*Official* DWTS 2012 Thread

I know we've discussed this in past seasons, and IIRC quite a few Dis-ers agree with Maks. I don't though.

BTW, I found the exact quote:

"Derek Hough has been very supportive of his personal career on the show," Maksim said in an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America Wednesday. "When you say judges have been generous, with all due respect, if I had Nicole Scherzinger followed by Jennifer Grey followed by Ricki Lake, I probably would not be very upset with the judges either."

Seems like quite a slam not only to Derek, but to his own partners as well, at least if you ask me.

And I have to say, I find it funny that Maks complained about Derek being partnered with Jennifer Grey on the season he was partnered with Brandy. Maybe it's just me, but if it were a school yard pick, I would have expected Brandy to be chosen before Jennifer.

Same with this season, would Ricki Lake really have been your top pick going in?

Here's the list:

Elisabetta Canalis
Kristin Cavalleri
Nancy Grace
Ricki Lake
Chynna Phillips
Hope Solo

Again, maybe It's just me, but I didn't expect Ricki to do as well as she has, and I would have pegged Hope for having more potential.

Coaching, choreography, age, ability, motivation, personality, popularity, etc all play into it. I honestly don't think it's always easy to predict who will do well before the season even starts.

Anyway, while I can understand Maks's frustration, and maybe even agree with some of his points (to some extent) everyone on DWTS knows what they're getting into. It's a competition, you're judged, and some of the comments can be harsh, because ultimately it's all about entertainment and ratings.

Along those lines, I think Maks has made some comments that are out of line, but he's getting a lot of press, and isn't the Hollywood motto "any publicity is good publicity"?

In answer to your question - bolded - for me that would be HELL YES, they would have been my number 1 choice!!!!!!

Why - because in your examples - Jennifer, Nicole, and Rikki - all 3 of them have already proven - from example of their work in their choosen professions - that they know how to learn and perform choreography. It may not have been ballroom, but it was dancing.

They know the dance terminolgies. They have most of the basics covered. Most of the others have ZERO clue what the pro's are talking about.

Even if it's been years, since they may have used those skills, once you get yourself back in the studio and working on dancing for a few days, your body remembers and it all comes back to you. You may have to work a bit harder to do the steps and you may be a bit more sore afterwards, but you still have the advantage of prior knowledge and experience.

I'd take whichever star had advantages that I could, over a novice every time.

I think that even his "positive" comments can be demeaning, especially when he gushes about how hot and sexy some of the women danced calling them minxes. sex kittens, etc.

I totally agree!

Enough with the name calling! It's totally uncalled for in professional judging. I'm sorry, but I find him to be a horrible judge.

I personally think that these people need to grow up. The judges need to be more professional and any critiques should have been handled privately. I doubt that all of this is for ratings at least since I understand that DWTS is quite popular.

Nancy has her fans from her own show. Plus, I was watching Showbiz Tonight, on HLN, and they interviewed her and showed her DWTS footage, too, since it is on the same network. Don't know if they do that every night. But, HLN is obviously plugging for her. I wouldn't be surprised if she also showed up on Dr Drew's show. "Nancy tell us your opinion on the Michael Jackson's doctor's case. . . BTW, you did great on DWTS. Here's a clip of you last night. . ." :rolleyes1

:lmao: I was right! Nancy was on Dr. Drew's last night. He didn't even bother hiding the fact that he was doing a shameless plug for Nancy. He told the audience that he wants Nancy to be able to plop the mirror ball trophy on his desk there on the show. After discussing Michael Jackson's Dr. for a bit, they brought on Tristan.

I wonder how many other HLN TV shows Nancy can be on? ;) If she wins, will she be one of the headline news, making the news crawl?

Actually I think Bruno needs to stop calling people Ewoks, penquins, etc. Maks had had enough and I don't blame him in the least. It's time the judges starting judging fairly and leave the popularity contest up to the audience vote.

I think that even his "positive" comments can be demeaning, especially when he gushes about how hot and sexy some of the women danced calling them minxes. sex kittens, etc.

Maks explained himself during the results show.

Bruno's penguin comment was that he looked like a little penguin hopping about trying to be a bid bad bird of prey. It was a slam. Maybe he doesn't mean to be MEAN, but his comments are mean and certainly not meant in a positive way.

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 Yes, to all 3 comments above.

You need a list of all the partners Derek has had over the years compared to Maks. Derek has always had the younger, more fit, and the one with some dance experience.

You really can't compare Jennifer Grey to Brandy. Jennifer DID have extensive ballroom/partner dance experience with one of the best dancers in the world, for Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayzee. She had to learn about 3 partner dances. She was way ahead in that department, learning things like, "This is MY dance space. This is YOUR dance space. You don't go into my dance space." And "Don't step down on the heel." Of course there was the "Ka-chung. . .Ka-chung. . . [Patrick beating his fingers on the heart.] You have to feel the music inside."

Brandy only had one waltz dance for Cinderella.

You're not a newbie to our DWTS threads. You know we've complained in the past how Derek always gets the best star dancers. Some finals, it's not even worth watching because he's such a shoe it to win,

and he has.

Also as Joel Grey's daughter I am sure she was around dance all her life. She also studied dance and acting in school.

