Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

Cripey, I don't know if you saw this, but I read on the restaurant boards that The Wave was testing a new lunch buffet and because of it, their regular lunch menu was scaled back. I'm not sure if they will still be having it at the end of Sept., but just wanted to mention it.
The buffet was little pricier than the entrees but had a nice selection of things like salads, chicken, pasta, etc. It got a good review from the person who posted it.

Here is the link if you want to see it:

No, I hadn't read anything about that! Thanks...I'll go check it out!

ETA: UGHHH! I checked it out...very disappointing! :( I really liked the offerings on the menu before...alot of fresh, seasonal stuff. I'm thinking we may be revising our ADR for that afternoon now. Thanks so much for the heads-up!!!!

Hmmm, I'm not sure...I guess it depends on how your body recovers between runs. For me, I can tell tapering does me good. My legs feel rested on race day and appreciate the break and my energy level is sky high by race day because of the taper too...so it works for me. I think it also depends on how confident you are mentally about doing 10 miles. Some people need to keep their distance up before a race to really feel like they can do it. I never go all the way to the full race distance in training though. If I've kept to the plan for the most part, I trust it and it's worked for me so far.

I run three days a week.. day one is always my best day. It comes after taking 2 days off. Then two days later I always have my worst run. I can feel my legs are tired, and so my time is never as good. Then two days later it is like I am ok with running again and do a better than the previous two days. Point is... I think I might need a good couple days before the race to let myself recover. Mentally, I think I am finally there. I am sure I can go the entire 10 miles. My run partner does the walk run method so I will be doing that with her. Today's run was almost 5.60 miles. no walking... so I figure that add in some walks and I can't imagine I won't be able to finish the 10miles.
So... point to my ramblings is I will follow what you are doing and taper..at least that last week. :goodvibes

I'm trying to plan our pre-race meals - and get reservations which you all know is a sport of it's own kind at WDW.

How are all of you planning your meals - specifically the night before and the day of? I don't want to eat too heavy, yet we still have to eat enough to get us through the race. I want our big meal of the day on the day of the race to be around 1:00 ish. With maybe a small snacky meal later in the day before the race time? I know many "carb up" but I always crave protein. Trying to look for just the right meal of carbs/protein and find a restaurant that has an opening still this late in the game.

I have really struggled with this too. Even the day before has me a bit nervous. Do I eat a lot the day before? (we have 2 buffets planned) Sometimes when I eat a big meal the night before a big run, I feel great an other times maybe a bit more sluggish Then the day of, I will be getting up early to go to the kids race with dd... grab a bagel or something of that nature for both of us... then rest the rest of the day. I have a 6pm adr for dinner... but think now that is too late. I should cancel it, don't you think?

We originally had reservations at Mama Melrose's on Friday evening, but when I checked the menu I couldn't see anything "neutral" to fit the bill. So we're going to go to the "build your own pasta bar" at the resort and will have something simple like pasta with marinara. Will probably have pancakes for breakfast after the 5K on Saturday (I would never turn down a good pancake, especially on race day!).

Is anyone doing the 5K too? I will also likely have a smaller snack around 1:00or 2:00 to tide me over. :goodvibes

You've all posted so much amazing info today - too many responses to multi-quote! Thank you especially for all of the nutrition advice. I don't have an overly sensitive stomach, but it has rebelled in the past and I definitely don't want that to happen this time! The sport beans almost did me in at the half, so I'm going to try the other things you suggested (a few days before the race, of course!) :thumbsup2 Being a night race, though, it's good to have the day to graze unlike those "get the bus at 3:00" morning races!

I need some advice on what to do for our long runs for the next two Saturdays. This Saturday calls for 3 miles, which is fine, but the next calls for 11 miles. The problem is that on the 11 mile Saturday, our weekend is already full and there is no way that we're going to be able to fit those 11 miles in. So, I was wondering if there would be any harm in switching the weekends and doing the 11 this weekend and the 3 next. Will this be okay?

Does anyone know of any websites selling villain inspired tech shirts or other running gear? It was so easy to find princess stuff for the Princess half, but I guess Villains are not too popular... I want to be the Evil Queen from Snow White.

Getting mine from RawThreads.org. Ordered Sea Witch on Monday and checking the mail every day. :). Oh, and for Evil Queen check out SparkleSkirts! They have an awesome skirt coming out. You can see it in Facebook.

Starting to stress... my miles are nowhere near where they should be...

