I'm posting this a little late, but I recently ordered a cake for my moms birthday. This was my second time ordering a cake from the Contemporary and it came out amazing! My moms favorite character is Animal from the Muppets so I ordered a cake that would look like him. The cake had cost ~$136 for an 8" marble cake with dark chocolate mousse with fresh raspberries for filling and chocolate buttercream frosting. She absolutely loved the cake :-)

Calling @lurkyloo and any other cake lovers!!!!

I need to order a 5-year anniversary cake to celebrate our DFTW wedding. We will be ordering it from the Grand Floridian and it will be almond cake with amaretto mousse (our wedding cake flavors!). I'm looking for some ideas to pass along to Pat or whoever might be taking cake orders these days. We check into the Villas at the Grand Floridian on November 29, but I'm thinking about having it delivered to us during dinner at Narcoossee's on December 2. Our entire trip will be pretty Christmas-themed with the Candlelight Processional, the Osborne Lights, and MVMCP, so I don't mind sticking with the Christmas theme for the cake. Other suggestions are welcome, too! But I feel like I need to give the bakery some kind of direction. Please help :)

Thanks, everyone!!!!!

We are going to be at WDW for DD7's birthday. I'm debating whether or not to order a cake for her. She has food allergies - dairy, oats and shellfish.

I would love to hear opinions on the dairy free and/or vegan cakes in terms of taste from a Disney bakery or from Erin McKenna's.

TIA!

We dealt with oat allergy in addition to others, but never a dairy allergy. I've not specifically heard of a custom cake being done with a dairy allergy so you may need to contact them to ask about it. We did a gluten free cake once and I recall them mentioning the dairy being in a frosting. It was mentioned in a way like that was the only option unless we wanted to go with the allergy free cakes which are then gluten, dairy, nut, and egg free I believe.

I haven't had the allergy free cakes from Erin McKenna's but have had other allergy free treats like the donuts and they are good for what they are, but the average not allergic person probably wouldn't be impressed.

This is an image of the Christmas cake I ordered for in-room delivery this coming Saturday night. YC/BC Fine Dining is handling it but I don't see why this couldn't be duplicated elsewhere. $68 for 6-inch (excluding tax and delivery/setup) for a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream underneath the fondant.

@kimmy85 That's adorable, and a great price, too! I didn't think you could get a fondant cake for that price.

@lurkyloo I'm vaguely remembering a penguin cake... That one was yours, wasn't it? Do you have pics or recall pricing? I'm thinking a 6" will do since it's just us and our three-year-old twins.

This is fantastic! We are ordering a haunted mansion mini cake for our upcoming trip - so ours may be a bit similar - and it's great to see the creativity that went into your little cake! We're going with plain purple fondant because CR previously said the mini cake would not accommodate the haunted mansion wallpaper frosting . . . although photos and a report on this thread indicate that YC/BC will do it. Earlier this year, CR suggested a haunted mansion gate on top of a mini cake, but when I asked for that now, they said only 2D images on the mini cakes - no 3D. So it's always hard to understand why the differences, but both cakes we ordered from CR turned out wonderfully, so it's all good in the end.
I was offered the gate topper for our anniversary cake but it was $70 for the cake with the gate topper and $60 when I changed the topper to roses.

I had Carrie's penguin cake bookmarked:

Christmas-themed Cake at California Grill

Date Received: 12/13/09

Location: California Grill

Cake info: Chocolate cake with chocolate chips and chocolate mousse filling

Price: $100

How I Got Inspiration for the Cake: The cake was a surprise for friends whose anniversary is Christmas Eve, so I went on www.flickr.com and searched for "Christmas cake" and then, after being completely overwhelmed by the number of images, narrowed it down to "penguin Christmas cake." I created a file of photos of cakes I liked and then had my husband create a photo composite using the elements I wanted from each cake.

I highly recommend using Flickr if you're stuck on ideas for a cake, since Disney doesn't offer any standard selection of cakes or website of photos to use as inspiration. :thumbsup2

How I Ordered It: I called the Contemporary and asked to speak with Private Dining. I told the CM that I wanted a customized fondant cake, and she gave me the email address of Pastry Chef Brian. I emailed him the size, flavors, and a description of the cake I wanted, plus the photo composite of the way I wanted the cake to look.

The results were amazing - he got everything exactly as I wanted it and exactly as it appeared in the picture. I was worried that the penguins would be hard to match because the ones in the picture I sent were so stylized, but he did a fabulous job.

The trade-off with these elaborate Disney cakes is taste. It wasn't a bad cake, and it certainly wasn't dry - with all that mousse and the chocolate chips, it was very moist. It just wasn't very flavorful, in my opinion. However, the guests of honor liked it, and that's what counts! :teeth:

Isn't that funny? No gate available on the mini cake for my order, but my quote for 2-tier purple fondant with black accent and black rose is $45. Just plain vanilla cake and white buttercream under the fondant, and no wallpaper print. Just placed the order today and really excited to see the results! We've been fortunate that our CR cakes have always turned out wonderfully. Cakes over in the BW Bakery area are looking fantastic too!

