Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

My run partner doesn't think they will be super strict about the sweeping. I think the idea being if they have characters out they must anticipate people lingering. However.. you all are kinda making me think that if we are in the last corral and we stop for a character we very well may get swept.

They may or may not be strict - but to put it in perspective, I found this blog a while ago, and it details about getting swept at the Princess this year: http://runaroundsara.blogspot.com/2012/02/disney-princess-half-marathon-2012-race.html

Again, please don't stress yourself out about the sweepers at this point, you still have 3 months to train!! I'm sure you will be fine :thumbsup2

Oh, I read it... ohhh, now I feel sick. :rolleyes2. I keep trying to tell myself that if I had to WALK the entire 10 miles I could at a 15 minute pace. Right now, with a 5 minute warm up walk and a 5 minute cool town walk... I do about 3 miles in 30 minutes. I saw where she wrote she was only a head of the sweepers by 1 minute, but what was her pace? Does being in the last corral make a difference as to chance of getting swept? In other words... do the sweepers start at the end of everyone else and "bring up the rear" at a 16 minute pace? Hmm... if that is so, I need to really get a 10k in for a time submission. I think I would just cry for weeks if I got swept. :sad2:

3 miles in 30 mins? Doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about to me. :confused3 That's a 10 min/mile average and the sweepers start after the last person crosses and will sweep those not maintaining a 16 min/mile average. At a 10 min mile, you aren't even close to that.

Yeah, but I KNOW I could not keep that up for 10 miles. I would die... and yesterday with the humidity up... I was slower... I need to increase my distance while keeping my pace under 15 minutes/mile.

So being in a close to start corral would afford you some time? I notice the person in that blog lost her minute advantage when she stopped to use the potty. In theory..even at her pace (whatever it was) if she had stopped, but had been further up in starting...the pacer would be further behind?

that's correct...there is definitely some cushion with time the further up in the corrals that you are. if you're at a 10 min mile average now that you've been able to maintain for 3 miles, and you keep up with your training consistently, I really really don't think you'll end up being that much slower for 10 miles on race day....maybe a minute or two per mile for the longer distance and factoring in some heat and humdity which is a real possibility....and you'll still be well ahead of the sweepers. I'm sure you'll be fine. if it'll make you feel better on race day, make sure you arrive to the stating area as early as you can and get as close as you can to the front of your corral...that'll give you a little extra cushion, though I really don't think you'll need it.

Oh honey! That is an awesome pace!! I'm aiming for that kind of pace for my 10K's this summer!! If you can get in a 10K this summer, and get in a better corral, that will help buy you some time!

For the Princess, I had submitted a 10K time of 1:06.30 which got me into Corral B - I ended up finishing in just under 3 hours :lmao: There were people from Corrals D & E passing me at the finish line :lmao: As long as you can submit a time, it doesn't matter on race day if you can compete at that pace, the pace I submitted indicated an 11.34 pace, but in reality on race day I ended up with a pace of 13.54 because I stopped a LOT of times for pictures and potties ;)

Don't stress too much, I just had posted that blog to put into perspective that they do indeed sweep people. I am sure you will be fine  Remember we have 3 whole months til the race!!

If I could do a 3 mile short run in 30 minutes, I wouldn't be the slightest bit worried. I read the blog that someone posted. Kudos to the author for having the courage to blog about that. No way would I be able to relive the account of getting swept for all the world to read. And I can tell ya this, too: if I knew I was just a minute ahead of the sweepers, you wouldn't be able to drag me to a potty break. I'd hold it til the end or drip on myself. lol

I hope you are right. This running thing is all new to me. I have never done a single race. My run partner is as OCD of a planner as I am...so I am sure she will be eager to get to the front of whatever corral we end up in...so I will use that trick.

True, we have 3 months of training left. I plan to do a 5 k next month...then to do a 10k probably in late August..but preferably early September. How much time to I have until I can no longer submit a time from the 10k? Is early September too late?