Oh well, I'm not going for a specific finish time, I will be happy to finish, which I am fairly certain I will. I'm just siking myself out :worried:

The original lunch menu looks great! We've done breakfast and dinner at The Wave, but the lunch menu always appealed to me the most, we just never got a chance to do it. I wonder if there's a way to find out if they will have the buffet when you go, it would be a shame to miss it if the buffet is just a trial deal and they still have the actual lunch at that time. My DS can't wait to try it, but I get that it might not be what works for you on a race day.
I hope you find something that works for you that you will enjoy~ or that they go back to the luncheon menu!

I think what we decided to do is keep the ADR at the wave, get there early and find out if it's regular menu or buffet...because, like you said, I don't want to miss it if the buffet was just a trial because I really like the regular menu. If its still buffet, then we'll let them know to cancel us and just go to DTD...maybe Wolfgang Puck Express or Fresh A Peel...something like that.

I'm planning to eat a semi large breakfast, and then a late lunch at Kona Cafe for an Ahi Tuna sandwich on pineapple bread with sweet potato fries, mmm. I've had it before and have done a few trials of eating grilled fish sandwiches to be sure it settles.

We also picked it so we can hang out at the bar after so my husband and his friend can start their Disney bar hoping while I take a nap and get ready to run. When I go back to hotel around 4, they are taking a bus from MK to the Boardwalk for ESPN and Big River Grill, then to DtD for Bongos and Raglan Road, then taking the boat to POR to check River Roost, and taking that bus to the race. Hopefully they make it to HS!

Then I plan to do my usual pre-race "breakfast" of a granola bar, bagel with peanut butter, and a banana two hours before the race. I may bring extra fruit snacks just in case I do get hungry than normal on the course, though!

Everyone's talk about Disney food has got me waning it now! Haha. I am actually going to buy my food off property and then store it in the fridge. We are staying at Art of Animation in one of the suites so we will have a fridge. Unfortunately I have to immediately start training for the goofy in january so I don't even get to reward for this run. My reward is a 2.5 hour run on Sunday sometime.

Usually during race weekends, the value resorts at least offer "runner friendly" meals. They do for marathon weekend, not sure if they will for this race. It's not extravagant but if anyone is worried about what to eat, you could probably call and see if they are offering that option?

Some people including myself have gotten caught in the mileage trap, thinking more is better. The truth is more mileage is better only up to the point where you can achieve your potential. After that, each additional mile only increases your injury risk.

Speaking of food, I hope there's decent real food to eat after the race during the party, not just popcorn, etc. I'll be hungry! I made the mistake of eating the wrong thing before the Expedition Everest Challenge in May thinking it's a short race, but I won't make that mistake again, so I'll be ready to eat something with protein. (Besides a Cliff Bar, lol.)

I'm sure you'd be fine to switch your long runs. Both Jeff Galloway and Hal Higdon say that beyond anything else, you must do what works best for you. There's nothing worse than having a long run scheduled and trying to squeeze it in (it stresses me out completely and it's always a bad run - I think I run too fast because I'm so pressed for time :(). I'm going to do 11 miles this week too and then start a very gradual taper.

Have a great run!

Thanks SO much for the advice! I feel a bunch better now! Now that the race is so close, I'm really starting to stress!:(

I posted this over on the main WISH board, but thought I'd ask here too:

I have the Garmin Forerunner 210 and LOVE it. However, since my long runs have gotten a little longer, I've discovered a problem...it seems a though I can only go up to 99 intervals, which will only get me to about 7 miles. (Yes, I'm slow.) Does anyone know a way around this? I've searched the internet trying to find a soltuion (if there is one), but have had no luck. I figured that surely someone here would know! Thanks in advance!

well, maybe we could find out what's going to be open if they'd ever SEND THE FINAL RACE INSTRUCTIONS!!!! SO much for them being avaialable one month prior to the event! :rolleyes2

I know, right? I'm also hoping bag check will be good and that they list COLD water and sports drinks available on the course and post-race. ::yes::

No kidding!! I'm checking the site every other hour...I'm most anxious to know what the situation for the CM's working at DHS that day is going to be, if the can park in their regular CM parking...se my husband works at the Backlot Tour and he'll be scheduled to work that day, so I'm wondering if he can just leave the car there since both of us are running the race. I know that this info will not be provided in the final race instructions and will probably won't be provided to the CMs until a week before...the anticipation is killing me.

Does anyone know the capacity of this race? I know it's not anywhere near the size of the WDW 1/2, but I'm curious. Well really, I just want to know how far back in the pack I'll end up being, lol!
