Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part IV! (2012-2016)

I have ordered a birthday cake with Pat at the Grand Floridian. I was asking about what flowers I would like and she insisted that I did not have a choice. I wanted more tropical flowers which is what I requested when I had ordered a previous cake for my anniversary. It was no problem then. Why can I not have the type of flower I want now? Price quote is $125. Seems strange

Where did you order the cake from last time? If it's the GF, you probably spoke to her originally. So you might want to gently remind her that she's helped you place a similar order in the past. The GF chefs can do all kinds of flowers—check out their handiwork at the Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings' bridal showcases:

Yes, I had Pat's number from my previous order for Grand Floridian Cafe. I had told her also of that cake and how much I liked it. When I had ordered that one I had told her I really did not like roses and liked tropical flowers instead. It was no problem. So I was shocked that she said I had no choice. I am ordering a Tinkerbell cake that was posted here on this site from about five years ago. The one with green fondant with vines and tropical purplish flowers with Tink white figurine. Pat new exactly what cake I was talking about as she said she was the designer. I really liked that cake. You think I could ask for something similar in regards to flowers which have been done before. I have placed the order with faith in her based on past experience but am second guessing myself if I will get what I have envisioned. Also, it is ordered for December 25 which is my actual birthday for a dinner at Citricos. Would that be a reason?

I didn't want to make a big issue out of it last time, but I wasn't too thrilled to see that someone was re-posting my pictures on another Disney website without my permission. I'm hoping that my request will be honored this time :)
I just googled - I had no idea this was going on. I edited my post.

Now back to cakes!

BoardWalk Bakery does customize 6-inch cakes, though for certain flavors and designs any bakery on property will tell you that you need to go up to 8 inches. What was your request? Also, was the person you talked to even aware that OKW gets its cakes from BoardWalk Bakery? You might want to try to catch a different CM on the phone...

My request was a Minnie Mouse themed chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and peanut butter cup filling with chocolate covered strawberries on top if possible. She said they couldn't do peanut butter cup filling at all and they didn't do chocolate covered strawberries since they got their cakes from Boardwalk Bakery :sad2: When I mentioned that I had seen others online saying that they had ordered custom 6 inch cakes she basically brushed me off and said I had to order at least an 8 inch for any customization and even then they couldn't do the peanut butter cup filing or chocolate covered strawberries. Based on the prior times I called it seem like only one CM takes all the custom cake requests coming through Olivia's :/ Every time it forwarded directly to her voicemail. I'm tempted to just order through Boardwalk Bakery and pick it up and bring it to dinner, but I really wanted it to just be delivered at dinner as a surprise.

This cake from this thread was what I was looking for (with a different filling) which I know was ordered at AKL but I figured if AKL could do it surely Boardwalk Bakery could do it:

Ugh. That is totally annoying! BoardWalk Bakery does do peanut butter cup filling - brides who get married at Sea Breeze Point order it all the time! I'm trying to think what I'd do... I guess I'd just order the 8-inch to get what I wanted, because I can always find a use for extra cake. :teeth: But I can totally understand your not wanting to be strong-armed into purchasing more than you need. What about changing the location of your dinner reservation?

The date should have nothing to do with the availability of certain options. If you've already placed the order, I'm sure it will turn out great. But if you really wanted to press the issue, I think you'd be well within your rights to call back and tell her it's bothering you that when you ordered previously she let you have tropical flowers (which you loooooved and the cake looked SO amazing) and now you don't understand why you can't have them this time. But I'm pushy like that!

She didn't say I necessarily couldn't have it just the Chef basically does his thing? If my interpretation is right. That is why I went ahead with the order. I think I will call and politely see if I can nail it down a bit more. She was not able to guarantee any particular colour of flower either. Thanks for your opinion lurkyloo.

I called back yesterday and got ahold of another cast member. She told me that a 10 inch was the minimum for a custom cake, peanut butter cup filling was definitely not available, and they couldn't do chocolate covered strawberries, only fresh plain strawberries. I asked her to call the Boardwalk Bakery to check please. She called them and said that they confirmed these specifics. I have officially given up on ordering a custom cake and am quite disappointed in the whole process. :(

I just ordered an 8" custom cake from Boadwalk via Pop... So strange!