WOW! I sent the Contemporary a photo of that exact cake last year, and Chef Donald said they weren't allowed to sculpt character faces due to copyright restrictions. I guess I shoulda gotten a second opinion from Chef Brian...

We're back from our trip 10/30-11/8 and we had a cake delivered to the California grill, worked with Chef Brian.
Star Wars anniversary cake
$38
6"
Vanilla buttercream, chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling
There was a ball of blue fondant to set the millennium falcon on

image.jpg
The photo color is off, I could not get a photo with better lighting! I added the millennium falcon keychain (removed the chain) but the color was a navy blue not black.
I noted that it was a surprise several times however when we got upstairs the person hosting us, after talking about the fact it was our 10th anniversary, picked uo a big red stamp and stamped our ticket with "cake" right in front of my husband. I sat down but got so upset at the surprise being ruined I started crying and went to the bathroom. I came out they were apologetic but I started crying again, it meant so much to me. The manager came to me, showed me the cake in the box (good time to add the keychain at least) and said she will find a way to try to make it better. They were extra nice during the meal and brought is champagne with the cake. He doesn't drink champagne and I had enough to drink but it was a ice gesture. The manager gave us a set of Cali grill glasses wrapped with a bow. That was nice and I appreciated the effort however it really ruined the whole thing. We had free dining so we had dessert, the waitress brought us a little slice of cake. It was delicious! I will never end uo laughing about it but the cake was great and my husband loved it. The kids and us each had two more pieces over the next three days! It was quite big.

I wld definitely order a cake again but I won't try to surprise an adult again. Or I will make sure they are somehow not with me when I check in.

The manager did say the whole kitchen was talking about the cake and that the guys said I was a very cool wife! That was sweet. I do think it was a rather elegant but fun Star Wars cake! And bringing the ship myself kept the cost down low, I think it was well worth $38!!!

Also. The chocolate ganache was about 3/4 thick, and like a layer of pure fudge! I was wondering if the dragees would be hard and bad tasting like they were when I was a kid and had some, but they were actually good and easy to crunch!

Thanks for posting this - good to know it's not just me. :)

Ugh! I'm sorry they blew the surprise for you—I would have been just as upset. But I'm glad everyone liked the cake!

Thanks! We went through a year of trials, because my husband has depression and was suicidal. He has worked very hard with a lot of help to get out of that severe a place in year and it was so meaningful to me to surprise him in this way. But the good thing is he was surprised by the design and thrilled with both the Star Wars theme and the taste.

By the way we fit the box, which could have probably held a slightly bigger cake, into our mini fridge at POP by removing the upper shelf. Wait for it to warm uo a bit though if you have ganache! The middle proofed out of the layers when we tried to use a fork on it in the room :) nobody minded too much, they all decided it was just a chocolate bonus,

Love the Animal cake, Star Wars and the holiday cake! We wanted a plain holiday present cake, 6 inch (no special character or shape) to be delivered at California Grill and I was given a quote of $95. I had to settle for buttercream for $85. I would have loved that YC cake for $68! What a bargain! I will have to see what our cake looks like in a couple of weeks. Hopefully things will be fine with Chef Brian and my surprise will not be spoiled!

So glad your husband got the help he needed! Definitely a bummer the surprise was ruined but glad it still turned out alright. My husband and stepson would definitely dig on that Star Wars cake.

I am taking my 82 year old mother to Disney in early December to see the lights and decorations, staying at BC. Her birthday is during our visit, so I wanted to order a 2-tier mini cake to surprise her. I wanted to have it delivered to our room or during dinner at Narcoosees. I first called the BC to get a price on the mini cake I had in mind and was told the mini cakes are $40, and they asked me to email photos & instructions. I asked for almond flavor cake and she didn't know if they could do that, but would check. I got a call back last night with the quote. I had told them I wanted a 2-tier miniature wedding cake (almond or vanilla flavor cake with raspberry fruit mousse filling, with white buttercream icing, accented in Christmas red & green Mickey ears. Attached is a photo. I also asked them to add holly berries or a holly leaf in icing at the bottom of the cake on the plate to make it more Christmassy. The quote was $50 for the cake, plus tax and gratuity, for a grand total of $65.45. I didn't question the price because they called at an inconvenient time, but now I'm debating whether to spend that much for a mini cake. I guess I wasn't prepared for the extra charges, plus I thought the mini cakes were $35. Do you think I would get a better price having the cake delivered at Narcoosees and using the GF instead of using BC dining? What do you think about this price quote for a mini cake?

I would say that price is probably because of the sculpted ears and extra decorations requested. They START at $35 but go up as the details increase.