Since I'm stuck at the airport with nothing else to do anyway, here it is:

Derek
5 Jennie Garth
6 Shannon Elizabeth
7 Brooke Burke
8 Lil’ Kim
9 Joanna Krupa
10 Nicole Sherzinger
11 Jennifer Grey
13 Ricki Lake

Maksim
2 Tia Carrere
3 Willa Ford
4 Laila Ali
5 Mel B
7 Misty May Treanor (injured)
8 Denise Richards
9 Debi Mazar
10 Erin Andrews
11 Brandy
12 Kirstie Alley
13 Hope Solo

It doesn't seem like Maksim is being stuck with partners who have no potential, at least IMO. :confused3

Brandy attended Hollywood High Performing Arts Center, and while I'm sure her focus was vocal performance, I'm also reasonably sure she was involved with at least some dance performance. I would be shocked if Cinderella was the first time she ever danced on stage.

Not to mention Jennifer was 50-ish and had all kinds of physical limitations while Brandy was 30-ish and in great shape.

Again, I know it's a matter of opinion, and I certainly don't expect everyone to agree with me, but in a school yard pick pre DWTS season I still say I would have chosen Brandy before Jennifer.

Yep, like I said I know we've discussed it before, and I know a lot of people think Derek gets the best partners... doesn't mean I have to agree. ;)

After seeing him go all the way with Jennifer (although I hated all her kvetching) and working with Ricki, I am starting to agree with you. I am starting to see that Derek is the key. He, like Cheryl, brings out the best in their stars. He challenges them right to the edge. My goodness ... if he can get a postpartum Brooke Burke to win, the man can truly do anything. LOL, I just looked back at my comments on the Season 7 Finale and I *loved* Brooke: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=28907493&postcount=942. The man IS a genius! :rotfl:

I do think that Ricki was the prime pick from this season and I mentioned her dance experience with Hair Spray but I think that Hope, as an Olympic athlete, also had a good chance. IIRC Olympic athletes are 50-50 for winning. They know what it's like to practice, practice, practice and what kind of dedication it takes to win. Too bad that Hope is too strong in the upper body (IMO). Natalie Coughlin (who we LOVE in this house) was the same way and didn't get very far either. The two Olympians who won are both skaters.

From what you have quoted above who each Pro has had....Maks had some pretty darn "good Looking" and "fit" partners. I think his attitude is what also pushes people away. He is the only one that is really like that. I think Tony Dovolani once or twice shot back at the judges but immediately said he was sorry.

Maks is a bit of a hothead nots saying he isn't talented or handsome, but sometimes he goes overboard.

I'm sorry but Hope is not a great dancer, part of that however, is I think because she doesn't pratice enough. Len even mentioned that to her a few weeks ago. Another PP said it as well Athletes usually do very well on the show because they know about practice and discipline....Hope doesn't seem to have that. I feel Hope is more of the problem and NOT Maks.

But for him to make that comment about Derek just shows how he is jealous because he has never won, came soclose many times but no trophy....yet

It looks like Maks and Derek partners are pretty well equal, I think Maks just like to be a sore loser

After seeing the side by side lists, I agree with Robin. We always thought that Derek is a great teacher and really knows how to choreograph to his partners' strengths. But, other than Jennifer Grey, who I'll get to, it doesn't look like he had the one shoe in. It is definitely the way he teaches, then.

Maks had Mel B, who did well. Didn't Misty May do well too, until she got injured?

As for Brandy having dance training at the Hollywood High Performing Arts Center, I seriously doubt she had partner dancing. Until recently, only places like Arthur Murray still taught ballroom dancing. Brandy most likely had Broadway style, jazz, modern and ballet available to her.

There reason why I keep stressing partner dancing is that when I watch the Olympic figure skaters and ice dancers, very few of the ones that compete singly, are able be successfully competitive as a pairs skating team. All the pros have said that dancing with a partner is completely different. There is a difference in footwork, timing, getting in sync with a partner.

I assume it is similar with partner dancing, too. Especially with the woman dancing backwards. Jennifer is the only one who has had 3 previous dances like that. In my opinion. :)

Yep, like I said I know we've discussed it before, and I know a lot of people think Derek gets the best partners... doesn't mean I have to agree. ;)

Hmm, :scratchin this is the second time in a couple pages that someone mentioned that to me. Perhaps I am not saying "in my opinion" enough anymore.

I always like the TV show threads here at the DIS. Unlike some other threads here which can really get nasty & out of hand, :duck: we've always been able to agree or disagree on who we like, don't like, etc., and everyone knows (that even if the other person is wrong in their opinion, :rolleyes1 ;) ) we're just discussing a fun TV show. :woohoo: I hope I haven't been coming across as bashing other people over the heads with my opinions. Most of us go from DWTS to The Bachelor/ette each season. :grouphug: :goodvibes You gals are what make these types of shows fun! :yay:

Brooke speaking..the SCARIEST :scared1: thing on tv tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maks is making that Werewolf look GOOD!(I think he's a ww))

Ug. Karina's costume was THE WORST. OK ... Bristol's gorilla outfit was worse, but that naked skeleton costume is a close second. Plus, she seemed to have a real problem with it. I agree with Mr. Cranky Pants, it was not JR's best by a long shot.

Tristan awesome, Nancy...Awful. Ouch, if it was just Tristan, veeeeeeery cool!

I had to step out for a bit. Are the judges being nicer tonight?

I thought that was a stiff, most unemotional tango for Cheryl & Rob. :confused3 Were they being nice because Kim announced her divorce today?
