Anyone else glad to be tapering? I had a long week with two speed works and a long run (6 days of running), and I'm ready for a break.

ME!!! I'm following the Goofy plan right now & it had me doing my long run at 3 mi yesterday & 9 miles next weekend. I decided to switch the two weekends around and at the present I'm glad I did. I figured since we would be walking in the parks Thurs & Fri prior it would be smart to switch them. :D

I'm a beginner! Can someone give me some advice? I ran 10 miles last weekend. It was my longest run and I only did it once. Should I try it again tomorrow? Or just start tapering?

Thanks!

This is just me. But I was told if you can run 10 you can do 13. I usually run 10 miles 3 wheels out then taper to 8 miles, then five, and then I have the race. My biggest concern at this point is I want to run to stay in shape but I also don't want to have an injury right before the race. But again this is what I do and some other runners may do it differently. A lot of it depends on how you feel.

I'm with ya! Glad I'm not the only one who got his butt kicked this week....

TAPER!

(also..having done my last long run....it seems VERY close....so excited!)

I will not be tapering. :scared: Losing my job a month ago completely derailed my training. :crazy2: I did 6 miles yesterday and it was awful! :sad2: So I am going to go ahead and do a 10 miler next weekend. I feel comfortable keeping my mileage up since I won't be reducing my mileage after the race..I'm gearing up for "race season" here in Phoenix. :cheer2::cheer2:

Yes !! We ran 13.5 this morning and honestly the last miles and half was hard. No cheers, no finishers medal nothing. Will taper until race day!!

Back of the pack checking in! DH and I ran 12 miles yesterday. 14:20 on average. Haven't decided whether we will taper or run at least a 10 next weekend.

Does anyone know if there will be an ice tent and a massage tent at the end? There was one of each of these at the WDW half. Needed ice for my knee- felt like heaven. Regretted not getting a massage- may treat myself to one if Disneyland has one.

Yeah! That's about my pace. I'll be black there with you! Hey, it's where the party is. :). What corral are you in?

For those of you who have been before, do the vendors at the expos ever offer any good discounts? free samples? I'm budgeting how much to bring and if there might be weekend only discounts that would be good to know...
And someone probably said this somewhere, but if I wanted discount tickets get I get them through GET at the expo even if I didn't register through them?

I think the discounts are ok. Similar to other expo prices. There'll be some samples also. On race merchandise~ if you have either an AP or a Disney Visa(and spend $50 for that discount) you can get a discount on their official race merch. Pretty sure Disney GC work as well. For AP's you get whatever discount you'd get in the parks ~ 20/15/10%. I think that's the only place that will recgnize the discount b/c the other vendors are non-disney products.

And you can get GET Travel park tix at the expo. They have their booth downstairs where we get our bibs. I think the prices are $5 more than the preorder, but still cheaper than the main entrance prices.

So, everybody does this a bit differently. As a beginner, I don't think you need to do another "long" run unless you think it will give you more confidence. For a beginner 10 miles will get you to the finish line.
I can tell you want I am doing for these last two weeks: this week I am doing my speed workouts but they are my stepback workouts, this weekend I am running 6 miles. then next week I will do my maintanance run ono Tuesday or Wednesday and do walking the rest of the time.

Yeah, each taper is different depending on your experience, goals, etc. The main goal for all should be to start resting your body for the race. Taper doesn't usually start until the day after a long run, but it doesn't have to work that way.

For me, I did 15 on Saturday, and will drop my weekly miles by 20% or so. I still do one speed work this week, but it will be short repeats and not too hard. I will run 5 days instead of 6 also and end with an 8-10 mile run. The week after that I usually go 6, 5, off, 4, 3, off, race and try and throw in some accelerations at the middle and end of the runs to keep loose.

It's like 12 days away!!! AHH!!!!

So I had set a RunKeeper goal several months ago to run a certain number of miles before my Birthday (in 8 days) which averaged out to allow for my standard 5-8 miles a day routine.

But I have slacked, and so now to hit that goal I will have to run 10 miles every day for the next 7 days.

So while I still might run some long runs between now and my birthday, I probably won't hit my stupid RunKeeper goal. Unless I do 5 miles AM and 5 miles PM. I could maybe see myself doing that. But I probably won't.

I average about 11 minutes a mile. Even when I am DEAD RUNNING I can't seem to go faster than about 8 minutes per mile. So either I am doing something wrong or I am just not meant to be some 6 minute per mile prancing gazelle. I am only (barely) 5'3". Maybe that has something to do with it? Like I seriously CANT go faster than that or I would trip over myself.

For the Disneyland Half, I'd like to average a 12 minute per mile pace, factoring in possible heat and stops.

YAY DISNEY! I am really very excited for this. :)

How long have you been running? 8mm isn't bad. If you can run that for a short time, the given time, more races and speed work you could probably bring your average down closer to that number. 5'3" is not a bad height for an endurance runner. I have two running friends who are about that size and both built up their speed and have now run the Boston Marathon twice--one in her 40s, the other about 50.

Some people can't run 8mm even for a short time. If you like racing then you could probably drop your average without too much work. I started running long distance in 1999 in my 30s. During that time I dropped 50 min off my marathon time, and hit several PRs in my mid-40s. Most of the progress was from doing speed work (with friends) and running more.

Almost positive that I saw a medical tent last year. I too may take advantage of one. For whatever reason, my right shoulder is really hurting after my long runs.

I'm looking forward to a short training session this weekend. The longer ones have dominated my training session and I'm feeling burned out. I wouldn't describe it as discouragement since I've finished each session just fine, but the past few weeks have had me questioning why exactly I signed up for the Coast to Coast this year. Then again, the thought of that Coast to Coast medal helps me keep going.

I understand. For the first time in forever, I've not enjoyed the summer. Summer is my favorite season and I feel it's gone and I haven't enjoyed an ounce of it. Why? The triple H - heat, humidity, and hills. I can't do anything about the hills - it's where I live, but the other two? It's been so constant, so daunting at times, that it's knocked the wind out of my Coast to Coast sails many a day. Yet - we're plugging along - at the back of the pack. I just want to enjoy this race, stay within the allotted time, finish upright, on my own power, and without injury. A lot to ask for, huh? :guilty:

The way I see it, if I finish the race and get a medal, I succeeded. I don't care so much about time. I signed up this year in part because I need the motivator kicking me in the butt to drive to the gym instead of home after work.

Now that said, I'm actually questioning whether or not I want to continue doing 1/2 marathons after completing the Coast to Coast. I may drop down to the 5K as I'm hoping it will provide the motivation to exercise, but not at the distances required for a 1/2.

I agree with this and am with you.

I have no sage advice, but I will probably see you because I keep about the same pace for the 1/2.

Like some of the previous post I am more concerned about finishing the race and getting the medal. I usually run about a 10:30 minute pace, but I decided not to worry about it since I am just want to take the race in and have fun. I will probably run a local race just to see how fast I can run a half.