Yes, I wondered immediately when reading if that was the smartest choice... but.. when ya gotta go.. you gotta go

And as for 3 miles... well... that first mile I do quite well... the second I am slower... and by the time I am done I swear I am walking faster during my cool down than my last bit of running.(I need a slow mo emoticon) So while I can do about 3 miles in roughly 30 minutes... I am sure that adding a 4th mile would mean adding much more than just 10 minutes. I have yet to train a distance longer than 3 miles.... well, I have walked longer... but

Never too late! I think the cut-off for emailing it in is August 1, but anything you do after that, print out your results and take it to the expo, and they can change your corral right there :thumbsup2

Oh no! You guys are scaring me with all this sweeper talk! I think I would bawl my eyes out if I got swept!

I'm brand new to running and just finished my very first race (a 5K) last weekend. I ran the whole time and finished in 35:00. Not super fast, but I was pretty happy with it for my first race. Now I just need to crank up the distance! Just? :rotfl:

Next month I hope to do a 5k and have that be my time so :thumbsup2 Something tells me though with the heat kicking in... I will probably not make it in that. Time will tell though. I have several weeks to still train.

BTW.. Washington? State or DC?

Good luck on your 5K! You'll do great! Washington State! I'm in Olympia. Where are you? Yeah, the weather has stayed so cool here this Spring, it's been nice for running. I'm a little nervous to run some place warm!

Very small world. :goodvibes My dd's husband is from Olympia. We are just a bit farther north in Enumclaw.:goodvibes

I am with you being nervous about warmer temps. I have rather enjoyed the cool temps. It helps me to not DIE when I run. :rotfl:

Just a suggestion for you based on what my trainer has told me over the last couple of years....your goal on your runs should be negative splits...in other words, your first mile should be your slowest and each one after that a little faster, with your last mile being the fastest. When analyzing my runs, she always suggests making a conscious effort to take it really slow on your first mile and pick it up, little by little, from there. I'd suggest maybe trying that and see if your last mile starts to feel a little better for you after a while. It's a good thing to get in the habit of doing too because on race day you'll be so jacked up on adrenaline and nerves that you'll want to fly out of your corral in a sprint and you'll need to know how to mentally talk yourself down from that, stay focused, and go out at an easy pace so that you have the energy to really finish strong!

If you train for a 15 min mile, which is pretty easy with a walk/jog combo, you shouldn't have to worry really about being swept.

Great suggestion!!! I will try that next time I go out for a run. Today's run wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. It was my longest run without walking time... but overall I wasn't as fast as I would have liked. I ended up with a side ache about half way through... yuk.

We're up on Whidbey Island. We've been having fabulous running weather, haven't we? Nice and cool......

It'll be a shocker to run in heat and humidity, for sure. I run with a hydration pack here. I fully plan on packing it along....

So funny and cool there are several of us from this area going down for this!

I will have to look into a hydration pack. :thumbsup2

Yay! Another Washingtonian! :goodvibes Yeah, we sure have been spoiled by this cool weather.

Anyone else following the Disney training schedule? I was a little nervous about inceasing my distance from 3 to 4 miles yesterday, but I'm happy to report that it went really well! Didn't feel much different than 3 miles and I was able to maintain my pace. Gives me hope that maybe I can do this thing! :woohoo:

With the times many of you have been posting, this far out with more time to train, don't even give getting swept a second thought! Really! Put your mind at ease! Now my behind is a different story. I just want to cross the finish line, even if I'm the very last person to do it. I just did 7.1 miles and was really disappointed with my time, I've been training and working out religiously. I did it in 121 mins. which is at at 17mm. I'm mostly at a 16mm average pace so far. But when I got home I noticed it was 86 degrees, so I was ok with it (for now). I'm gonna be working my hardest every day to be able to get my time down so I'm not running from the Goofy sweeping bus!
Disney races are SO much fun!:cheer2:
