Official "Castle" thread! Spoilers welcomed!

And while we wait, a little fun with real-world references in Deadly-Heat (not Castle's real world; there are zillions of those. I mean OUR real world.)

I'm eight chapters in, and so far, I've found at least two really anvilicious ones, a reference to Rook trying to find a code solution in a "a website devoted to the mutt languages of some TV show called Firefly", and a mention that a suspect was known to like "Mil-Mar Estates Cabernet Sauvignon."

The website is fireflychinese.com and the name of the wine is a reference to the showrunners, Terri Edda Miller and Andrew W. Marlowe, a married couple often referred to as Mil-Mar as a play on their surnames.

I'm almost done with Deadly Heat. (not a bad read BTW) There's a good one when Rook is taking a meeting with some Hollywood types & Nikki is talking to him on the phone. A background voice mentions "maybe we can get Nathan" for a part. :lmao:

Thinking more about the Nikki Heat books, and I love that the name of the PI is Joe Flynn. And the description of him is "like a medical show doctor" since Chad Everett who played him on Castle (Blue Butterfly) played a TV doctor in the late 60's. Well technically he played Jerry Maddox, but ......

A LOT of the character names in this show are references to real people, most of them writers, illustrators and film professionals of one sort or another. I suspect that Castle's Joe Flynn is named after Joe Flynn the character actor, who did voice roles for Disney in the late 60's and 70's. He was probably best known as the Captain in the McHale's Navy movies. He was known for being really good at playing stupid with a straight face.

"Rick Castle" otoh, has been identified by Marlowe as a mnemonic of sorts; it is supposed to make you think of a perjorative term for a wealthy man who is full of himself. ;)

Just for fun, I thought I’d put my thoughts about the season 6 premiere out there. These are my guesses, I could be totally wrong about all of it. But what the heck, right?

1. Kate says yes. Back in May, I first thought she’d say yes, but soon changed to “not right now” with her proposing to Rick some time after the Ryan baby was born. (yes, my guess was that specific, LOL) But after reading in July that she gives him a definite answer I changed my thought to Yes.
2. And she says yes to DC as well, which is also different than what I thought in May.
3. No idea about the victim of the car crash either. But I’m pretty sure the car crash is fake
4. But I have an idea about the shooting victim/cliffhanger: Rick is shot while he’s doing a parallel investigation to what Kate’s doing for work. He can’t shadow her anymore, so he needs to do something, and without Kate there to have his back, he’s in trouble.

I also think she’s coming back to NY. I really feel this is a show about relationships, not the crime of the week. It’s about Castle & Beckett, sure, but it’s also about his relationship with his mom & daughter, her relationship to Espo & Ryan, his relationship with the guys too. I just don’t see them continuing a DC/NY hybrid, nor do I see it becoming Castle in DC.

I’m not sure how they bring her back to NY. Could be that she finds out the Bracken was behind the job offer so she quits. Could be that she starts investigating Bracken, and she’s told there are no personal vendettas allowed so she quits. Could be that the AG is investigating Bracken, the task force has figured out Kate’s mother’s connection and that’s why she got the offer. Or she simply realizes that she prefers to be a homicide cop in NY. Or I could be totally wrong & they are going to continue the NY/DC thing. Like I said, these are all guesses. We’ll know for sure in a few days! (sooner if you’re in Canada – Canadian TV is airing Castle on Sundays now)

Scuttlebutt I heard is that the car crash is near-fatal -- to someone, but not the someone who was in it that we might really care about. (One spoiler showed a photo of a wrecked car with Virginia plates on it, but you could see the engine, and it wasn't a cop car.)

The shooting is the red herring, I think. I think that the catch is that it is either faked, or is at such point-blank range that a victim wearing a vest gets knocked out badly anyway. I suspect that the point of putting it there is to show us the reaction of someone else who initially thinks that it is real.

As to the Federal gig, I think it is possible that Kate gets assigned to the NY field office after a while. That scenario IS a little Deus ex Machina, but that is the easiest way to keep the whole cast intact while still maintaining some dramatic conflict with Kate's new job duties. However, we already know that Lisa Edelstein is only cast for 3 episodes, so the DC partnership with her is obviously going to be short-lived. (It also could be that KB leaves the Feds and returns to NYC but does not go back to working at the 12th; she could be lured back by a different position with NYPD. Remember that IRL, NYPD has a very large anti-terrorism unit. Of course, if they took that path, the style of the plots would probably change; there wouldn't necessarily be a VOTW at the beginning of every ep. Personally, I think that might not be a bad thing; there are only so many odd ways to kill people.)

Honestly, one of the things that I most like that I've heard about the premiere is that Castle is FINALLY shown to have been dealing with a book tour. I've always thought that it was really odd that he never seemed to do them; authors of that sort of book are always contractually obligated to. I've hosted a fair number of such appearances myself. The writers tend to REALLY hate the tours, but they don't have much choice, and they are very grateful if you can make the experience as painless as possible.

For anyone who wants to see pre-Castle Stana Katic, The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice is on TNT at 4PM EST. It's a cute movie.

Just watched it. Boy were my guesses off. But the episode was fantastic!