I am now in contact with someone from OKW (the resort we are staying at) and she also seemed unaware that they could do fancy cakes but I insisted that I had read they could and told her I'd send her a picture of what I wanted. She then looked something up and seemed to see that they COULD do a fondant/fancy cake. I'm still unsure whether this route is going to pan out or if I will have to dig further

We are eating at Garden Grill for breakfast that morning. Seeing the cake above from Garden Grill (which is SUPER cute, by the way) I'm thinking that maybe I need to order it there and try to bring it over secretly to Chef de France myself for that night?

To be honest, this is quite the process. And cast members I've talked to don't seem to know what the options are for guests even though they seem to want to help they don't seem to have the resources to do so. Disney could do a lot to better streamline this for guests. But I'm persistent and I'm going to make this happen.

PS. That Mad Hatter cake is AWESOME.

That's the problem with Disney being so huge—ask a different cast member, get a different answer. I am sure that whoever this misinformed CM spoke with at BoardWalk Bakery was ALSO misinformed. Often the people manning the counter/phone at BWB have no clue beyond what's on the generic cake ordering form they dig out from under the counter. If that CM had actually spoken with a BWB pastry chef, you would have gotten a completely different answer.

I can understand why you've given up, but if you want alternative ideas (like contacting a BWB pastry chef directly or using a local bakery that delivers to WDW, such as It's Tasty Too or Party Flavors), let me know.

....And that's exactly why this thread exists! Because Disney can't or won't make this information readily available, and sometimes the cast members know less than DISers who've been ordering specialty cakes for years. If Disney actually had a standardized website with photos of the options and lists of flavors, that would be great! Until then, there's the DIS Boards Cake Chatter Thread and my little cheat sheet: http://disneytravelbabble.com/how-to/order-cake/

Quick advice, please! We are doing a Wishes cruise from the Poly as a "thank you" to my parents who are taking us on this trip. I am thinking of ordering a Mickey cake to have on the cruise. Any suggestions on chocolate or vanilla? Our party is split on preference. Any thoughts or tips are appreciated!
ETA: we will have 7 adults & 3 kids (young, but they can pack away cake!)

Anybody order a custom order cake from La Hacienda? I understand that they use an outside vendor. And who would be the vendor they would use?

Well, even if you get "vanilla," the outside is still covered in chocolate ganache, so maybe that's a good compromise?

They don't use a local retail bakery like Sprinkles Custom Cakes or Party Flavors—it's a commercial bakery that churns out supermarket-style cakes. They look like this:

Thanks for the info! That made my decision about a reservation for my son's birthday a lot easier! Rose and Crown it is! Hopefully I will get a lively cake and be able to post pictures at a later date!

We celebrated my daughter's 1st birthday Friday at Tony's Town Square. Here is the inspiration photo I sent the contemporary bakery.
2lvbrk1.jpg

I asked the Mickey heads be piped on in alternating red and black.
Here is the cake we got.
2my3tra.jpg

It's cute but I was a little disappointed. I wanted larger Mickey heads that my daughter would be able to recognize. And they did pink instead of red. I regret the white chocolate Mickey because it was a waste. That thing is huge and really, what the heck are you supposed to do with it? We took it back to our room but left so early to get to the airport yesterday and forgot it in the fridge. I ordered almond cake with vanilla buttercream. The cake was a little over sweet but delicious. I'm glad I got almond. We had 6 adults and cake left over. I ordered the 6". There was a mother and daughter dining next to us and we gave them the rest of the cake to enjoy. I'm not really sure if I would order a cake again. It tasted great but it didn't look quite like I imagined. The process was easy enough to order though.

Disneyland cake question...

I posted over there, but didn't get any responses...so maybe someone in the Cake Chatter knows. I put in an order for a cake to be delivered to our meal at Goofy's Kitchen. The girl who handled the order took down all of the details, gave me a quote, but said I'd be getting a follow up email with an official quote (since I asked for a few non-standard things). She called me back to swap out my character on the cake, since what I wanted couldn't be done...but that was it. So, I waited a couple of days for an email, but nothing came through. I called back, spoke to another person in dining and was told that they only send emails when there's a problem and that I shouldn't expect any kind of email regarding my cake order.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I just want to make sure everything is good to go. Thanks!

I wasn't going to do it, but I know I will! We are going for a weekend stay at All Star Movies 12/26-12/28. I have not stayed at a value in a while, but I did just order 2 cakes from the Boardwalk Bakery last June. I'm "wanting" a 6in cake w/ Christmas colors. Last time I ordered from them, I pretty much told them exactly what I wanted. Has anyone just had Boardwalk do ...well..whatever? How well did they decorate your BUTTERCREAM cake? They do deliver to ASMo, right???
