Official Disneyland ½ Marathon & 5k

The way I see it, if I finish the race and get a medal, I succeeded. I don't care so much about time. I signed up this year in part because I need the motivator kicking me in the butt to drive to the gym instead of home after work.

Now that said, I'm actually questioning whether or not I want to continue doing 1/2 marathons after completing the Coast to Coast. I may drop down to the 5K as I'm hoping it will provide the motivation to exercise, but not at the distances required for a 1/2.

My daughter is pushing me to do the WDW half again in January. I don't know what I want to do at this time. We're 50 and I'll tell you, the aches and pains just don't go away as fast anymore - especially when you have arthritis to begin with. We're signed up for the Tower of Terror 10 miler right after this Disneyland 1/2. We'll see how it goes I guess. I don't want to give it all up as it is good exercise for us, but I certainly understand where you're coming from.

How long have you been running? 8mm isn't bad. If you can run that for a short time, the given time, more races and speed work you could probably bring your average down closer to that number.

Hi Reep -

Thanks for the advice. I started running in April of 2010 but I was a fatty at that point. I have only seriously started training for distance running since about June of 2011. These days on the treadmill I can run 8mm for almost two miles before I can't take it any longer. But I generally DON'T do treadmill running, which is maybe my problem. I like to run outside, and Oregon has hills, so my average after a long run is usually 12mm because there are moments of uphill fast walks. But get me on a straight stretch of road and sometimes I find myself doing 9mm no problems.

It's cool hearing about the more mature ladies doing speed work. I definitely want to run well into my 40s and 50s (and beyond) and while i think 1/2 marathons are my comfortable race distance (for the time being) I would like to get into a faster, consistent pace. I should probably look into what "speed training" consists of. Because I have no idea. I've never really consulted any experts throughout my running journey. I just run.

TO EVERYONE:

I stumbled across a really embarrassing photo yesterday and had the courage to show my husband. Because we're all in this thing to be healthy, I feel strangely comfortable sharing this picture with all of you. To the left is me at my fattest. 220 lbs, size 18 pants, 28 years old, never exercised. To the right is me just a few weeks ago at a family reunion. 145 lbs, size 8 pants, 32 years old, a runner. Not bad, eh?

I didn't hit my marathon and half marathon PRs until 44 (maybe I'll say 48 in another couple weeks).

If you can run 8mm for two miles, I would guess that with a slow build up in speed work and miles you could come close to that for a half marathon eventually. You can find any intermediate training program for good speed work suggestions. Good job on the weight loss.

That's great about the weight loss. Mines been roller pasting myself but I also took up running to help get it off. I was around 300 when I started losing weight and about 240 when I started running. I'm about 260 right now (the foot is not helping).

On a different note my foot results came back. I have a staph infection. Lovely (note the sarcasm). I just hope that the antibiotic take care of it since these are notoriously difficult to get rid of.

ETA: ok now I'm just plan mad at my doctor. I took a look at the results. I have not one buy TWO different types of staph! TWO! Why me?

That's horrible. Are you still going to try for next weekend or is that out? Hope it gets better in time!

It appears to be getting better. But it's still healing some. My first real indication about next weekend will come this weekend when I lace up for the first time since this all started. If it still bothers me but not a lot some I'll limit it to a short run and keep plans in check. I don't really think it will hurt much but who knows.

Good luck!!!!

Thanks!

Some good news today did come. I am playing musical chairs with my classes right now trying to get into physics with a teacher I like and am familiar with. Class is currently full but we're on friendly terms (more so than me with most teachers of mine) so I think he'll let me move into his class. If that happens that means I no longer have a Thursday evening class and will be able to catch the last flight to LA (will have to leave for the airport straight from class but it will be so worth it)! Which means less of a hassle Friday morning even if we aren't staying on property that night. And even better Mom has all ready said she'll drop me off at one of the random parking areas so I can walk to DCA to pick up our WOC fastpasses and probably a FP for another ride as soon as we get there.

Woohoo! Musical chair version of classes is officially complete! I am now in the physics class I want! Which also means we are now flying in to LA and checking in a night earlier than planned!

Hey all! Are there any meet ups planned for people traveling solo for race weekend? I'll be there Thur night - Monday night. I'll be at the Jeff Galloway meet up Friday morning and then the expo and of course the race Sunday. Looking for others to hang out with at the parks and such. Thanks! Have a great race/weekend all! :)

Just wanted to give a heads up ~ there are a couple of meet ups for next weekend that were planned on the WISH side. Friday is at Trader Sam's at 6:45. Saturday is at 4:30 in DTD. It's by the fountain on the tram side b/w World of Disney and Blink/Wet Seal.

Congrats on getting in the Galloway meet up! It was full before I even saw the Disney Parks Blog post. Sounds SO cool! Will you write here afterward and let us know how it went?

Has anyone here walked directly to the corrals from one of the Katella hotels? I'm wondering if you can walk down non-race side of Disneyland Drive, past the start line and enter the corrals there, rather than having to around through the stage area?

I only post here sporadically, can I still attend the meet ups? Or is WISH something you have to join and be a member of first? Thanks!

Thank you! :) I'd be happy to post about it afterwards. I'm looking forward to meeting Jeff G and just getting a little pre-race run in.

Yes, please join the meet up! I post frequently but I still don't really "know" everyone.
