I saw Disney says their standard 6" cake will feed up to five. There are six in my party. How small would the pieces be to feed six?

We just had my DD's birthday party and the top of her cake was a 6" (it was a 2 tier). I think half of a 6" would feed 5 or 6 honestly. I always find cake sizes to be overstated in terms of how large a cake you need to feed a certain number of people. I am getting an 8" at Disney for 8 people (2 children, 6 adults) and I think we'll have about half the cake leftover. Especially if you are going to eat it after a TS meal or buffet. I would go with the 6" vs. an 8" in case you want to have cake leftover.

This is a chart on Wilton's site. It says a 6" round will feed 12. I think they are basing that on thin wedding cake sized slices but I wouldn't go any larger unless you want to take some with you to enjoy later.

I agree a 6" round cake would give you a decent size cake piece for 6 people. I sometimes get a 6" cake for 4 people and the sizes are very large if I actually divide it by 4. I usually cut it for 6-8 slices and they are plenty big enough.

Not drawn to scale and wedges may not be exactly even, but to give you an idea of 5 pieces versus 6 pieces. Not too big of a size difference:

I'm not sure if that pic is of the light up castle, but we were told no, that we couldn't get the light up castle on a mini cake so we went with a 2 layer 6 inch cake instead.
May I ask how much this cake cost? Thanks!

okay I've been planning a cake for my upcoming trip for a while now--it was supposed to be a surprise but I accidentally spilled the beans to DGF this morning. on the plus side, I means I get to rant to you lovely people about my incredible difficulties!

I've ordered a cake twice before and the process has taken some time. (I've also had varied results in terms of how similarly the cake matches my description, but I still feel like ordering cakes for my trips!) this time I'm trying to order one for my groups first dinner at Boma (we're staying at AKL this trip) this Saturday. I've been trying to reach someone through the cake hotline for about 2 weeks at this point, and although the outgoing message assures me that I'll hear back within 24 hours, I haven't gotten a call. along with my phone number I've also left an email, and I also haven't gotten a response electronically. today is the last day I can arrange a cake before hitting the 72 hour window, so in the last day I have tried calling AKL, Boma, the dining reservation number, and I have emailed disneys customer service. no one seems able to help me reach the cake team at AKL. I am beyond frustrated, and I'm not sure what else (if anything) I can possibly do. is there anything else I can do, or am I out of luck? (and if I'm out of luck, who do I complain to?)

Got my order placed for my December "unbirthday" cake today. Was getting nervous as I'd left 2 messages for Pat over the past 2 weeks, but finally got a call back today and conversation couldn't have gone better!

Originally wanted to do a Mad Hatter cake, but after ordering a mini a few months ago, know that would be way too much cake for the 4 of us. So had decided on an AIW themed mini, but Pat said she could do a Mad Hatter shaped mini with 2 3" tiers. She said they've never tried this before, so hoping it works out, but am so excited!! Will definitely post pictures when we get back! A very merry unbirthday to me :)
Ooh I really hope that works out!!

Lol! Just my luck, I called the cake hotline yesterday to place my order and had to leave a message. So a vrry nice cast member call me back just now...unfortunately I was sitting in the car with my husband right next to me and as it is surprise for him I couldn't place the order, which i laughingly explained to her (with DH looking very confused at me)! Had to call them back when we got home and leave another message later on. Hope she calls back tonight!

You need to call AKL Private Dining. The number is in the second post of this thread: 407-938-4720

Tell them you want to order a special occasion cake but that you haven't been able to get ahold of the pastry chef. They will give you that person's email. They can even take the order for you, but if you want anything non-standard it's best to speak to the pastry chef about it first.

I just talked to Pat and ordered a 6 inch Steamboat Willie cake for delivery to our room on my 40th birthday! Hooray! Can't wait to post pics. I really love this thread and will be bummed when the trip is done and I don't have a reason to stalk cake pictures.

thanks, lurkyloo! I really appreciate all your help with this thread :) I contacted private dining--they told me to call back in the morning and talk directly to a baker. fingers crossed I can slip an order for this weekend in. if not I'm sure I can order for another meal later in my trip. the plan I have would be better for the first day, but cake will be awesome anytime.

There is always a reason to stalk cake pictures. Because it's...well, cake. And cake is awesome. ;) So I say keep your cake stalker status no matter what!

Plus, happy early birthday! Hope your cake turns out awesome. Can't wait to see pics. :)

Sincerely,
A Fellow Cake Picture Stalker

Just a quick update: I called private dining this morning and ordered my cake! When I gave my name the woman I was talking to said "oh my gosh, you have been calling every day!" She knew exactly who I was and said she's been trying to contact me but there have been problems (Canadian phone number. I was also leaving my email address but my name has a Z in it, and I was pronouncing it like a Canadian so she thought it was a different letter!). She said everyone there knew I wanted a special cake and they were ready to make it on very short notice for me, because of all the phone troubles. The folks in private dining have been really helpful--if the cake hotline isn't working, I would definitely say call private dining!

DH and (especially me) can put away some cake. 2 adults, 9 year old, and 2 toddlers had to eat 6" cake for breakfast (long story) twice and still had some leftover.

There's always another trip, which means another cake, right? I'm already planning to be in the World for my 10th anniversary next October = cake!!!

Oooh, did you have an inspiration photo? I want to order a cake for DH's 40th in May, and SBWillie is his fave, but I haven't come across any cakes featuring him...

I saw the one that was posted below. I'm not picky, I just told Pat I wanted a SBW cake :) She mentioned a few different decorating ideas and was going to talk to the decorators about it. I'll post pictures! :)

Update time! so I explained some of my difficulties booking this cake recently--well of course it was supposed to be delivered at our first dinner and today our flight was terribly delayed. so again I was on the phone with AKL's private dining making last-minute plans (to have the cake delivered to our room after check in). we're here (24 hours of travel time later!) and we just had the cake. I have to say, the team here really exceeded my expectations.

the deets: I asked for a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting and filling, red fondant with yellow Mickey and Minnie shoes. I was quoted a cost over 100$, which was just too much money for me to spend, so I asked for just one pair of Mickey shoes which brought the cost into the 70$ range. I was expecting 2-D cutouts. the hand-molded shoes are way beyond what I hoped to find. plus they made Minnie shoes too--both are adorable.

I hope the photos show up--I'm posting from my phone because I'm so excited to share!
