OFFICIAL Disney Cake Chatter Thread - Part III

Love the design! The ship flying across the moon is one of my fave parts of the movie so I am a huge fan of seeing it incorporated into the cake. I don't know how you wanted them to do Big Ben...but it might reduce costs some if they were to start with an edible image and add little details to enhance it. Either way- fabulous idea! :thumbsup2
I'm perfectly fine with Big Ben being an edible image. That's kind of what I was thinking - while it would be fun to have the whole thing piped on the cake it definitely would take more effort and likely cost more.
I'm not a huge fan of the stand up edible images on cakes, and I knew it was completely out of the budget to get a character molded in chocolate so I was trying to come up with something that wouldn't look too strange flat. Once I thought of Peter Pan and those two images I was very excited. I'm reading Peter Pan to DS right now as his bedtime story, and I got the movie to put in his Easter basket, so I think it will be well suited to where we are in our Disney life right now.

And here's the actual cake:

20r2s0m.jpg

The cost was $77 (+ the automatic 18% gratuity added because of our party size).

We really couldn't be happier with how it all went. I would absolutely order a cake from the Contemporary again!
How sweet!

I think it would really depend on size - I'd say for 10in (10 people) you'd be looking at roughly $100, for a 6 in (6 ppl) you'd be looking at $75 you can have BIg Ben and the ship on chocolate, the flowers in fondant/paste and painted. If you are okay without fondant over the cake/just buttercream then the cost is lower. The fondant work is where the price jumps up - but the cake you're showing can be made beautifully without fondant.

BTW I love the idea the ship sailing past the moon has always been one of my favourite parts of the movie.

I'm glad we're on the same page. I was thinking right around $75 for a 6 inch fondant cake too! There will only be barely 4 of us (3 adults and 1 toddler) so going any bigger doesn't make sense at all. I really don't think I need fondant either, but I'm planning on ordering through the Grand Floridian (to be delivered to Ohana) and I haven't seen many examples of custom cakes without fondant from there.
If I can get it without fondant for less, then I think DH would be much more happy with the cost. If this goes well, then I expect I'll be able to convince him to let me put a cake into the budget for every Disney trip, but for now neither one of us knows exactly what to expect.

Just ordered a dark chocolate Cinderella's slipper dessert and a mini cake with a dark chocolate castle topper for our 1900 Park Fare dinner to make up for our 10th anniversary and celebrate our 11th anniversary!

Did you mention a budget, because maybe that was part of the problem? Just from my own perusal of this thread (I have yet to order a cake myself, so I'm definitely not an expert) a cake like that would likely cost close to $200.
I have seen him customize slightly larger versions of the mini wedding cakes for less though.

That's what I was thinking too. Most of the two tiered cakes I have seen around here are $250-$350 (except the mini two-tiered cakes).

I've only ordered two cakes, but Chef Brian was the easiest for me to order with. I'm sorry, PP, that you've had such a rough time :(.

We will be celebrating my DDs bday at BOG in June and I was wondering where the cakes come from(who to order from) and does anyone know of any cupcake type cakes made? My DD is obsessed with baking cupcakes and says she is going to own her own shop someday and I would like a creative cake to celebrate her bday. Any pictures or recommendations?

Dear Lurkyloo ,

I am traveling to WDW and am looking for a birthday cake for my son, who will be turning 11. We are looking for a local off site bakery. (Small business shopper) The look of the cake is less important than the taste .( Less sugar more flavor... whipped topping , swiss meringue frosting..). I was told to contact you from the Liners chat forum from
MeetmeatPolly ... she suggested you may have this answer...She told me you would know all things bakery ;) Also any off site bakeries that would be worth the trip to try ..Thank you in Advance

All Disney cakes use the same recipes, so they all taste the same. Epcot used to use whipped cream frosting but seems to have gone the buttercream route lately. Still, I think you could get it from pretty much any Deluxe resort bakery (some of which also service the parks - see Post #2) if you requested it. You might also like Disney's ganache, which I don't find to be very sweet. If you don't have any luck, you could maybe work out a way to pick up a cake from Coronado Springs, which is not owned by Disney and frosts its cakes in whipped cream instead of buttercream.

If you are looking for Swiss meringue, your best bet is an offsite bakery. I have secondhand recommendations I can dig up if you like, but the only off-site cake I've ever had was traditional buttercream from Publix.

Hope this helps! :thumbsup2

Thank you so much for your response. Yes, I would prefer to support a off-site small business.. If that doesn't work I will use your suggestions.. Have a great day

Unfortunately, the white chocolate figures are only available at a few of the Deluxe Disney resorts and locations serviced by them (which Teppan Edo is not). Complete info is in Posts #1 & #2.

Here are some photos of Stitch for you:

This is going to sound really dumb, but where in Epcot can I have something like this delivered? I have a reservation at Via Napoli for the DBF, and he'd go ape if a Stitch chocolate figure showed up out of the blue for dessert.

So far I have only ever seen that Stitch offered by the Grand Floridian. If other deluxe resort bakeries can get it, your only options at Epcot would be Le Cellier, Coral Reef or Garden Grill, where the Yacht & Beach Club bakery will deliver. Via Napoli is owned by the Patina Group and has its own small list of cakes and desserts you can order; they don't have access to Disney's cakes and white chocolate figures.

If you can arrange to pick it up on the sly, I'd call Private Dining at the GF and see if they can leave it somewhere at the Grand Floridian for you to pick up (Gasparilla Grill? The Concierge Desk?) and buy it from them over the phone. (If you're staying at the GF, problem solved! They'll deliver it to your room.)

Sorry lurkyloo I have to correct you on some incorrect information in this post. Coronado Springs Resort is owned and operated by Disney. They just do not have a bakery. The quick service location is the only thing that is an operating participant.

I know this is a stretch, but any chance a Stitch could be deliverable in MK? Ever since I found this thread, I kept thinking about surprising DBF with something, but he doesn't eat cake, so chocolate is my best bet. Especially with Stitch; it's his favorite character of all time.

If a Stitch can be delivered to a place that does Table Service in MK, I've got this in the bag (and happily cancel my first reservation for San Angel in a sacrifice for him.)

MK is serviced by the Contemporary bakery, so you'd have to call them and see if they could do Stitch.

According to Palmas Services' website, they manage all food and beverage at Coronado Springs (via Springs Food Service, LLC) and the Mexico Pavilion at Epcot. Has this changed recently? And, more importantly, does it mean one can get a Disney bakery-made cake at Coronado Springs? :hyper:

OK- using this pic as an example since it was posted fairly recently (January).

Does anyone know what is up with all of the recent copyright issues? I've seen several posts on it and now a friend is telling me that Pat doesn't think they can make a Cars/Lightning McQueen cake due to copyright issues. I think the pp's cake above was delivered to AoA...still, they obviously didn't have copyright issues. Just sounds so odd.

EDIT- Pat also told her that Mater was fine...just copyright issues with Lightning. I just don't get it.

So I heard back from the CM who is coordinating my cake designs with Chef Deran. Per the CM I will have designs and quotes in my inbox today.

Anyone familiar with Chef Deran's work?

Feel free to PM me if you prefer to keep any feedback private.

I was told my cake would be made at the boardwalk bakery. This is for a stay at pop.

This friend is staying at BLT, but I believe it's for a meal at 1900 PF, so it would have to be done by the GF. I just don't get how they can do Mater, but not Lightning...especially when other Disney bakeries can.
