Official DISNEY Cake Chatter Thread - Part II

Me, DH, and my in-laws will be there for a week in October. We want to surprise my FIL for his birthday. Originally I wanted to do one of those fantastic fondant pretty cakes, but its just more than we want to spend. So now I'm deciding what I want to do, and where. We are staying at Wilderness Lodge in the Villas. Here are our TS reservations for the trip

Chefs de France- first night
Mama Melrose - lunch
WCC - breakfast
Hollywood Brown Derby - dinner
Tusker House - Lunch
Coral Reef - Dinner

So I'm looking to see which of these restaurants will do the best celebration/surprise for an adult birthday?? Or any advice at all? I'm a little overwhelmed by all the options! :goodvibes

Thanks!

If you don't want to do a fancy fondant cake, than I recommend any of the restaurants at Hollywood Studios. They make yummy screened cakes for around $32. There are a couple pics in the thread. Mine was a muppets chocolate cake and was really fresh ... at that price you can do one at Mamas and one at derby! ;)

I haven't heard of cakes delivered to Tusker. I think the Epcot ones have started to get better, but are hit and miss as to quality. At WCC, you could get a cake made by Chef Brian but it'll be pricier.

So we are staying at CR and I called and left a message on 407-824-2955. Is that the correct number? And how long before they usually call you back. This is for a cake on either the 25th or 26th of this month.

TIA,
Michele

That is the correct number. You can always call back to check in. I'm jumpy like that. :teeth:

  • Signature Restaurants like Chefs and Brown Derby seem to do the best job of making a big deal out of adults' celebrations.
  • Mama Melrose, Brown Derby & Tusker House get their cakes from DHS' bakery, which has limited flavor options and size restrictions on screen prints.
  • Coral Reef cakes are done by Epcot's bakery, which uses whipped cream frosting instead of buttercream and also has limited flavor options.
  • Chefs de France gets its cakes (buttercream) from an outside vendor. Not better or worse, just FYI. Only options are chocolate or vanilla.
  • WCC gets its cakes from the Contemporary, but you have to call Private Dining at the Contemporary if you want anything fancy (rather than overwhelming the liaison at Wilderness Lodge)—I know you don't need the $$$ fondant, but if you wanted a more unusual flavor combo, this bakery would be your best bet.

Lurkyloo_ first off, thank you for all of your knowledge :worship:

Secondly- I called private dining at the CR, and I'm not sure I was given an email that takes me directly to Brian....Even though I asked for it...It was a general email address...Does this sound correct? it starts with WDPR-contemporary..I thought awhile back I saw a different email address for Brian..am I mistaken? Thanks!! :worship:

That is the email I used a few weeks ago and got Chef Brian. I think they are using a general email, in case someone is on vacation, etc.:thumbsup2

Looks right to me......I went back to my emails from last year.

Can a six in. cake at GF be personalized at all? Not the flavors, maybe just some writing or mickey heads?
I was going to order my daughter a two tier mini cake for her bd for the day we have tea (she'll like that better than the tea offerings anyway!) but it almost looks like a 6 inch would save me money. Is it buttercream? I was wondering if they could pipe mickey heads on it.

I am new to this whole cake orderig business. We will be celebrating my DS(turning 8) on Dec 1st. We have reservations at Chef Mickey's for dinner. I would love to get him a cake with monorail on top. Who would I contact? CR private dining?

Anyone know what the estimated cost on this would be and if it's doable. I don't need any fancy flavors. He's a strictly chocolate boy. He is crazy about the monorails and I would love to have something similar to some of the pictures that I have seen with monorails.

Any other suggestions?:confused3

Some of these cakes are amazing. :)

I want to order a regular Mickey face cake for our arrival at Fort Wilderness cabins. I think I remember reading here that you can get them at Ft Wilderness, correct? How long do you think a family of 5 voracious cake eaters can get by with a regular Mickey face cake? We have 8 days at Ft Wilderness, and my dh, especially, loves cake.

Also, I want to order a cinderella slipper for our SoA dinner for my dd's birthday, do I call a different number than the cake number for that?

Thanks!

Someone asked about a cake at WL.
This was a whipped cream covered, yellow cake with chocolate mousse on one layer and strawberry custard on the other.
I have a scuba diver lover!!!

Thanks for the help. Hollywood Brown Derby seems like our best bet since a cake seems more appropriate after dinner. I see our flavor options are limited, but what about decor?

Not sure if this will help with anyone's advice or anything, but we're trying to make a big deal with a small budget to cheer up and surprise my FIL, he has had a very frustrating and stressful year due to his job and health and Disney is kinda like a break for him from reality (like everyone I think!). So its more than a cake to me, I'm probably putting to much pressure on myself - but I want it to be perfect!

Great cakes - I love the flowers on both of them!

Decor options are also limited: frosting, screen prints, sprinkles, basic decorative flowers (we couldn't tell if these were gum paste or plastic!). I would wager, since he's a guy, FIL might be just as happy with the thought behind Hollywood Studios Bakery's standard buttercream cake (on par with the ones at the supermarket) rather than needing to be impressed with a fancy custom cake... :)

So true! He's gonna be so shocked, its gonna be wonderful! Talked to MIL (showed her a couple disney sites, including this one, with cake pictures, and now she's hooked...whoops, LOL!) today and now we're discussing doing WCC since we can very easily take the cake, and ourselves , easily back to the room since we're staying at the Villas (so we can munch on it for the remainder of the trip!).

Can they deliver cakes at breakfast?

So excited!! I just ordered my Mickey Head cake to be delivered to the Garden Grill for 9/24/11!! My DH & DS will be so excited and surprised!:yay::woohoo::yay::woohoo::yay:

I will post pics as soon as we return!!

OMG talk about price changes

In 2008 for our 2nd anniversary I had a recreation made of the top Layer of our wedding cake I payed $55 for it
DSC04074.jpg

I called today and the price for the exact cake was $90 + taxes
She said in the last 3 years more people have been ordering special cakes an there super busy crazy increase though

I ordered the Coral and Shells mini cake from Pat at the GF yesterday for our upcoming trip. She tells me they cannot do fondant on the mini cakes. It will be buttercream with chocolate cake and dark chocolate mousse filling. I'll post a pic after our trip. It's for the 2 of us, so I hope it will be just big enough for a dessert for us.

Just to save me reading through every page to find an answer,if I want to order a cake for my DW birthday for our table at Cal Grill how do I do it ? I live in UK so a bit difficult to ring, can I e mail anyone ?
