running Rooms?

My time at my first half marathon was 2:41, which is what I used for my WDW 1/2 marathon registration. My minute/mile ratio dropped further at a 10-miler when I finished at 1:49. I also did Run for the Cure 5K which I clocked at ~26:30. Yay for improvements!

My plan for this half is to really enjoy myself, the environment I'm running in, and the people I'm running with. I'm not too focused on time.

The hand warmers I find helpful but I have never been able to find toe warmers that kept my toes warm and were comfortable (admittedly, I've only tried about three times). Maybe I should try again.

Hi,

I have just entered the Half Marathon tonight!:)

This will be my first half marathon although I have done a 10k race in Edinburgh in 52mins and go running for 1 hour each night.

I am not looking for a fast time but as long as I complete it in the time I will be pleased.

I will be spending 2 weeks in WDW ( just came back from a week in WDW in early october -2 nights at the Wilderness lodge and 5 nights at the Poly concierge level)

For january I will probably do a split stay ( Coronado or Pop century, the Beach club for the nights of the race ( so I can go back through Epcot) and maybe the wilderness lodge. I bought an annual pass in October so might as well get some value.

I am slightly worried about the 550am start! and hope the weather is warmer than I think it was last year but am looking forward to it.

Regards

That is so creepy weird! LOL
I am south of Winnipeg.
We are all taking in the resolution run, for the bright orange jacket, actually saw it in Saturday. My plan is to run it, but the family will walk it.

I am rather new to running, this will be my first winter running season, And yup its cool out there today, I need to go for a run soon. Any Tips for winter running will be greatly appreciated!

My plan for the 1/2 Marathon is to enjoy it too. Last Jan if you would have told me I was gonna be running a 1/2 I would have laughed....now if you would have told me I was gonna run it in Dinsey.

You get use to running in the cold - I've run in the winter for two years now. The idea of getting out there and running in -15C weather still doesn't appeal to me but once I start running I don't really notice it anymore. There was only one time I ran indoors. I did 25K on a treadmill - not fun or pretty. Anytime I can get out, I'll take that over the treadmill. You have to be a little more flexible with your running schedule - you might swap your long run day if you know it's going to be cold and snowy. And you definitely won't run as fast. I'd say just be careful running over snow because your ankles and easy slip and twist. And make sure you get some warm gloves and a balaclava for those REALLY cold days. :goodvibes

This is technically my first winter running season as well. I did C25K last fall and became dependent on treadmills. I did the Salvation Army 5K for fun last December and my experience told me I had a lot to learn about running outdoors/with people around me. I'm in North Winnipeg but I don't like our sidewalks so I run around Assiniboine Park Fridays and Sundays. Good luck with your training leading to the 1/2!

Edit: I would say close to 80% of my running clothes (especially fall and winter) were bought either in Albertville or Minneapolis. They are much cheaper there than Running Room and City Park Runners on Portage. The price difference offsets the cost of gas and hotel for a weekend. I'll probably buy some more stuff in Orlando.

That is the same experience I have had. Unless the road is a sheet of ice or the snow banks are too high to be safe at intersections I avoid the treadmill. A trip to the runner's store and some winter running gear is a necessity for those of us in the north. I've been out in -11 (F) and was warmed up after about a mile. The wind chill was 34 yesterday and I was still in shorts.

The key for new winter runners is you want to be cool or even cold for your first mile or so because you will warm up. If you walk out the door and feel warm chances are after a mile or so you'll be too warm.

Wow, there's a couple Winterpeggers out there eh?! You guys should have a wonderful winter running experience. I grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and have fond memories of running to school on the top of snowbanks!

I've joined the YMCA so I can run indoors and cross train and learn to swim. I am thinking that our 'Fall' is more like the Florida 'Winter' so running outdoors now is similar.

We should have a Canadian Wishers meet up at the park for the 1/2. I'd love to see some other Northern Folks!!

Carolyn

I cannot believe you Winnipeg runners! I grew up pretty evenly divided between Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, and Calgary and I can't imagine running through the winter in any of those places! The memory of my contacts freezing to my eyelids is just too fresh in my mind! :lmao:

I've only been in Seattle for 3 years but I already have gotten West Coast blood. The temperature dipped below freezing during my 20 mile training run last year and I thought I was going to die! :rotfl:

Wow! How exciting to read that Canada will be well represented.

It was a balmy 45 degrees and I really enjoyed my hour out in it today. Happy training everyone!

That sounds so nice!

It was 100 degrees here today- yes in November. :scared1:Supposed to be 100 again tomorrow. This makes it hard to get runs in! Just miserable. We had fall here for a minute. Then suddenly, it seems to be the heat we never did get this July.

I just wanted to mention a deadline for WISH racing team Hats and Visors.
I need the minimum numbers to place the order so people can have their Headweats before the January Races. If you are on the edge about getting one, now is the time - another order won't be done for another year.
Go to the thread, read the first post and go to the order form to place your order.

Thanks!

Thanks for doing the whole ordering thing.

But I just can't. Lime green is just NOT a color I EVER wear. *shudder* (Heck, I even traded the lime green post-it notes I was given at work with someone who had another color!) Sorry whoever decided on it for the DIS boards. But I will always be incognito. ;)

I didn't believe my friend that you're having a heatwave in CA, but you just confirmed it for her. When I ran on Weds I was really cold when I started. I stopped for a minute to get a rock out of my shoe, and there was steam coming off my body!! Although I started runnng in July with plenty of 90-100+ degree days, and I'll take the cold days over that. Stay hydrated and stay safe!!

PS. I made it ten miles on Weds. It was the first time I hit the double digits. Looks like there's a chance I can actually do this.
